Campgrounds near Cleveland, Ohio range from developed RV parks with full hookups to primitive tent sites, with several locations within an hour's drive of the city. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located between Cleveland and Akron, offers limited camping opportunities with sites at Heritage Farms and previously at Stanford House, though some camping is no longer offered in the park. Punderson State Park Campground and West Branch State Park provide year-round camping with amenities for tent, RV, and cabin campers. Private campgrounds like Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA and American Wilderness Campground offer additional options with full hookups and facilities for families.

Seasonal considerations affect camping availability throughout the region, with many campgrounds operating from April through October. Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA operates from May to mid-October, while American Wilderness Campground is open from late April to mid-October. Several state parks remain open year-round, though services may be limited during winter months. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for weekend stays during summer months when campgrounds fill quickly. The region experiences humid summers and cold winters, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable camping conditions. A visitor noted, "Findley State Park was our family's getaway! Living in Northeast Ohio, you have the benefits of a big city, yet you are within a half hour of solitude and good trails."

Mixed-use campgrounds dominate the Cleveland area, with many facilities accommodating both tent and RV camping. Water features are common attractions, with several campgrounds situated near lakes or ponds for fishing and swimming. West Branch State Park Campground receives high ratings for its lake access and family-friendly amenities, though some campers mention it can be quite busy during peak season. Proximity to urban attractions represents a key advantage for many camping areas. A camper shared, "We chose this campground for its proximity to Cuyahoga NP. It's located somewhat close to an industrial area, so it's not really that quiet but is a good place to stay if you want to be near Cuyahoga or Cleveland." Developed campgrounds with full amenities are prevalent, though more rustic options exist for those seeking a more natural experience.

      Cherokee Park Camground

      Pretty area

This park is off the beaten path and filled mostly with Full Timers in beautiful landscaped sites. But room for overnighters like us. All sites have electric and water. The laundry is small, only 1 working washer, but it came in handy. The bathrooms have free showers but could use a deep cleaning. Big open field for the dog to play

      Woodside Lake Park

      Convenient and lots of choices

We stayed in the fall for one night to visit Cuyahoga Valley Park (about 25 minutes away, as is a Costco). Many choices for short term sites. From the many permanent RVs and water slides in the pond, looks like it could be less quiet other times of year and a fun place for kids (we weren’t traveling with any). Staff nice and helpful but showers were old and dirty, probably in part to the high iron in the water (we didn’t hook up water).

      West Branch State Park Campground

Great overnight close to Ohio Turnpike

We were passing through on a weeknight in mid September. Many open sites. Sites are paved and many are sloped. Most are shaded. Our site #41 was fairly level with electricity. Close to huge bathhouse with flush toilets, showers and laundry. High above the lake with views through the trees. Appeared there were many long term campers but just as good for our short overnight stay. Online registration. $45 for electric only site.

      Perry Township Park

      Hidden Gem

We’ve stayed here several times over the years and it’s always a pleasant experience. Lots of seasonal campers, but most are only in residence on the weekends. During the week we have the place to ourselves. Clean facilities, the standard picnic table and fire ring. Incredible sunsets, lake breeze and nothing but the crashing of the waves to lull you into a peaceful nights rest.

      Hidden Lake

      Hidden lake campsite

Its a beautiful campsite surrounded by trees with a lake right in the middle of the park. They do provide fire wood though its not always guaranteed. If you like waking up in front of a lake or always dreamt of doing it. This is the place to go. Oh, and a great fishing spot. The lake is always stocked

      Roundup Lake RV Resort

      Sites close together

We didn’t engage in the many things to do. We are using it as a base camp to go to a Guardians game, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On the weekend when it was pretty full, it was tight quarters and this you can hear lots of people. We kinda gave up having a quiet night and went inside the camper. Now it is not the weekend and very few people around. Seasonal are all together, transients grouped together. Did get Hershey’s ice cream at their arcade.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Beautiful peaceful campground

We paid $25 for the night and it was definitely worth it! Beautiful grassy area with spacious sites. There were clean porta potties, potable water, dump stations, and also a working restroom but we didn’t try it so not sure what that was like. Great cell service and data connection. Only ~15 minutes drive from Cuyahoga! Overall lovely campsite would 100% recommend!

