    Buffalo Gap Campground (ND)

    Convenient to the highway

General: Small (37-site) forest service campground in two loops near Theodore Roosevelt National Park. No hookups or cell service (despite proximity to the highway). We arrived on a Thursday afternoon in late August with no reservation and had no problem securing a site, although it filled almost to capacity by evening.

Site Quality: Many are in direct sun, but we found one that had some afternoon shade. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. All camper pads are paved.

Bath/Shower house: There were six vault toilets (two by the entrance and two in each loop) that had sinks but no soap; they were reasonably clean. Two showers were in the other loop from where we stayed, and we did not use them.

Activities: There is access to the Buffalo Gap Trail, but we did not hike it as this was an overnight stop for us and quite hot. It is not far from the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

It was hot when we were there (high 80s) so we just kind of collapsed upon arrival and took off the next day. The good news is you are close to the highway, but you will hear some road noise. $20 or$10 with the senior pass makes it a good deal. Cash or check if you cannot register online (no service with Verizon).

    Camels Hump Lake

Good pond spot on a hot day

Interesting pond spot. There are three roads from Camel Hump Rd that go into lake area loops. Chose the second right turn 1st, so you can scope out the areas down the first and third roads from across the pond, because those are tight and if someone is already there then theres no use driving down. Theres about two private spots down the 1st and 3rd right turns. The second turn though has tables and is more open and recreational for swimming and fishing. The best spot at 2nd right turn (middle of pond) is first loop on left with table and pit. It has a clear swim spot. Its a bit deep there but nice. No toilet or water but nice area to chill on a hot day.

    Elkhorn Campground

    Isolated and secluded campsite

Traveled about 35 miles on unpaved road in RAV4 AWD. Campsite was empty, so we had different sites to choose from. We were in a spot with some shade for our tent. Close to clean pit toilet. Hand pump was hard to pump which produced light brown water which wasn't something we wanted to drink, so bring in your own water. Site had large picnic table and fire ring. Nice view of landscape and Trailhead nearby. Nearby is Elkhorn Ranch Unit trail leading to Theodore Roosevelt Ranch site. No buildings but interpretive signage.

    Makoshika State Park Campground

    Unique

Small campground with vault toilets, and drinking water. a mile away from the campground are standalone sites you can drive into and park one vehicle you’re champion if you get site #22.

    Super private, great area!

This was an excellent spot for jeeps/off road vehicles. Very private, lots of fun if you have dirt bikes or four wheelers with you to explore. It’s just off the road so we heard cars going by every once in awhile, but for the most part had the area to ourselves. Only bugs were grasshoppers. Pit toilet was clean and unlocked. There was a map of the entire park as well. Probably one of my favorite spots

    Good, nice sites

Overall a nice campsite. Many sites for tents, some for campers and trailers. Each had a picnic table and a fire ring. Pretty loud road noise from the highway but a good spot to stop for a night.

Easy overnight stop in Eastern MT

Easy overnight stop when traveling MT-200.  The owner was very accommodating and welcoming.  We pulled in after 9:30PM and the owner met us to show us our site and get us checked in.  Sites were level, easy to pull through and setup quickly, however were close together.  Onsite laundry was convenient.

    Awesome Place

Amazing views all around, definitely worth the stop. Scenic drives & hikes. Absolutely loved this area.

Dry camping with potable water. You might get some generator noise, but during our 3 night stay only 1 camper violated the 8pm-8am quiet rule.

Groceries & gas a couple miles away. Like others noted, the road coming in is real rough, take it slow.

    Conveniently located off Route 200

Owner/Manager is welcoming and follows thru with calls and texts.
Obvious the campground area is being upgraded.
Level Gravel pads. WiFi. There is one Shower and one restroom and we found them clean. New electrical service, 20/30/50 and water. Hot, free shower Sites are close together.

    Gravel parking lot

Stayed on a Friday night.  A few big toy hauler RV's were there and ran their generators late into the night.  Some groups were ripping around on their OHV's late into the night (past midnight) which was less than desirable.  Pretty area, but know what you might be in for.

Paleontology Abound at Makosika State Park in

This is on of the coolest state parks this side of the Cenozoic Period! They found dinosaur fossils in this park. and you never know you just might find some too! Our campsites butted right up to a cool mountain and the peaks are small enough for you to scamper around on. PLUS the have the coolest frisbee golf course this side of the jurassic Period with embedded holes spread over the ancient cretaceous landscape! How cool is that.

Astronomy wise this is a Bortle Class 4 site SQM: 21.62 mag./arc sec2. I did not get to observe due to smoke and poor weather.

All sites are primitive but there is fresh water in each of the two campgrounds and vault toilets are nearby. Trash pickup id also available. There is no dump-station but one is close by at: Glendive Landfill City government office 801 E Brennan St. (406) 377-9839

Hiking at the park contains easy and tough trails but each one is sure to delight with wonder and discovery on each one.

    Hot showers baby!

We’ve been dispersed camping a majority of our travels but my bride saw that they had free Showers there so we made a change of plans.

The campsite is right off of the highways and easy to find. (Do not recommend buffalo gap rd south of the 94 in wet seasons unless you enjoy putting your white knuckling 4 low to use)

The sites are all asphalt and offer a decent amount of privacy!

Showers were great as well as the flushing toilettes.

Really close to Medora and TRNP

    Camp host was incredibly nice/friendly.

Would stay again if ever back up that way.

    Phenomenal night

Brother and I crashed here late so we drove in in the dark. We were delighted in the morning to find a beautiful park and a super lucky campsite with a bathroom and some trees for hammocking and two tent pads! Would love to stay here again. The out of state fee is $28/night

    A stop, not a campsite

It’s a really pretty area! Very quiet. Great if you’re offroading. Pit toilet. No water, no other amenities. Only 7-8 miles from Glendive and 94! Weird little bugs that pack a bite for their size. And some flies.

    This really isn't a campground

This is a spot that provides fishing access not really a campground. I believe you could stay here but there are no real designated spots, it is right next to the road, no trees, nothing really to do. I'm sure if you needed a spot to stop for the night, it would do but that's about it.

    RV park in Circle, Montana

Quiet RV park. The new owner is doing a lot of work leveling sites and putting in new infrastructure. Has full hook ups, a laundromat, and a shower. Close to a nice convenient store and restaurants. Small creek had geese, a heron, and carp.

    Recommend , would visit again.

Roads are paved, some better than others, sites a mix of blacktop and gravel. Water hydrant and vault toilets. Badlands geography and fossils are the main draw. Wasn’t crowded in September and most folks were quiet.

    Great campground

We stayed here for two nights on our motorcycle trip. The place is paved all the way through, including a pull in spot at each site.

Really nice bathrooms with nice free showers.

There were a lot of spots to choose from. If you pick a spot higher on the hills you can get cell reception at your site.

    Great views, ok campground

Be careful on the road from the visitor center to the campground - very rough. Otherwise, this is a decent campground with fabulous views of the surrounding badlands. No electric sites or dump station, but there is potable water available at the campground. It’s very close to the interstate, so it makes a great stopover.
