Awesome spot

Easy access to twin lakes and Leadville. Pretty! But maybe a little crowded considering I was there mid week all the spots seemed to be taken up by late afternoon.

Up In The Mountains

Great spot to camp, saw hikers off in the distance a few times but overall all to myself. This site definitely requires high clearance! There were quite a few campsites nearby which were taken. I ended up just claiming the first one that caught my eye with no one around didn’t even try going to the one I had initially planned on going to, you’ll be driving around 5 mph with all the rocks and bumps in the road. Still very fun !

Nice little spot

Drove straight to the back, not many others camping. Can hear a few cars passing in the distance and not a ton of tree coverage but a great spot nonetheless

Late Sept Fall colors

We had a blast with this spot, arrived late at night and woke up inside an aspen grove. There is a lot of hiking trails and some cool spots to visit down by the lakes.

Please leave no trace!

Used to be great. Now it’s overly crowded and there’s toilet paper & human waste littered all around. Please take care of our land.

Gorgeous but rocky

There are so many dispersed sites in this area but most of them were pretty rocky and bumpy meant for more van /trailer camping. We saw some tents but definitely limited. Almost every site had a rock fire pit, stunning view, and decent tree coverage

Secluded, Unreal Views

Easy to find, many options for sites, pretty quiet right now. Really worth the drive. So many fire pits already though… I wish people would stop making new ones. Definitely want to come back here! Minimal trash around the sites. Very quiet at night.

Lots of spots and gorgeous views!

If you go up 24 toward the South Elbert trailhead, you’ll find lots of dispersed camping options for everything from RVs to tent camping.

We found a great little spot that had several fire rings and lots of space for parking. When we left, we saw that several groups were camping just above us and we had not heard or seen them much at all. The road into the site was a bit sketchy but doable in my 2WD Honda CRV.

We stayed here Aug. 19-21, 2022.

Views, Trails, Lots of Spaces

Great dispersed camping, easy to get to only a short way off the main road. We arrived 4pm on a Friday and all the spots with the best views were taken. Plenty further into the woods though we had multiple options still. The Colorado trail/CDT passes close by and was a great evening hike from our camp. We ended up leaving around 9pm because there were 3-4 campfires around us, one super smoky and we have a baby. A bummer for us but normal people probably wouldn’t have minded. Expect to have neighbors!

Near south Mt Elbert trailhead

If you have a 4x4 vehicle and can make your way toward the trailhead for south Mt Elbert, there are some amazing spots. A few spots allow you to pull off and set up a tent with great views. The site we stayed in was about 50 ft from the trailhead and could accommodate a group! It was right on the end of Lily Ponds, so a bit buggy, but absolutely beautiful and very private. Also a great point to start your hike from!

Easy & Free

These spots are super easy to access as long as you take it slow down 125B. It snowed/rained most of our stay, but Elbert & La Plata peaked through for some great views early morning. Close to lots of hikes and short drive to BV & Leadville. I could see it getting busy here in the summer, but we didn’t have any issues finding a spot on a Saturday night in the spring.

Stunning and FREE

This is an amazing dispersed camping area.  It begins with a trailhead parking area but just past the trailhead you will begin to see the dispersed sites with the rock fire rings.  They are every where and the ground is well packed.  The road is rather bumpy and when it rains it will be a total mess.  Most of the time this has to be extremely busy.  We were lucky and came in during the week and there was almost no one.  It was also October and a little cool, snow in the mountain tops.  Go up as far up the mountain as you can.  The back drop of the mountains is spectacular.  It was even better since we had had a light snow.  Twin Lakes was also very beautiful in the valley.  Verizon service was great.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best dispersed camping spots around Twin Lakes, Colorado?

The best dispersed camping spots around Twin Lakes are found along the road to South Mt. Elbert trailhead (Forest Road 125B). Prime spots are located just past the trailhead parking area, where you'll find numerous established sites with rock fire rings. For more secluded camping, continue further toward the South Mt. Elbert trailhead where there are amazing spots with mountain views. Sites are available for various camping styles, from RVs to tents, though the most scenic spots with views tend to fill up quickly, especially by Friday afternoons. The area features well-packed ground and many sites offer decent tree coverage within aspen groves.

Is dispersed camping at Twin Lakes, Colorado free?

Yes, dispersed camping at Twin Lakes is free. There are no fee stations or payment requirements for staying at these dispersed sites, making it an economical option for campers. This area provides complimentary access to numerous established campsites with fire rings and beautiful surroundings without any camping fees.

What is the best time of year for dispersed camping at Twin Lakes, Colorado?

The prime season for dispersed camping at Twin Lakes is late spring through early fall (May-September). Summer offers pleasant temperatures and full access to hiking trails, though sites fill quickly due to popularity. Late spring provides fewer crowds but may have occasional rain or snow. Early fall showcases beautiful aspen colors with cooler temperatures. The area can experience precipitation year-round - even summer campers report snow/rain, so come prepared for changing mountain weather. Winter camping is possible but challenging due to snow and cold conditions.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to access Twin Lakes dispersed camping areas?

While 4WD is not absolutely required for all Twin Lakes dispersed sites, it's highly recommended, especially for accessing the best spots near the Mt. Elbert trailhead. The access road (125B) is described as bumpy and can become muddy after rain. Some areas require high clearance vehicles. That said, with careful driving and by taking it slow, smaller vehicles can reach many of the sites closest to the main road. The further you go toward the trailhead, the rougher the road conditions become.

What regulations apply to dispersed camping near Twin Lakes?

When dispersed camping at Twin Lakes, you must use existing fire rings rather than creating new ones, as there are already many established rings throughout the area. Pack out all trash and waste - the area has unfortunately experienced issues with human waste and toilet paper being left behind. Camping is limited to existing, disturbed sites only to minimize environmental impact. While specific stay limits aren't noted, the standard 14-day limit typical for national forest dispersed camping likely applies. For the most current regulations, check with the local Forest Service office before your trip.

Are there dispersed camping areas with views of Twin Lakes?

Yes, there are spectacular viewpoint sites throughout the area. The most coveted spots offer stunning views of Mt. Elbert Forebay and surrounding mountains, including glimpses of Elbert and La Plata peaks, particularly beautiful in early morning light. These prime view sites tend to fill up quickly, especially by Friday afternoon. While some sites are in aspen groves with more tree coverage, others are more open with panoramic vistas. For the best views, arrive early and look for sites along the higher elevations of the access road toward the South Mt. Elbert trailhead.
