Dispersed Camping

Kirby Gulch

Kirby Gulch, near Georgetown, Colorado, is a fantastic spot for those who enjoy a more rugged camping experience. This area offers designated sites that are well-spaced, allowing for a bit of privacy while still being close to nature.

Visitors rave about the beautiful surroundings, with a creek nearby that’s perfect for kids to splash around in. The hiking opportunities are plentiful, with trails leading to stunning views and even a 4x4 trail that takes you up to a salt mine. As one camper noted, “There was a lot of good hiking and other fun things to do.”

Be prepared for cooler nights, especially if you're camping with kids, as temperatures can drop significantly. A few campers mentioned bringing extra blankets and even a small heater to stay cozy. The road to Kirby Gulch can be a bit rough, so a vehicle with four-wheel drive is recommended to navigate the bumps and holes.

If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat with plenty of outdoor activities, Kirby Gulch is a solid choice. Just remember to pack your sense of adventure and maybe a jacket for those chilly nights!

Worth the Rough Drive

Kirby Gulch is a fantastic spot for anyone seeking a peaceful, off-the-grid camping experience near Grant, Colorado. Situated off Route 1038, this dispersed camping area offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and easy access to outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife watching.

The campsites are well-spaced, providing plenty of privacy, and the area is generally clean, thanks to considerate campers. Since it’s a dispersed site, there are no amenities like water or toilets, so make sure to come prepared. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for accessing some of the sites, especially after rain or snow.

What makes Kirby Gulch truly special is its tranquility. You can enjoy the sound of the wind through the trees, the crisp mountain air, and dazzling stargazing at night. It’s also a great starting point for exploring nearby trails or simply soaking in the serene environment.

If you’re comfortable with primitive camping and leave-no-trace principles, Kirby Gulch is a hidden gem worth checking out.

People and bugs are the same problem

There was about 36 spots on a Friday morning (@1000am), was lucky to grab a spot that had a pull through and the spot was beautiful. We were lucky enough to find some leftover firewood when we got here and we were close enough to the river. The two major problems are the flys that will not leave the dogs alone and the constant cars that come through since the camping spots are so close to the road. Lots of campsites had spots saved 👎🏻 (if your friends wanna come up, tell them to get there on time 😒) other than that, great site, close access to shelf lake trail, which was beautiful and absolutely worth it.

Kirby Gulch

Went out this past weekend, we stayed at site 26. It was a good spot, a lot of good hiking and other fun things to do. Went up the 4x4 trail up to the salt mine at the top. If you have a vehicle with 4wd You should be fine. Around camp was decently busy with traffic and got somewhat dusty. But still a fun place to go

Very peaceful, bring a jacket!

We were able to get a site further back from the entrance, so traffic was to a minimum. There was occasional cars and OHVs back to some of the trailheads, but otherwise we were pretty much by ourselves!

It did get pretty cool at night, and our kids definitely let us know about it. Luckily we have extra blankets to insulate their bags and another person in our party had a small heater. But even in July, plan for cooler night time temps and rain!

Over 30 dispersed sites

Sites are all designated. You can’t come for the 1st mile along the road. Once you get past Geneva, campground and head up the small hill the sites appear on each side of the road. The ones on the left have the opportunity to be on the creek. The ones on the right are more sheltered and probably better for tents. Sites 25,26 and 27 appear to be good and site number 31 may be on the creek. It’s exposed but it’s big but it might be on the creek. The road to get in there is pretty gnarly. Definitely need four-wheel-drive. Lots of rocks and deep holes and even some flooded areas. It looks to be about 34 sites which is when we turned back there may be even more.

Accessible camping off guanella pass

Amazing dispersed camping, private. We brought our dogs and they enjoyed themselves. Very accessible- second weekend in august and was perfect! Around 55 degrees at night, 10,000ft elevation.

Ali Nu 2023

Brought my dog here in July and we had a nice time. Found a spot Friday around 11, most had filled up. I made it up the road to the gate in my Subaru forester but it was rough!

Beautiful alongside creek

The sites are all designated and there is nothing for the first mile. Drive past Geneva campground and the sites are about 3/4 mile in. The road gets very bumpy so low clearance vehicles are not advised. Saw a Subaru Outback make it okay but nothing less than that. The sites are well spaced out. We arrived on a Wednesday lunchtime and it was busy. Most sites taken. Now that Guanella Pass does not allow dispersed camping, Kirby and Buno Gulch are very busy. Would not advise arriving late on Friday, you’ll most likely be out of luck.

There are a lot of great hiking trails in this area along Guanella Pass so you will not get bored. If you have horses, Buno Gulch is a better option.

We only saw tents in the area as the road may be tricky for rigs with its holes and bumps.

The creek is a great place for kids to splash and play. When you first pull off Guanella Pass there is a great place to stop by the creek. We did not see any fish in it.

We will return in the fall when hopefully it will be quiet.

great alternative to nearby bruno gulch

the road gets a little rougher as you go down, but this keeps a lot of folks away which means I've always been able to find a spot. The very far end of the road crosses a river which is impassable during peak snowmelt season but a few more spots open up once the water levels go down
