American Wilderness Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing, swimming, and hiking keep campers occupied at American Wilderness Campground in Grafton, Ohio, where a lake anchors the recreational activity and a playground sits within easy walking distance of most sites. The campground runs from late April through mid-October, giving families a solid window across warmer months. Campers looking into places to camp near Grafton will find this property covers the full-hookup spectrum, with electric, water, and sewer connections available and an RV length limit of 95 feet.

The campground draws a heavy seasonal crowd, and that shapes the experience. A number of sites are occupied by long-term seasonal campers, particularly those closest to the lake, which means drive-in sites for overnight visitors tend to be set back from the water. As Kathy C. notes, "Drive in sites are set back and not near the lake." Site quality varies depending on placement: wooded sites with electric and water draw positive feedback for the tree cover behind them, while meadow sites in the primitive area offer little shade. The primitive area also relies on a port-a-potty rather than the full restroom facilities available elsewhere on the property.

Cleanliness comes up repeatedly in reviews, and the pattern is mixed. Staff clean the bathrooms and showers on a regular schedule, and multiple campers report finding them in good condition. Site cleanliness, however, has been inconsistent, with at least one reviewer finding a site left in rough shape by previous occupants. The store, lake access, and playground cluster together, making them easy to reach on foot from most areas of the campground. WiFi is available, and a dump station serves self-contained rigs.

Reservations are accepted and recommended. The cancellation policy is strict: the campground enforces a seven-day prior window with limited flexibility, which is worth reading carefully before booking. Rates run $35 to $69 per night depending on site type. Nearby alternatives include Sunset Lake Campground and Willow Lake Park Inc for campers weighing options in the region.

American Wilderness works best for families with kids who want structured amenities and lake access, and for RV travelers who need full hookups within reasonable range of Cleveland.

Money Grubbers

Made a reservation. Canceled since wife had to go into hospital due to an emergency. No flexibility in the 7-day prior window. State parks and others have all been decent to us over this. We paid 3 days for a reservation we never used but canceled 2 days out. The park did not fill up so they took our money over a gotcha clause even after I begged the manager for her understanding. Under the circumstances, I was hoping they would compromise and take only the first night, but they are in it mainly for your money, I'm afraid.

Not good

I was at first happy to find a campground along our route. They had some seasonal campers that had left, which opened up some spaces. Choice made because closest campground to Cleveland. Well the site was trashed. Garage all over, firpit overflowing with charcoal and beer bottles. Woods behind site full of beer bottles and garbage. People camping there were loud and not speed limit adherence. Lots of rules but people didn't enforce what so ever. Would not return or recommend.

Family friendly

I think this is probably a really nice family place. I, on the other hand, was looking for a place to pitch my tent en route to elsewhere. The meadow I was in was open, no shade. The firewood I bought was wet, so much so it simply smoldered & sweat.

Better than expected

Aug 2019, 3 nights. We were tent camping on a site w/electric & water. We had nice woods behind us, neighbors to the right and vacancy on the left (jackpot). A quick walk to the playground for the kids, lake and store weren’t much further then restrooms with showers were right there as well.

We weren’t expecting much and actually only booked it because of proximity. It’s only 20mins from our home, so we were really curious. Definitely would come back, but may opt for a primitive site as we liked the placement a little better than if we were surrounded on both sides.

Good

Mostly seasonal campers. Drive in sites are set back & not near the lake. They have back in & drive through sites. There is a small store. It is close to Cleveland & has Good Sam discount.

Not a terrible place

We stayed in the primitive area and it was just ok. Only a port o potty was available in that area but you could walk to a different area for restrooms and showers. I think if you paid for a seasonal site, your experience would be much better as you would be close to the amenities and have views of the nice lake.
