Hoosier Pass Dispersed Camping sites provide free, pet-friendly camping options with established fire rings along Forest Road 830, approximately 11,000 feet in elevation between Fairplay and Breckenridge. These dispersed sites accommodate both tent and RV camping with dogs, though the road requires high clearance vehicles beyond the first three accessible spots. Several campers note that despite being close to Highway 9, the wooded setting helps minimize traffic noise while offering convenient access to numerous hiking trails. Dogs must remain leashed in this area due to moderate hiker traffic and wildlife concerns.

Several pet-friendly established campgrounds near Alma offer more amenities than the dispersed options. Horseshoe Campground features sites adjacent to Williams Fork River, providing a peaceful water source for dogs needing cooling off after hikes. The campground includes vault toilets and trash service for $12 per night, though no bear lockers are available for pet food storage. Many sites at Horseshoe are notably sloped, creating challenges for level tent placement. For RV campers with pets, Middlefork RV Resort in Fairplay accepts dogs year-round with full hookup sites including water, electric, and sewer connections. Dogs need to be exercised outside campsite boundaries as the area experiences heavy ATV use on nearby forest roads, creating potential noise disturbances that some pets may find stressful.

      Cascade (colorado)

      One of our favorites

This is probably my family's favorite area to camp in Colorado. Off the beaten path enough that traffic is minimal. But nice and close to some great four wheel and off roading areas.

      Road 240 - Dispersed

      A hidden paradise

This spot is one of the best kept secrets for dispersed camping in Colorado. The road has plenty of camping spots all the way up to the lake. Most spots are wooded and offer plenty of shade. We were lucky enough to end up right along the river. If you keep driving down the road, you will end up at a stunning alpine lake basin that offers plenty of hiking. High clearance vehicle is necessary to get down this road.

      Forest Road 272 Dispersed Camping

Fire Ban Restrictions - Stage 1. No open fires allowed.

As of April 2026, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect for all National Forest System lands, including dispersed campsites in Pike-San Isabel National Forests (Browns Creek area). That means NO open campfires are allowed in dispersed sites, even in existing rock rings. Please check all fire ban restrictions in areas where you might be camping in Colorado due to the state’s significant drought. Nationally, 85-90% of wildfires are caused by human activity. “If you light it, be prepared to fight it”.

      Denver West-Central City KOA

      Beautiful view

Gorgeous views, relaxing and very kind, courteous staff. Dog park, hot tubs, laundry, all you can eat pancakes (very reasonably priced) well worth the so steep drive on way up to 9,000 ft.

      Gore Creek Campground

So good, I don’t want to tell you about it.

Gore Creek Campground is a true gem of the National Forest Service. If you are looking for a great boondocking location that is close to great trails and breathtaking views, this just might be the place for you. The entrance to the campground is ~2 miles off of I-70 Exit 180 on Bighorn Road. Only 10 minutes from Vail Village and 25 minutes from Frisco.

We stayed in Site #8, which provided plenty of room for our 22’ travel trailer and pickup. The sites each have a large picnic table and fire ring.

Pit toilets are spread through the campground and were very clean and well maintained. The campground hosts do a great job of keeping everything tidy and looking great. They also have bundles of firewood for sale for $7 at their site just inside the entrance to the campground.

I can’t say enough about this place. It’s probably my favorite spot to camp in Colorado. I almost didn’t post this review for fear of the secret getting out.

      Parry Peak — Psicc

Great campground, close to the pass and lots of hiking.

Some spots close to the road but it gets quiet at night as Independence pass is not heavily trafficked after dark.  It is in a great location, close to Twin Lakes but also all the hiking up the pass.  All first come first serve.  Pets are allowed, we had our dog with us.

      Snowy Peaks RV Park

      Great staff & Clean

Staff is accommodating and friendly, campground and facilities are clean, they are pet friendly. Have a club house, mail service, 24 clean efficient laundry room. Nothing allowed on their grass except the picnic table they provide, no shade tents, dog pens or mats we had a gravel area behind our site where we were allowed to put our dog pen, small foldable table with Our BBQ grill on it (they will allow BBQ grills on their picnic tables) and fire ring they provided for us.

Fall River Reservoir Dispersed Camping Trail

      My first Colorado camping spot!

I first camped in Colorado last year with a friend and we chose this dispersed due to it being close to travel too- yet still dispersed. I’ve come back 4 other times to camp here!

This trail does require some 4x4 action to get to the top. Lots of rocks, bumps, and pools of water to travel through to get anywhere.

The trail has a decent amount of dispersed sites along the way up to the top, although you can not camp the first mile or two, they are residential.

Even at the end of the trail, next to the reservoir there are some great spots to camp at. And a hike around the reservoir would show you that you could even do a bit of backpacking if you wanted to camp by a waterfall for the night.

