    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Erie, Pennsylvania range from lakefront sites with beach access to inland facilities with family-friendly amenities. Sara's Campground sits at the entrance to Presque Isle, offering both tent and RV camping with direct access to Lake Erie beaches. Several established campgrounds including Lampe Marina, Erie KOA, and Sparrow Pond Family Campground provide a mix of accommodation types within 20 miles of downtown Erie. Most facilities offer electric hookups, water access, and basic amenities like showers and restrooms, while some also feature cabin rentals for those seeking alternatives to traditional camping.

The camping season in northwestern Pennsylvania typically runs from April through October, with most campgrounds closing during winter months. "We stayed here because it was fairly close to Presque Isle and the price was very reasonable for the area," noted one camper about Sparrow Pond Family Campground. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and holidays when lakefront sites fill quickly. Many campgrounds in the region offer both seasonal and overnight sites, with seasonal campers occupying a significant portion of some facilities. Cell service varies by location and provider, with some campgrounds reporting weak or spotty coverage, particularly those farther from urban areas. Weather conditions can change rapidly near Lake Erie, with strong winds sometimes affecting beachfront camping.

Waterfront access represents a major draw for campers visiting the Erie region. Sites with views of Lake Erie receive consistently positive reviews, with campers highlighting sunset views and beach proximity as key attractions. A reviewer described Sara's Campground as having "a great location that cannot be beat for ease of access to the beaches." Family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, fishing ponds, and swimming areas are common at larger campgrounds in the area. Some facilities cater primarily to RV campers with full hookups, while others maintain a balance between tent and RV sites. Proximity to Presque Isle State Park, which does not permit overnight camping within its boundaries, makes nearby private campgrounds particularly popular during summer months. Several campgrounds also provide easy access to regional bike trails, with the paved trail around Presque Isle being especially popular among campers.

      Lampe Marina Campground

      Very nice campground great facilities

This is a nice campground. Well maintained, good shower and laundry facilities very clean. Lots of things to do and see nearby. There's Erie museum of maritime l , along with the tall ship Niagara , which was used in the war of 1812. Couple small lighthouses to tour. All sites have both 50 and 30 amp power, all sites have water, however, there is no sewer system or full hookups here. There is a easily accessible dump site. The RV park is located with a good Marina and boat launch. There's a lot of space between the campers. All the sites are level , and most of them are paved. They're wide enough to park most vehicles next to your camper, and in several cases, included people with good sized boats parked with their RV for easy launch and go . If you don't mind , their not having sewer hookup is at the site, This is one of the best campsites so far on our trip.

      Two Mile Run County Park

      Beautiful Forrested Camping

What a hidden gem this place is! Located deep in a county park in the forested rolling hills of PA. Every site is huge and mostly private. Combination of paved main roads and gravel dirt camp loops. Most of the sites look relatively flat. The whole park is spotless clean, no trash anywhere! Bathrooms and showers are clean and maintained regularly. There is no camp store! Stock up before arrival. Firewood and ice. Can be outside the park at a bait shop and local farm about 2 miles away. Or just stop in Oil City first. You can grab a site online .....site unseen and be happy on arrival. Definitely on my must return list. Happy camping!

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

      Awesome place to camp

Pymatuning Lake Campground is a huge 700 site family oriented campground. Sites are large and clean and your not packed in. Bathrooms and showers are OK but they are clean. Best part of being here is the awesome fishing. Know for huge black crappie, walleye, and small and big mouth bass. This is the place to go fishing.

      Chautauqua Gorge State Forest Campground

      Great Free spot

I would 100% stay here again. Hubby & i enjoyed it and was not busy at all. A family friendly place. I have a 16 ft long travel trailer and was great but i would not recommend anything bigger. There’s only 2 spots for travel trailers, camper van’s and the rest of the 6 spots are for tents. First come first serve. You can only stay here 3 nights max

Wolfkiel Run Shelters — Oil Creek State Park

Do not camp in oil Creek State Park you are in danger

I suggest not camping or hiking in oil Creek State Park because there is a wild and crazy guy carrying a badge in a gun out because everybody a bad time and hand out fines like they are welcome gifts. I will never camp again let alone at oil Creek State Park and it has been over 20 years that this officer has ruined everything for me just because he is a little weasel that does not respect or care about anybody he just wants to write tickets and fines when you are trying to have a recreational enjoyable time in the woods do not think that you are okay there are still crazy cops out there trying to ruin everybody's good time!

Virginia's Beach Lakefront Cabins and Camping

      Beautiful campground on Lake Erie

Several shaded, grassy RV campsites face the lake.  There are cabins to rent that are right near the lake.  It's a mix of short-term and long-term/permanent rentals.

A large grassy area for children to play on.  There is a small fishing pond near the office.  A rocky beach and boat dock w/launch ramp.  A fire ring for nighttime bonfires.  Owners are friendly and accommodating.