      Punderson State Park Campground

      Quiet and Lush

Our site was level, although I observed many that are not. It was fairly quiet, although the sites are pretty small. Ours was described as 'waterfront', but it was so overgrown between the site and the shoreline that there was no access and the lake wasn't visible. Bathrooms were very clean and the shower worked great.

      Perry Township Park

      Great view of Lake Erie!

Gated and private campground. You can come and go as you please 24/7 with a gate card. Secure and clean bathrooms. Laundry room. Camp store and more. Wi-Fi is available. But the view on being right on lake Erie is the best. It's a must campground, at least once.

    Guide to Cleveland

Cleveland's camping options extend beyond developed sites to diverse alternatives, with several parks within 30-60 minutes of downtown. The region sits along Lake Erie's southern shore at about 650 feet elevation, creating microclimates that affect camping conditions. Most campgrounds operate April through October, though several state parks remain open year-round with reduced services during winter months.

    What to do

Hiking and nature trails: West Branch State Park offers multiple trail systems for different experience levels. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd," notes reviewer Alisa G., who also mentions that "we can launch our kayaks right from our campsite."

Water recreation: Heritage Farms provides access to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath. "Located about ½ mile off the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath, this campground is a part of a 5th generation working farm. Both standard campsites and shelters are available and are scattered among a working Christmas Tree farm," shares Shari G.

Fishing opportunities: American Wilderness Campground features multiple fishing areas. "We love the fishing available here we also had the kids they enjoyed the arcade and gem mining we also liked the access to self serve laundry and camp store as well," notes Jessica J.

    What campers like

Unique camping experiences: Heritage Farms offers non-traditional sites. "Our site was in the middle of the sites, but upon on a slight hill. Privacy wasn't fully there like many other sites. No tree coverage, so be cautious in summertime heat. That being said, there was a two-open-sided A frame," explains Brady R., who adds, "It's hard to not give it any lower than 5 stars when you literally camp within a Christmas tree farm."

Clean facilities: Findley State Park maintains its amenities well. "Shower houses are clean. Canoes and kayaks are available for renting. Many musicians set up camp and would jam out for some live evening music! Everyone was so nice at the campground," shares Kimberly C.

Budget-friendly options: Silver Springs Campground provides economical camping close to the national park. "Very nice, quiet city campground. Many unlevel sites. Only 3-30 amp hooks ups, the rest are 20 amp. No reservations. Fantastic dog park with a swimming beach for dogs only," reports Judy F.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds near Cleveland fill quickly during peak season. At West Branch State Park, "make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G.

Site conditions vary widely: West Branch State Park Campground has uneven terrain at many sites. "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," reports Andrea F.

Limited full-hookup options: Most campgrounds offer electric but fewer provide water and sewer. At Punderson State Park, "only a few sites were full hookup" according to Rebecca G., who also noted that "showerheads were too low for anyone over 5'7"."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-specific amenities: Punderson State Park Campground offers family-friendly features. "This is a good campground for families. We tent camped here. The sites are pretty far apart and you feel secluded but, at the same time, the bathrooms are close by. There is a lot of hiking and things to do around the area and even a playground for the kiddos," shares Jenny K.

Check for swimming options: Many campgrounds feature swim areas of varying quality. At American Wilderness Campground, "we loved the beach and the fun we have had this is our favorite place to camp," mentions Mallory N.

Consider site privacy: Findley State Park offers varying levels of seclusion. "I would recommend doing some research on campsites as they range from small to large for the same price. The original site I booked was a tent site too small for 2 tents however I was able to switch to another sight #118 which was larger," advises Crystal A.

    Tips from RVers

Prepare for leveling challenges: Willow Lake Park has site variations that require preparation. "Truck camping and caught them early in the season and after rains the sites were kind of wet. Cold showers free, $0.50 for 5 minutes of hot water. I chose the latter. Bath house was clean but dated. Owners are making improvements all the time," reports Wilson W.

Consider water quality: Several campgrounds have water issues. At Willow Lake Park, "the water, while I'm sure was fine, had an odor to it so I didn't partake," notes Wilson W.

Check hookup details: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA provides reliable hookups. "We were in the area for medical visits in Cleveland. This spot was convenient and a great location to do a little sightseeing. Sites were gravel and level. We enjoyed full hookups. Cable was better than most but WiFi could be a little weak," explains Sharon J.