This place has become a favorite camping spot of mine, and a place I love to bring friends. Quite clean, very scenic, and a beautiful creek rushing by most of the camp sites. There is also a really cool teepee stand waiting to be used to camp under at the top!

    Guide to Alma

Dispersed camping around Hoosier Pass sits at elevations over 11,000 feet, creating significant temperature drops at night even in summer months. Located between South Park and the Blue River valley, this region offers camping options ranging from primitive roadside sites to established campgrounds with amenities. Proper altitude acclimation becomes essential as many sites near Alma are situated between 10,000-12,000 feet.

    What to do

Alpine hiking: Access 14,000-foot peaks including Mt. Sherman, where Kite Lake Campground serves as a convenient basecamp. "Stunningly beautiful setting right at the base of Colorado 14ers Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln and Bross. There are a handful of dispersed sites available along the 4x4 road leading up to the Kite Lake Campground," notes Dave W., who recommends an early start for sunrise views.

Gold panning: Try your luck in local streams near Fairplay where Middlefork RV Resort offers on-site gold panning opportunities. "Simple and clean. Everything you need. Friendly staff and campers. Close to so much cool stuff!" reports Tony T. The resort provides easy access to historic mining areas and streams where visitors can practice traditional panning techniques.

Mountain biking: Explore forest service roads throughout the area with trails suitable for various skill levels. "There is a bit of foot traffic with hikers coming in but still really peaceful," notes Nicola at Hoosier Pass. Many campsites serve as perfect starting points for both casual and technical rides on nearby trails and old mining roads.

    What campers like

High elevation solitude: Less crowded than popular areas near Breckenridge. At McCullough Gulch Designated Dispersed Camping, Justin J. appreciated the peaceful setting: "Didn't see another person on a Wednesday night. Very peaceful and plenty of spots to choose from. Road was rocky but not that rough, easy to handle in a Crosstrek."

Wildlife viewing: Morning moose sightings are common in wooded areas, particularly near streams. Jenny B. at Boreas Pass Road Designated Dispersed Camping reports: "Wildlife was another highlight—there were clear signs of moose activity nearby, and fellow campers just up the road mentioned seeing a moose wander around their site."

Night sky viewing: Minimal light pollution creates excellent stargazing conditions. The altitude and distance from major cities provide exceptional clarity. "The night sky was stellar! It was only five minutes drive away from walmart, whole foods, starbucks, natural grocers, and lots of gas stations," shares Jiwon K. about camping at Peak One, highlighting how accessible amenities remain despite the remote feel.

    What you should know

Road conditions vary dramatically: Many dispersed camping areas require high-clearance vehicles. At Forest Road 130, Rachel H. advises: "Some roads were closed off by gates and didn't open until June 1. Specifically if you want to get to the sites on 130 S. But we were still able to snag a great spot."

Altitude sickness prevention: Drink plenty of water and acclimate gradually before strenuous activity. Jenny B. notes: "Being at a higher elevation, one person in our group did experience some mild altitude discomfort, even though we're from the Denver area—something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to elevation changes."

Temperature fluctuations: Pack clothing layers for 30-40°F temperature swings between day and night. Justin J. explains: "Temps were high 70s in the evenings and low 40s at night in mid July so prepare with layers."

    Tips for camping with families

Easy access sites for children: Choose locations with minimal hiking required from parking areas. Nora S. from Hoosier Pass recommends: "Pulled up on this spot after many failures on the way and it was great. Just a little camping ring and great views. What more can you ask for."

Lake activities for kids: Find camping near water features for swimming and exploration. Baby Doe Campground offers excellent options as Katie H. shares: "Nice sites with plenty of shade. Clean facilties and close to the lake. Really beautiful woods all around with soft pine need floors... great for camping!!!"

Pet-friendly trail selection: Choose less crowded hiking routes for leashed dogs. While pet friendly camping near Alma, Colorado is widely available, Jordyn B. observes at Hoosier Pass: "Not super private and lots of off leash dogs but beautiful walking trails!" Select morning hiking times when trails are less crowded and temperatures are cooler for pet comfort.

    Tips from RVers

Limited turnaround space: Scout ahead before driving large rigs down forest roads. Kevin M. cautions about Forest Road 130: "If you go on 130S, only go to the first big site you see on the left if you have a trailer. If you go past that, there is NO good turnaround and the road ends. I learned this the hard way."

Leveling challenges: Many sites require significant leveling blocks. Shelby S. found Middlefork RV Resort convenient: "The sites are all gravel, ours was nice and level. You can get either full hookups or water/electric only. There is a dump station on site."

Cell service for working campers: Signal strength varies by location and carrier. Zelia V. reports from Forest Road 130: "I work remotely so sadly cell signal is something I look for and I've had consistent reception here. It's usually 5G, sometimes drops to LTE but still usable."
