Best Campgrounds in Montana

Great free campground! No electric or water, but a spring nearby for filtering water, established fire rings, and a very clean pit toilet. There’s ample space for spreading out and several shaded picnic tables. There’s a few groves of trees for shade and hammocks and while my group managed to find spots that stayed shaded all day, some of the sites are very sunny. The roads in were gravel but well maintained, didn’t even have to put my vehicle into 4WD. I had 1 bar of cell service in the campground that came and went but strong service at the top of hill before entering the campground and at the nearby fire look out. Stayed here 4 nights in late June and only had 1 overnight camp neighbor and a couple of day-use neighbors. You may even have some cow neighbors if you’re lucky. Very beautiful scenery, would stay again :)

My son and I were antelope hunting near here last September and found this campground. We were not able to stay because we had a dog that needed to stay in the camper which required full hookup. For that we went in to Buffalo South Dakota and stayed at the campground there. I knew I'd make it back someday and we were on our way home from the Black hills to Sidney Montana and I remembered this place as we were passing by. We came up here with high expectations and all of our expectations were Met. Quiet, beautiful sunset. Plenty of room firewood at every site. Good internet service phone service on Verizon and T-Mobile and AT&T. This place is a grand slam for anybody that wants a great place to stay for free. Thank you USDA for all the hard work.

Very washboarded road to get up, we did not search further than the sign stating the camping point along the road. Camped at the first pull-off we saw. Quite a bit of traffic along this road, but still get a decent amount of privacy and views of the valley / Mammoth Hot Springs. We got in late, but I believe there are some more sites further down the road. At the spot we stayed I would say about two people could camp there.

As always, PLEASE clean up after yourselves. I always find too much trash at campsites, like I did at this one. Also, I noticed a bunch of old bathroom wipes, please come prepared for proper waste disposal.

This was the first place we tried in this area for a free spot to camp on the way from Banff/Jasper to Wisconsin. It was decently busy with a few spots left when we arrived at 2:30pm on a Saturday. By the end of the night all the spots were filled with people squeezing their rigs in between “sites”. There are numbered picnic tables and fire rings, but also campers dispersed throughout. You can walk right down to the water and there were plenty of people boating and swimming. Vault toilets were clean, no other amenities. Sunset was beautiful! There were some large groups with multiple RVs together and 5+ cars- it looked like they had been there for a while. I didn’t have any trouble sleeping but my boyfriend said there were generators running all night and some fireworks around 11:30p. Overall felt safe, worked for what we needed, and was free!

Definitely great for a short stay, it is a simple campground with all of the necessities. They have two women’s showers and two men’s showers. I will say to double check your hook ups because I did not realize that I booked partial hookups! So for the price of $75 per night I do find it on the pricey side. They do have a dump station on site though. The kids loved the playground and tons of open grass space and swings throughout, and they also have a pond that you can even fish him on site at the back of the property. The campsites are quite close together, but all in all a great stay! I almost would say this one goes closer to the 4 star mark than 5 for me if that helps. Also some highway noise (we were at the very front though closest to it).
