With no fewer than 50 state parks and two of the greatest national parks in America, Montana is an adventurer’s paradise. The brightest star in Montana’s firmament is Glacier National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is blessed with magnificent mountainscapes. If you’re looking to go camping in Montana, Glacier should be at the top of your list.


Many explorers look for camping in Montana’s Yellowstone National Park, a sliver of which lies along the state’s southwestern border. Few people know this, but Montana is a superb access point to the world’s very first national park. If a visit to Yellowstone is on your itinerary, make sure to enter the park via the scenic Beartooth Highway.


Another great camping destination in Montana is gorgeous Flathead Lake, located within the Kootenai Tribes Flathead Reservation and the contiguous USA’s largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Numerous recreation areas surround Flathead Lake, offering excellent picnicking, fishing and camping. More adventure-minded travelers might want to attempt an ascent of Granite Peak, the highest mountain in the state.

Pipestone RV Park & Campground

Pigeon Creek Campground is located on the eastside of the Highland Mountain Range, approximately 20 miles east of Butte, MT. The campground has 6 units that will accomodate tents only. The road leading to the campground is narrow with sharp turns making it hard to pull a trailer to the site.

This 30,000-acre travel management area is located approximately 15 miles east of Butte and just north of I-90. It is a popular area for motorcycle and ATV riding enthusiasts. Mountain bikers also use the trails. There are about 75 miles of developed riding trails.

Pipestone OHV Recreation Area

Toll Mountain campground is located on the eastside of the Highland Mountain Range, approximately 20 miles east of Butte. The campground has 5 units that will accommodate trailers up to 22 feet and also has a group picnic area. The campground is close to a creek and offers a quiet forest setting for weekend getaways.

## Overview

Hells Canyon Guard Station is a quaint log cabin located in the Highland Mountains of Montana's Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. It is most often used as a base camp by hunters and hikers. The area is replete with wildlife and provides access to scenic mountain views, as well as plentiful opportunities for recreation.  
  
It was originally built in 1906 and used as a line cabin for ranchers before being donated to the Forest Service in 1910. The Forest Service has used the cabin as a guard station and now offers it for public enjoyment.  
  
The cabin can be accessed by vehicle; however, during winter months, alternative resources may be required to reach the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

## Recreation

Hunters frequently use the cabin as a base camp. Fishing is also available in nearby Hells Canyon Creek.  
  
Hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding are popular activities enjoyed by visitors to the Hells Canyon area. Off-road vehicles are allowed on designated trails. Off-road vehicles and motorcycles are also allowed in the area, but must be properly permitted and licensed to be on trails and roads.  
  
During winter months, the area is popular for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Winter sports enthusiasts should carry and know how to use proper backcountry equipment, including a beacon, shovel and probe.

## Facilities

The large, single-room structure has bunk beds to sleep up to 4 people. It has drinking water, a propane cook top, a wood stove for heat and cooking, and a table and chairs. Basic cooking and eating utensils, pots and pans, as well as some cleaning equipment should be available inside. An outhouse with a vault toilet is nearby.   
  
Electricity is not available at this cabin. There is a propane lantern you can use but propane is not provided. The propane is provided for the cook top that is located on the porch of the cabin. Guests will need to bring their own bedding, including blankets and pillows, towels, soap, matches, garbage bags, food and propane fuel (for lantern) in 16-ounce canisters. Guests are required to pack out all trash and clean the cabin prior to leaving. Cell phone service is rare or nonexistent in the area. 

Please remember that Hells Canyon Guard Station is considered a recreational area and shooting is not permitted around the cabin.

## Natural Features

The cabin is in an idyllic setting, with pristine nature all around. It is situated along Hells Canyon Creek in a lush meadow of sagebrush and tall grasses.  
  
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is famous for its wide array of big game animals. Elk and deer are the most sought after by hunters on the forest and in the Hells Canyon area. Upland game birds are also in the area.

Delmoe Lake Campground and Picnic area is located 15 miles from Whitehall and Butte in the Whitetail-Pipestone area - a popular destination for OHV riding. The lake is a man-made reservoir controlled by the Pipestone Water Users for irrigation near Whitehall. The campground has 25 sites for trailer and tent camping. Maximum trailer length is 32 feet. Wood is generally able to be found within the campground area. Water and restrooms are available. The picnic area has tables and a boat launch primarily for fishing activities. The lake level will fluctuate during the summer season as the water is used for irrigation.

Delmoe Lake

Cardwell General Store and Campground, located off I-90 at exit 256, is locally owned and operated in beautiful Cardwell, Montana. Centrally located between Butte and Bozeman in the Jefferson Valley of Montana, it is nestled in the tiny ranching community of Cardwell.  Laundry, restroom, shower and wifi are some of the amenities offered for our guests.

The RV Park is located directly behind the general store, which offers a wide variety of goods and services to locals and travelers alike. Fishing supplies, tackle, & bait are available for purchase, as well as firewood.  The gas pumps are open 24/7 for credit card users, and an ATM is on site. Inside the General Store is an Espresso bar with fantastic coffee drinks! a candy store and a ice cream shop with the best shakes ever including Huckleberry!

The Cardwell General Store and Campground is open year round and harbors thirty-eight pull-through RV sites, up to 60' max, and six dry tent sites.  We also have one fully furnished dry cabin. It comes with a queen sized bed with included bedding, table and chairs, mini fridge and Microwave.  Heat and Air Conditioning also in this cabin!  The cabin is super nice and fairly close to the shower house and you will enjoy it!

The facility includes a covered pavilion,  and horseshoe pits for summer evening barbecues with family and friends.  For campground guests the North Boulder River and Jefferson River are easily accessible nearby. Plenty of log furniture, swing sets and lovers swings to rest and visit!

Laundromat, restroom, and shower services are available to guests. There is a designated pet walk area for campers or travelers with pets.  All pets must be leashed at all times. No exceptions.  WIFI is available to our guests.  A laundry facility is available free of charge to guests.