I've stayed there the past two years, am going back this year, and will be going back as long as I'm able to travel from California to Pennsylvania.  Sunsets over the lake rival those over the Pacific Ocean.  I love the place!

    Guide to Erie

Camping options near Erie, Pennsylvania include several lakefront and inland facilities within 30 minutes of the city. The region sits at approximately 730 feet above sea level with a continental climate featuring warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Camping season generally runs April through October, with temperatures ranging from highs of 75-82°F in summer to lows of 55-62°F at night.

    What to do

Beach activities at Presque Isle: Campers staying at Sara's Campground can access nearby beaches for swimming and water activities. "This campground has 2 sides. One near the bay and one right on the beach. The beach side is wonderful. Very nice people and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the waves at night and having my coffee watching the sun rise and the waves crashing onshore," reported one visitor at Sara's.

Fishing opportunities: Several campsites near Erie, Pennsylvania offer fishing access for various species including steelhead and trout. Follys End Campground provides direct stream access. "Sites aren't on top of each other. Best sites are along the river and store has lots of fishing supplies," noted one camper. The campground provides a natural setting for anglers of all skill levels.

Biking and trails: The area offers extensive biking options, particularly around Presque Isle. "The property is very well maintained and the bathrooms are IMMACULATE! Showers are coin op and they have a change machine. Also laundry available," reported a visitor to Sara's Campground, which provides access to regional biking trails. Many campers bring bikes to explore the peninsula's paved trails.

    What campers like

Lakefront camping views: Many campers value the sunset views over Lake Erie. At Virginia's Beach Campground, "Almost all the spots have a water view even if you're not super close you can still see a small portion of it. There is an entrance down a rocky driveway to get to the lakes sandy edge which is great to bring chairs down and watch the sunset."

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the Erie area generally maintain good sanitation standards. "The facilities are good and the campground is very nice and clean," noted a visitor to Sara's Campground. Similarly, at Lampe Marina Campground, visitors appreciate the "Clean bath house. Affordable rates. Host/management is great!"

Marina access: Boat owners appreciate facilities with water access. Lampe Marina Campground sits directly on Presque Isle Bay. "Very nice campgrounds on Presque Isle Bay. Quiet and well managed. Clean with laundry and full facilities," reported one visitor. The marina offers convenient access for boaters seeking to explore Lake Erie.

    What you should know

Site spacing varies widely: Some campgrounds offer spacious sites while others place campers in closer quarters. At Sara's Campground, "Sites are packed in," according to one reviewer. Another noted, "We arrived to our site after making a reservation over the phone and got out of dodge right away. Wasn't worth the sunk cost of the overnight fee, especially during a pandemic. We were surrounded by campers (many residential) all within six feet."

Cell service limitations: Mobile connectivity can be unreliable in the region. At West Haven RV Park, visitors report variable service. Wifi is typically limited to areas near campground offices, with one Follys End camper noting "Wifi was too weak at my tent site and Verizon service was mostly unavailable."

Seasonal residents: Many campgrounds in the area maintain a significant percentage of seasonal campers. "Most sites are seasonal, they do have a lot of overnight though. Sites are very tight to get into," reported a visitor about Sara's Campground. Family Affair Campground similarly has "too many permanent sites. Very little rental sites for travelers."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Erie KOA offers numerous family-oriented amenities. "Nice fishing pond. Easy to ride bikes around. Kids loved seeing the giant teepees. Pool is clean and centrally located. It's a bonus that they have food available to buy like burgers and hot dogs!" wrote one camper. The playground facilities receive positive reviews from families with younger children.

Educational opportunities: Campsites provide learning experiences about local ecosystems. One visitor to Erie KOA noted, "The kids enjoyed fishing in the KOA pond." Another family mentioned their children enjoyed "panning for gold" activities offered at the campground.

Safety considerations: Parents appreciate the enclosed nature of many campgrounds. "Fun little campground with friendly staff and wide open spaces. Clean bathrooms, great pool, fun little game room. The playground got 2 thumbs up from a 4 and 6 year old," reported a family staying at Erie KOA. Most family-oriented campgrounds enforce quiet hours starting between 9-11 PM.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds require additional equipment for leveling. At Sparrow Pond Family Campground, "The site was nice and in a great location with a view of the pond, but wasn't level." RVers recommend bringing leveling blocks regardless of campground.

Hookup limitations: Water access points are sometimes shared between sites. One camper at Virginia's Beach noted, "We had extremely low water pressure so we filled our tank and used our pump. Problem solved!" Larger RVs should confirm access details before arrival.

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds present challenges for larger rigs. At Virginia's Beach, "Entry road was filled with LOTS of holes & ruts which were filled with mud mud & more mud." Drivers of larger Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels should call ahead during wet weather periods to check current road conditions.
