Maumee Bay State Park Campground offers tent, RV, cabin, and glamping accommodations along Lake Erie, while KOA locations in Perrysburg and Monroe provide family-friendly camping environments with various amenities. The region includes a mix of established campgrounds with hookups and more primitive tent-only areas like Wiregrass Lake Metropark, which features only three rustic campsites adjacent to a small fishing lake.

Many campgrounds in the Ottawa Hills region operate seasonally, with most sites available from April through October and limited winter camping options. Maumee Bay State Park remains open year-round, while other facilities like Twin Acres and Bluegrass campgrounds close during colder months. As one camper noted, "Wiregrass Lake Metropark has 3 camp sites available near fishable wiregrass lake. Open year round. Firewood provided. Reservation required." Access to camping areas generally requires reservations, particularly at popular locations during summer weekends. Most established campgrounds provide electric hookups, water, and sanitary facilities, though amenities vary significantly between locations.

Waterfront access represents a key draw for campers in the region, with Sterling State Park and Maumee Bay offering Lake Erie shoreline camping. The camping experience varies substantially across the area's campgrounds. Several visitors mention proximity to highways as a consideration, particularly at Monroe-Toledo North KOA. A reviewer observed that "the rustic camp sites are actually backed up to [the freeway] which kind of lessened the experience a tiny bit." Smaller campgrounds like Wiregrass Lake Metropark provide a more secluded atmosphere with their limited sites, though reviews mention mosquitoes can be problematic in summer months due to standing water. Family-friendly amenities like swimming areas, fishing ponds, and organized activities appear frequently in campground reviews, making the region suitable for campers seeking both recreational opportunities and basic outdoor experiences.

      Maumee Bay State Park Campground

We camped in September 2026, site 51. Our pad was pretty level and long for us with a short camper. The fire ring was permanently in the ground, which is nice so that people don’t move it around. It was a short walk to the shower house, which was really nice and clean good showers. And we happen to be there during one of their fall fest weekends and they had all kinds of activities for kids to do which was really nice. They have a little trails that go in between some of the campgrounds and around one of the little ponds. Check-in was super easy and there is a dump station as well. What’s nice about a lot of these sites is that there is some kind of trees or big bushes that separates you from your neighbor.

Sites are modest but it's. A nicely maintained area. Sites are nice and flat and the people in the office are very nice.

      Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park

      Great stop over

This isn’t a remote getaway, it’s a great spot that’s close to everything you need. Some reviews commented on the highway noise, I had no issues. Staff was friendly and helpful, facilities were clean. There’s an illuminated walk path that connects to the Walmart which is super convenient.

      Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA

      Home State Kudos

I came, desperate and exhausted...I saw, an opportunity for an extended stay...I conquered, my inexperience was met with warmth and accommodating camp attendants and camp neighbors. And God was with me the entire journey from Virginia to this Blessed Ground in Michigan. Seems forever had I longed for so much Peace and Quiet. Forever grateful am I. 😇🥰

      Maumee Bay State Park Campground

      Great State Park Campground

I spent one night passing through the area after visiting Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The hedges separating the campsites provides some privacy and it was a quiet location.

The park’s beach on Lake Erie is nearby. While hidden by the landscaping, the bathhouse was conveniently located and the path well lit without detracting from the camping experience at the campsite.

      Deshler Crossroads Park

      Camping right near the Tracks

Deshler, OH offers a campground in Crossroads Park, famous for 4 sets of train tracks and the ability to see trains from all over. This campground is best suited for train enthusiasts, because you are with 10-20 feet of the tracks. There is a grassy field for tent8ng and parking spots near the pavilion for RV's. It is not big right friendly. Max trailer size should be about 20'. There is a porta potty on-site as well as electrical outlets and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. Gas and convenience stores nearby. Suggested donation is $20/night.

      Twin Acres Campground

Great place for our quick overnight

We were greeted by a very friendly staff and had very little trouble finding our spot. Park has several mobile homes and long-term campers, but that did not detract from our experience. Our pull through was nice and level. Would stop in again if we're ever back this way.

