What to do
Beach activities on Lake Michigan: At Kohler-Andrae State Park, visitors can enjoy the sandy beaches along the lakeshore. "Gorgeous place to camp! everything was beautiful, this park has it all... spacious campsites, sand dunes, trails, beach, gorgeous sunsets!" notes Kendra G.
Explore historical sites: Take a short drive to nearby Sheboygan landmarks. "Make sure to venture into Sheybogan and check out the lighthouse," suggests Kathie M. after camping at Kohler-Andrae.
Hike the boardwalk trails: The dune boardwalk trail at Kohler-Andrae offers unique views of the lake. "Hiking is nice, there is a dune boardwalk trail that is good that runs parallel to Lake Michigan shoreline," explains Shanon P.
Disc golf and soccer ball course: The Broughton Sheboygan Marsh Park Campground offers recreational options beyond hiking. "They have an 18 hole disc golf course and a nine hole soccer ball course. Brand new play ground added," shares Jill G.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Long Lake Campground offers secluded camping spots. "Very nice campground. Sites are decent sized for tenting or small camper. Almost all the sites are surround by trees and small brush so it gives a private feel," says Brandon L.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms at many campgrounds. "The bathhouse very nice. Very nice nature center. Laundry facilities available," notes Kathie M. about Kohler-Andrae State Park.
Lake views and sunsets: The waterfront locations provide scenic vistas. "Sunrises so, so beautiful. This campground has everything! Trails, dunes, marshes, forests, and Lake Michigan," shares Kathie M.
Well-marked trail systems: Mauthe Lake Campground in Kettle Moraine connects to extensive trails. "There is a crushed gravel trail running from here to Long Lake that is great for running/walking/biking," explains Sarah L.
What you should know
Seasonal water availability: Water systems may not operate year-round. At High Cliff State Park Campground, "Only gripe is the uncertain schedule they have for turning on water for the season. First week or two of May is a safe bet, but no promises," warns Brandl B.
Beach conditions can change: Water levels affect beach access at some parks. At Harrington Beach, "the beach no longer exists as the lake has washed it away. Pet beach is just really slippery rock which is very dangerous," reports Phillip B.
Site-specific amenities: Research your specific site before booking. At Long Lake Campground, "Some sites completely adjoining or with very little separating them. This loop would be good for an option if the group sites are unavailable," advises Darren L.
Tree coverage varies: At some campgrounds, disease has affected shade. "They had to cut down most of the trees due to the emerald ash borrer. when the sun is out it gets HOT," warns Geoffrey B. about Harrington Beach.
Tips for camping with families
Beach proximity: Choose sites close to swimming areas for easier access with children. At Harrington Beach State Park Campground, "The lake was a short bike ride from our site, and we enjoyed walking the beach and attached trails," shares Amanda G.
Playground access: Several campgrounds have play areas for children. "There is a large open area and play area for kids to run around walkable from the camping, lots of little paths to explore!" notes Kendra G. about Kohler-Andrae.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Kids enjoy spotting local animals. "Plenty of frogs and turtles to be found," mentions Amanda G. about the pond at Harrington Beach.
Ice cream trips: Plan a special treat during your stay. "If you like ice cream, head to Dundee and visit the Hamburger Haus," suggests Sarah L. who camped at Mauthe Lake.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through site availability: Reserve early for easier access sites. "Site 112 is nice pull through," notes Nancy S. about High Cliff State Park.
Water hookup logistics: Be prepared with proper equipment. At Broughton Marsh Park, "One spigot for every four sites for water so 100 foot hose is required," advises Jill G.
Electric service types: Check what hookups are available before arrival. Many campgrounds near Sheboygan offer 30-amp service, but 50-amp may be limited.
Site selection for larger rigs: Research specific site dimensions. At Long Lake Campground, "We walked some of the other loops and the 700's loop being a bit more wooded with some nice sites being my favorites," recommends Darren L. for finding suitable spots.
