A state of staggering variety, Montana is truly one of the nation’s best camping destinations. The eastern part of the state characterized by badlands and prairie, the west is where most of the fun is found. Camping in Montana means sleeping in some of the most sensational landscapes anywhere in the USA.

With no fewer than 50 state parks and two of the greatest national parks in America, Montana is an adventurer’s paradise. Many explorers look for camping in Montana’s Yellowstone National Park, a sliver of which lies along the state’s southwestern border. If a visit to Yellowstone is on your itinerary, make sure to enter the park via the scenic Beartooth Highway.

Another great camping destination in Montana is gorgeous Flathead Lake, located within the Kootenai Tribes Flathead Reservation and the contiguous USA’s largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.     Glacier Campground

    Perfect for Glacier

    This was a cozy campground with AMAZING staff. Spots are a bit small wouldn’t recommend larger than a 30ft trailer. Water and electric (30amp only). Because wall the spots are nestled in the trees you definitely feel like you’ve got you’re personal space. Nice clean showers and laundry. They even have a cute cafe that is open for breakfast and dinner. A hidden gem! Less than a mile from West Glacier entrance. Currently reservations are only by phone but the owner said they were going to online soon. Would stay here anytime we visited Glacier.

    Sula Country Store and Resort

    Nicest, cleanest, friendliest

    I was camping at a nearby national park site that had a flyer for Camp Sula, saying that if you show the receipt from your stay you can use Camp Sulas shower, laundry facilities and wifi at no cost. I arrived there and the ladies working in the combination store/restaurant/gas and coffee station were so friendly and down to earth. I was given a towel and shampoo/conditioner for the shower, they had complimentary and coin washing machines, and coin dryers, all very efficient. After my shower and waiting for clothes to dry, I walked around the camp, the log cabins are adorable and cozy, each has its own porch, picnic table and adjacent fire pit. There is free put-put golf, horseshoes, tetherball and a small well stocked fishing pond with benches to watch the action or simply admire the beauty of the surroundings. It is close to the main highway but tucked back enough you feel "away" from the bustle. I enjoyed myself so much I inquired about camping there for the night & I would only need a parking space because I sleep in my truck bed canopy. They were full (accommodates RVs and tents) but offered a makeshift spot right by the creek. It was perfect. Because of COVID, they had limited reservations for dinner, and practiced social distancing and requested patrons wear masks. Not everyone participated with their request but were equally treated with kindness and respect. I highly recommend their breakfast, big fluffy pancakes and local meats. They kept the restaurant, showers & bathroom & store very very clean. The location is a landmark, the Lewis and Clark expedition camped there on their way to discover the west. I highly recommend them

    Tiny Town Campground

    Not for those who want sleep

    We arrived to this quaint little place after a long fun filled day in Yellowstone National Park.  If you are looking for peace and quiet look elsewhere.   If you have young children that go to bed before midnight look elsewhere.  If you are looking for air-conditioning  do not rent the tents because there isn't any.  While the place has some cute rustic charm they are located behind a bar and the music goes until 10pm on Sundays  and midnight on Friday and Saturday.  They have live bands which are so loud that you can feel the music and cannot hear anything else. They do provide ear plugs but they do not help.  I enjoying  writing  and was unable to do so because i could not  concentrate, even my noise canceling Boze headphones did not provide any relief.  They also need to update security because we had people coming onto the property without using the provided code.

    Most beautiful location of the KOAs I've stayed at. Nestled against the mountains and less than 3 miles to Glacier National Park. 

    Lots of sites to choose from. Ours was a pull thru with nice vegetation between. Fire pit with benches and picnic table. Some sites are close together with no privacy. Some have gas grills and patio furniture. There are cabins and tent sites as well. Bathhouse was average. The cafe was open for breakfast and dinner.Ice cream shop closed for the season. Amazing pool! Nice play area, dog parks. Really nice camp store, firewood available. KOA Workshop on site. RV wash and dog grooming by appointment.

    Nice large tent sites. They also have a geodesic dome you can rent. Website was not set up yet.

    Crystal Lake Campground

    Beautiful

    I love this place so much. This was my first time camping in Montana. It was breathtaking for me. The lake was so peaceful and clear. The trail around the lake is a nice walk to see all the different views around it. The meadows were full of wildflowers in the summer. The campground is a small loop and spaced out, the lake trail also had a couple of backcountry spots to set up. There’s also a few more trails in the area that were very pretty!!

    Crowded but not bad

    Nice campground, not surprisingly very crowded. Typical KOA, the sites are right on top of each other. Teenagers rudely cutting through your site. The next sites fire pit was 2 feet from my vehicle, I left that window closed so the smoke would not come in. One lane road with vehicles speeding both ways and inexperienced travelers backing ....trying to back into small sites. It was hectic, loud and crowded, though not horrible. There was shade on my “lane”, an adequate trail to walk, though watch out for bikers. A very nice dog park. Two food vendors, one ice cream, (cash) and a “grill” with outdoor seating and grill master. Two pools. One for families and the other adult only (yeah!) with hot tube. New shower house and laundry room. Close to Glacier and other tourist attractions. Reserve WAY ahead!

    Miles City KOA

    A very nice taken care of campground!

    This place is very relaxing a great little heated pool, playground and dog park (our dog loves being off leash!) super clean bathrooms and a great communal pavilion with grills to use. Swings and sitting areas all around and a river close by that my kids and dog loved walking by/in. All in all a great, peaceful stay.

    Yellowstone Dreamin Camp

    Glamping with a View

    We were in need of a place to stay while attending a field seminar in Yellowstone.  It is about a 30 min drive to Gardiner/Entrance to Yellowstone.  The owners have experience in the hospitality industry and it shows inside the tent.  We stayed in the Elk because we wanted a private bathroom. The room had 2 beds (super comfortable and well dressed), refrigerator, couch,  writing table and electric fireplace (more for ambiance vs really providing a lot of heat) and still very roomy. They provide a little lantern for night walks to bathroom or back to tent if you don't have your own flash light.   The deck off the front was ideal for sitting or practicing yoga.  You do have to walk to the bathroom/showers.  While we didn't have the opportunity to use the 2 community fire pits or horseshoes, butthey were well placed with a beautiful backdrop of mountains.  There is also a small building with a coffee/tea machine and another small refrigerator.  You can park right next to the tent.  

    If you want to take a walk, there are some dirt roads to walk by other surrounding farms.  

    The tents a pretty dispersed and seemed fairly private.  There was only one other couple on the premises so not sure when it is a full house.  They offer really nice kennels.  

    My only ding is they have a few kinks to work out, but I feel they will figure it out.  They will be offering speciality breakfasts in the future, but now they are just store bought muffins with yogurt and orange juice.  The location gets you off the highway, but you do need to navigate a gravel road for about a mile.  Totally drivable for any car. 

    I think if I stayed here again I would take one of their guiding trips.