    Guide to Ottawa Hills

Camping options near Ottawa Hills, Ohio span across Lucas County and neighboring counties within a 30-mile radius. The region experiences moderate seasonal temperature changes with summer averages of 80-85°F and considerably colder winter conditions from December through February. Most campgrounds in the area offer sites on relatively flat terrain, with several providing access to Lake Erie's shoreline where water temperature fluctuates drastically between seasons.

    What to do

Hiking on maintained trails: White Oak Campground connects directly to the 15.5-mile Scout Trail loop that runs through Oak Openings. One camper noted, "I camped at this campground after completing the 15.5 mile Scout Trail loop (aka 'Hiking Trail' and Yellow trail) that runs through Oak Openings. I was able to park my car here in the morning, hop on the trail, and return later in the day."

Biking on paved paths: Maumee Bay State Park Campground offers excellent cycling opportunities on flat terrain. According to a visitor, "It is also an amazing place to ride bikes, everything is flat and there are also plenty of bike paths." The park also offers bike rentals for those who don't bring their own.

Fishing opportunities: Several smaller lakes provide fishing options beyond Lake Erie. At Big Sandy Campground, campers can access two lakes, with one dedicated to fishing. A reviewer mentioned that "The kids said the lake was getting a little more fishy and less swim friendly," indicating the fishing-focused nature of one of the lakes.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the natural barriers between sites at White Oak Campground, where the campground design creates seclusion despite being a smaller facility. One visitor described, "The sites are very nicely spaced and shaded, and not right on the parking lot."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness is frequently mentioned in positive reviews. At Twin Acres Campground, a camper shared, "Staff were really friendly. It was crowded on the weekends, but during the week it emptied out." Maintenance of facilities appears consistent across the best places to camp near Ottawa Hills.

Free amenities: Several campgrounds offer unexpected free services. White Oak Campground provides complementary firewood, with a camper noting, "The firewood is free, which is amazing. There is also a dish washing station near the restrooms, with a huge sink and hot water."

    What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds around Ottawa Hills operate from April/May through October/November. According to a review of Bluegrass Campground, "The campground is filled with mostly seasonal campers and the campsites are very close together. There are large trees on the property for shade."

Highway noise: Several campgrounds are located near major roads. A visitor to Monroe-Toledo North KOA observed, "Campground is right off the expressway and surrounding area are farm fields. There are some trees but I wouldn't call this camping in a forest by any means."

Water conditions: Standing water in low-lying areas can create mosquito issues. At Wiregrass Lake Metropark, which has only three campsites, a reviewer warned about "super mosquito like so bring the deep woods Bug juice as standing water seemed pretty much the landscape at any point that dipped 3 feet or more."

    Tips for camping with families

Off-season visits: For quieter family experiences, consider camping mid-week or during shoulder seasons. A Maumee Bay visitor shared, "Even though this large campground was full when we were there on a weekend in September, we did not feel overcrowded. There were many empty campsites when we were there during the week in May."

Swimming options: Monroe-Toledo North KOA offers a sandy beach area for kids. A camper mentioned, "There is a sandy beach, small lake, water slide, and plenty of family activities. It is very loud until about 11 pm."

Holiday activities: Many campgrounds organize special events during holidays. A reviewer at Monroe-Toledo North KOA wrote, "I've been going to this campground for years, but mainly for the Halloween camping. It's a fun time of the year to go and the kids always have a blast. Most sites decorate and some site go all out with haunted houses."

    Tips from RVers

Site configurations: Several campgrounds offer pull-through options and full hookups. At Sterling State Park Campground, "Sites are nice and large paved slabs, most trees are immature offering little shade." Another camper added, "This park will accommodate any size travel trailer, fifth wheel camper of any kind, the pull throughs are huge."

Sewer connections: Check the location of sewer hookups when booking. One camper at Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA noted, "Full hookup but sewer connection was at very back of spot. We used dump station."

Spacing considerations: Site dimensions vary significantly across the best camping options near Ottawa Hills, Ohio. At Maumee Bay State Park, "All sites are very generous in size and appear to be spaced with a decent amount of space apart with foliage providing varying levels of privacy. All camper pads are paved and long enough to accommodate large RVs."
