Many explorers look for camping in Montana’s Yellowstone National Park, a sliver of which lies along the state’s southwestern border. Few people know this, but Montana is a superb access point to the world’s very first national park. If a visit to Yellowstone is on your itinerary, make sure to enter the park via the scenic Beartooth Highway.


Another great camping destination in Montana is gorgeous Flathead Lake, located within the Kootenai Tribes Flathead Reservation and the contiguous USA’s largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Holter Lake Campground is situated on the picturesque Holter Lake in west central Montana. The site is located approximately 45 north of Helena, Montana along the Missouri River. The area offers stunning views of Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area. Gates of the Mountain is in close proximity of the campground which is accessible via a watercraft. The area is overflowing with outdoor adventure opportunities. Whether you're into fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, hiking, boating, water skiing or all of the above; all of these activities are in close proximity to Holter Lake Campground. There is surely an activity for everyone! Recreation Holter Lake Campground offers excellent recreational opportunities. Activities in the area include: camping, boating (motorized and non-motorized), fishing water skiing, hiking, scenic/wildlife photography, wildlife viewing, and bird watching. Holter Lake Campground has a small beach area, picnic areas, and a ramada/pavilion with power and lights. (The ramada use is first-come, first-served). There are vault toilets located in convenient locations throughout the area. There are trails within the general vicinity, as well as multiple fishing access sites and hunting access points. The recreation opportunities in the area are truly boundless. Facilities Holter Lake Campground offers several amenities that will make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. Holter Lake Campground is a 52-site campground that has spacious and level gravel parking pads that accomodates RVs, camper trailers and tents. 42 sites will take RVs and all sites accomodate tents. There are 9 tent only sites. 49 of the campsites have the capability of accomodating up to 2 RVs or tents per site. Each RV or tent is considered a camping unit and must pay accordingly. Holter Lake Campground is open year-round. However, fees are only collected from May 1st to Columbus Day. There are 7-day camping stay limits at Holter Lake Campground. Of the 52 sites, 33 sites are reservation only within Loop A. The remaining sites are first-come, first-served and the tent only sites (44-52) are within the first-come, first-serve regulation. Holter lake Campground features a large concrete boat launch with a courtesy dock as well as day-use and overnight dock slips for those camping in the campground. The docks are first-come, first-served with no assigned slips. A fish cleaning station is available near the entrance/booth at Holter Lake Campground. There is potable water provided throughout the campground and day-use areas, as well as garbage dumpsters. There are no hook-ups available. The reservation loop and tent area sites contain a fire ring with a grill grate in addition to a picnic table. There are also picnic tables and benches along the lake to take in the views. Natural Features Every campsite has a view of the lake and mountains. The campground and day-use area has poplar and green ash trees throughout the campground which provide shade during the height of the summer. The site is situated in a shrub-steppe landscape, mostly comprised of sage brush and bunch grasses. The campground is surrounded by sparsely wooded hills. Nearby Attractions Holter Lake Campground is located in a prime location to get out and recreate outdoors. There is access to public lands where multiple recreation opportunities and experiences are available. The campground is adjacent to the Missouri River, which was also the historical travel corridor for The Lewis and Clark Trail. Holter Lake Campground is situated between Helena and Great Falls. In Helena, there are great restaurants, museums, the capitol building, old mining settlements, Last Chance Gulch, Reeder's Alley and a vibrant downtown area. In or near Great Falls, there is the First People's Buffalo Jump and Interpretive Center, Charlie Russell museum, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Giant Springs Fish Hatchery and State Park, Tower Rock State Park and the Continental Divide Trail is nearby.

The Log Gulch Recreation Site provides visitors with 70 campsites with a 7 day stay limit. All but two of the campsites can accommodate RV or tent camping (or a combination of both); two campsites are tent-only sites. While tent camping is available at all campsites, only a limited number have grassy or optimally flat tent camping surfaces. Campsites are primitive, without hookups, but each campsite does have a fire pit and picnic table. Potable water is accessible at various locations throughout the area. Note, quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (no generators during this time). Do not camp outside numbered sites. Camp hosts or staff members are typically available onsite 7 days a week, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This site has a loading dock with a boat ramp on each side. Two docks with boat slips are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Boat slips are included in the camping/day use fee. A fish cleaning station is also available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The recreation site also has a beach with an enclosed swimming area, available Memorial Day through Labor Day (no lifeguard on duty). Restrooms are available throughout the site, and the restroom closest to the beach has a changing room. Two ramada shelters are also available for public use. The upper ramada is available if group reservations are not in effect. The lower ramada is available on a first-come, first served basis. Call the Butte Field Office for reservation details. Hiking trails are accessible from the park.

## Overview

Indian Flats Cabin is nestled in a hollow of old-growth trees in the shadow of Hogback Mountain, offering a remote lodging experience in the Big Belt Mountains in west-central Montana.  
  
The present Indian Flats Guard Station started its days as the Conway Station on Rock Creek in the Jim Ball Basin. The cabin was constructed in 1944 and replaced the original Conway Station. Rangers used this cabin when fulfilling duties in the area. In 1969, the cabin was relocated to its present location below Indian Flats.  
  
During the summer and fall months, the cabin is typically accessible by car. During the winter months, poor road conditions and heavy amounts of snow can be present. Access to the cabin during snow conditions is via an 8-mile stretch of road passable by snowmobiling, snowshoeing or skiing. Guests should be prepared to pack in many of their own supplies.

## Recreation

Plenty of opportunities are available for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing near Indian Flats Cabin.  
  
A hike through nearby Refrigerator Canyon passes through a 10-foot wide, 200-foot high canyon that was carved through limestone rock by a small mountain stream. The canyon is appropriately named, as breezes blowing over the stream and through the canyon's rock walls cause evaporative cooling, creating temperatures 20 degrees cooler than surrounding areas.  
  
An active fire lookout sits at the top of Hogback Mountain near the cabin. The Lookout is accessible by passenger vehicle and is manned by Forest Service personnel from mid-June through September. A short walk from the lookout offers spectacular panoramic views into Beaver Creek Canyon and surrounding landscapes.

## Facilities

The single-room cabin is furnished with 2 sets of bunk beds with mattresses and accommodates up to 4 people. A wood stove provides heat for the cabin and a propane stove is available for cooking. The kitchen is equipped with a table and chairs, propane lantern, cleaning supplies, dishes, utensils and cookware.  
  
An axe and snow shovel are provided. Firewood may be available, but it is not guaranteed. An outhouse with vault toilet is located nearby.  
  
There is no electricity or water at this facility. Guests must bring a sufficient amount of water for drinking, cooking and washing, as well as 1 or 2 small propane cylinders to use for the lantern or stove.  
  
Guests need to bring their own sleeping bags, flashlights, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags. All trash and food must be packed out, and guests are expected to clean the cabin before leaving.   
  
No firewood provided from June 1st - August 31

## Natural Features

Indian Flats Cabin is backed by mixed conifer forest, and a small stream flows in front of it. Hogback Mountain is located within a mile of the cabin at an elevation of 7,813 feet.  
  
The area around the cabin offers a variety of landscapes, from river banks to subalpine terrain. Valley bottoms, dense forests, meadows and barren ridges are mixed with streams, rivers and lakes.  
  
Wildlife in the area abounds. Elk, deer, squirrels and a variety of birds are commonly seen. The more elusive badger, wolverine, mountain lion and lynx find habitat in nearby areas as well.

The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness and the Missouri River are a short drive from the cabin, offering chances to explore.
