This is a free Montana Fishing Access Site next to the Yellowstone River north of Big Timber. There was one clean single vault toilet for about 5 sites. No water or garbage available but each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There is a boat launch for fishing. It snowed when we were there in very late September 2019. We were the only ones there the two days we waited out the snow. This is a campground where there are few public campgrounds.
I added another star as this is a quiet campground in an area with few public ones available. And, it was free.
This BLM recreation area on the Yellowstone River was a port in a storm. Yellowstone was crowded, as usual, and we needed a place to stay for the night. We were trying to outrun an impending snow dump so headed north toward Livingston. We stayed here September 9, 2019 for free.
First, stars docked for road noise; the campground is split by Hwy 191. Otherwise, well maintained clean basic campground with good tables, fire pits, drives and pads. Vault toilets, well water spigots throughout, no electric. Accommodates most rigs, probably best for small to medium trailers, RVS, and of course all tents.
Great for traveling through or base-camping a couple days to recreate in Gallatin Canyon. Recommend nearby Lava Lake Trailhead for a short but moderately challenging hike (elevation gain) to an alpine lake. There are many trailheads in the area accessible by car. Near Bozeman, and Big Sky Resort with multiple guiding services for fishing, rafting, horseback riding. No real cell service. Reservable through recreation.gov.
I’ll try to be fair after a 30 min payment dispute with the “I’m only part-time” check in attendant! All I can say is keep all your receipts! The first night we were in a space where all the traffic went right by us including a diesel truck reving his engines close to midnight. We asked to move and were accommodated….that’s where they messed up the charges. The second site was much better. Sites are gravel, well kept, and fairly level. Outside Attendant loaned us a tool and was very helpful. Close to the river and, while we didn’t fish, others did and said they were catching. Good location for Yellowstone. Nice playground for kids and laundry room available.
Really nice, we didn’t get a riverside spot but it was still nice enough. Beautiful views and close to Yellowstone, which was a plus for us. We felt lucky to get a spot on a Saturday! Fees vary but are $18 at the highest. A bit of highway noise and a decent amount of traffic from day use parking.
Very clean and quiet. Great access to the river. Great river access 1/4 mile up the road also. They sell firewood and ice are the ranger station.
Small but nice campsite. All the sites in the area were full when we arrived to Livingston (Sunday of labor day weekend). When we got to the site it seemed like it was full - took a closer look and no one took the tags off of the site post before leaving. We were the only tent in the site - quiet grounds. Bathrooms were actually surprisingly clean. Great location - $18 - steps away from the Yellowstone River - awesome view. Would totally recommend.
