Camping near Vermilion, Ohio connects easily to major highways, making weekend trips convenient. Sandusky sits close by, giving campers quick access to Lake Erie's shoreline. Campgrounds near Vermilion range from wooded tent sites at inland state parks to developed sites with modern bathhouses along the lakeshore. Maumee Bay State Park Campground has well-kept sites and modern bathhouses with showers. The wooded campsites at Findley State Park Campground attract hikers who like the shade during summer months. Deer and raccoons commonly wander through these camping areas, so keep your food secured in containers or your vehicle. Book your site ahead of time if you're camping between May and September when spots fill quickly. These parks limit stays to 14 consecutive days, which works for most vacations. Following the posted rules keeps rangers happy and helps everyone have a better time camping.

      Valley Overlook

      Absolutely Wonderful

Absolutely a great spot for large private heavily wooded sites! Only primitive non electric site for roof top campers is C5! Others are park and walk or to small to open up and be comfy. Great cabins and yurts! Clean bathrooms and showers. Everything here is done online from reservation to buying wood and so Ice so prepare for that.

      Beautiful

Kelley’s island is absolutely beautiful. The site is clean and quiet and has lots of space. My only complaint is the water near us was not working at the primitive sites.

      Findley State Park Campground

      Love this place

I’ve been camping here ever since I was a kid and I still love it! It’s so peaceful and heavily wooded unlike those pavement campgrounds lol there are limited electric sites so just be sure to book in advance to get a nice spot if you need electric. It isn’t anywhere near a highway so it’s very quiet! They have plenty of hiking trails, disc golf, a playground for the kids, a nature center and gift shop, archery and so much more!

    Guide to Vermilion

Lake Erie's influence on Vermilion creates milder temperatures compared to inland areas, with daytime summer highs typically reaching 80-85°F. Camping options range from lakefront sites with beach access to wooded inland settings. Most campgrounds near Vermilion maintain graveled roads that drain well after rain, preventing muddy conditions common in other Ohio camping areas.

    What to do

Kayaking on Lake Erie: East Harbor State Park Campground provides easy water access for paddlers. "The campground is right on the shore of Lake Erie, there are a few restaurants nearby. The sites vary in size, lots of shade trees where we camped," reports Michi P. Many campers bring their own watercraft, but rentals are available at the park.

Island exploration: Kelleys Island State Park Campground serves as a base for exploring the island's unique features. "The island has space to launch kayaks a boat dock. Plenty of hiking bring your bike to see the whole thing via peddle power. There is a brewery and winery," notes Lauri J. The island's glacial grooves represent some of the best preserved examples in North America.

Hiking through woods: Findley State Park Campground offers extensive trail networks through mature forests. "We can easily get lost on 3 mile hikes in the woods and still be on marked paths! The roads are paved and excellent for biking and skating," shares Kimberly C. Trail maps are available at the park office, with routes ranging from 0.5 to 3 miles.

Beach swimming: East Harbor State Park Campground maintains a sandy beach area for swimming. "The benefit of C is that there is a very nice newer shower house by the pull through lots, the facility is hard to beat in a state park!" explains Mark S. Swimming areas typically have lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    What campers like

Large, private sites: Findley State Park Campground offers well-spaced camping areas. "We have enjoyed the shade at our site this week and the space between us and our neighbors," writes Kimberly C. Most sites include a fire ring, picnic table, and enough space for two tents or an RV with an awning setup.

Clean facilities: Sandusky-Bayshore KOA maintains high cleanliness standards. "The campground was in pretty good shape. It's location is amazing for getting around the area. We took trips to Vermillion, Put-in-Bay and Cedar Point," reports Simone N. Bathroom facilities receive daily cleaning, with additional service during busy weekends.

Water views: Kelleys Island State Park Campground provides lakefront camping with direct water access. "The state park has camping that can accommodate launching your boat if needed. They have showers, although they aren't always very clean," notes Erin H. Waterfront sites cost approximately $10-15 more per night than standard sites.

Family activities: American Wilderness Campground offers numerous amenities for families. "We loved the fishing available here we also had the kids they enjoyed the arcade and gem mining we also liked the access to self serve laundry and camp store as well," shares Jessica J. Activities often run on weekends, with schedules posted at the campground office.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular campsites near Vermilion, Ohio fill quickly during peak season. "Very nice, comfortable campground, kids loved it. Only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you're planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance," advises Jeffrey L. from Findley State Park.

Ferry logistics: Kelleys Island State Park Campground requires ferry transport. "You have to take a ferry to the camp ground. Kelley's Island Ferry in Marblehead. It is a few miles to camp ground so if you are renting and don't bring a vehicle you will want to rent a golf cart," explains Lauri J. Ferry costs approximately $100 round trip for a family with car.

Site selection research: Sites vary significantly in size and features. "I would recommend doing a some research on campsites as they range from small to large for the same price. The original site I booked was a tent site to small for 2 tents however I was able to switch to another sight which was larger," recommends Crystal A. from Findley State Park Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Wildlife education: Findley State Park offers nature programs for kids. "Wonderful state park with lots of trails and a lake. Took the kayaks out on the lake and had a great time," shares Linda R. Programs typically run on summer weekends with topics including local birds, reptiles, and forest ecology.
