A wide-open meadow framed by conifer-covered slopes greets campers arriving at Bruno Gulch Dispersed, a free Forest Service area tucked into a valley along the South Platte River corridor in Pike National Forest. The 19 designated sites are spread across the area, with some set back into the trees and a few running along the main road with open sightlines toward the surrounding ridgelines. Sites on the right side of the road sit on a slight incline, so campers with leveling concerns should arrive early enough to claim a flat spot. Nearby, Geneva Park Campground provides a developed alternative less than a mile to the east.
The creek running through the area is a consistent draw. "Make sure you hike up the creek area," notes wayne H., and several campers mention wading and playing in the water as a highlight. A small pond near the road has even hosted paddleboards. The meadow setting raises the possibility of wildlife sightings at dawn and dusk, and at least one visitor has reported moose and mountain goats near the campsites, though encounters are never guaranteed.
Trail access is a strong reason to choose this spot. The Bruno Gulch trailhead sits immediately adjacent to the campground, connecting to the Bruno Gulch Connector, South Park Trail 600, and Kirby Gulch to the north. Day hikes toward Guanella Pass and routes to Mount Bierstadt are also within reach. The campground is free, allows fires, permits pets, and can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Drinking water is available on site.
Crowd management matters here. Since dispersed camping on Guanella Pass was discontinued, Bruno Gulch has absorbed significant overflow, and weekend sites fill completely. Arriving Thursday or early Friday gives the best chance at a spot. Insects, particularly mosquitoes and biting flies, can be aggressive in mid-summer despite repellent, so campers visiting in July should come prepared. Road conditions vary by season, and the access road was reported as rough but passable in spring 2025 without four-wheel drive. One quirk worth knowing: the campground sits under a Denver flight path, and airplane noise can be noticeable overnight. Campers wanting more camping spots around Pike National Forest will find additional options across the surrounding national forest land.
