    Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

    Quiet park with easy access. Lake views are not at campsites.

    This is an attractive and quiet park on an Army Corps of Engineers lake. The lake itself isn't visible from the Rocky Point Loop A, the only electric area, but the surrounding terrain is still attractive and the drive in over the dam is quite dramatic with large flat rocks jutting out from colored canyon walls.

    There's not much of a town in Santa Rosa, as the Route 66 revival seems not to have hit there yet. It's more alive than Tucumcari, though. That town has completely died. Get groceries before you come in because the local stores are "food desert" level.

    Older parks like this seem to have been designed before today's large Class A motorhomes, as these are very tight side to side and front to back. This one is also tilted seriously toward the front. The layout is odd with sites looking in each other's windows -- if there were anyone here. There are just three rigs on this Tuesday night.

    Park staffing is minimal with all interactions done online and no in-person check-in. The property is clean, however, so visitors and staff are working together on that.

    I haven't been to the dump out station yet but according to the posted map board it's in another area of the park. That should be a chance to see some more views of the lake before heading out tomorrow.

    If you're headed this way, Santa Rosa Lake makes a quiet stop on Route 66 that's a short trip back to the freeway when you're ready.

    Ghost Ranch

    Campground avg but overall lots of things to do

    Some good hikes, corral (horseback rides), museum, pack in pack out, & bring your own water (drought conditions; there is water available but don't rely on their water if for no other reason to support their conservation of it--don't recall any water hookups). Friendly staff. Did not avail ourselves of meal plan. Beautiful night skies. Still in mid to upper 90s in September (hot in afternoon). Beware that winds can gust suddenly & hard, including strong dust devils (a devil came through & tore up some tents & sunshades including mangling aluminum frames of some shades).

    Columbine Campground (NM)

    A little tight

    Our spot was close to the road. We didn't have much shade by the table and fire-ring. But it does have access to more shade behind the site where you can pitch a tent and sit by the creek.

    There's a nice hiking trail at the back on the campground you can drive to with parking.

    The camp-hosts were very friendly and helpful.

    Pines Group Campground

    A whole lotta nothing

    Most campgrounds in the area closed after Labor Day so we reserved an RV spot for 3 days to spend the weekend with the grands. Based on all info on the USDA site we set out on our trip prepared to fill our tanks with water once we got there. Upon arrival we noticed there are NO water hookups at the individual site!! The description said potable water at the site. Potable water was only available at the two restrooms from the water fountain hookup. At one faucet, there was no way to park to get water without blocking traffic in the loop. We also found out there were very limited generator hours that were NOT disclosed on the website! When there are NO electric hookups most RVs are dependent on generators for AC, microwave, etc. Thats fine if you can use your generator. When it's hot outside or you have planned your trip with generator use it's very restrictive. Also, tent camping is mixed in with RVs so generator use is a problem. If tents had their own areas that wouldn't be an issue. Why not tell everyone up front on websites?!! Over$30 for a site without any hookups is ridiculous. If you need more water, you would have to pack up& reattach your RV to fill up!! They should clearly state this on websites! Might as well boondock& not have neighbors close by! So that's what we did!

    Yucca — Ute Lake State Park

    Beautiful, serene lake with nicely spaced spots and a serious trash problem

    Ute Lake is much larger than it appears when you first enter the Yucca camping area. This site, Yucca #1, looks directly at trees with a partially obstructed lake view, but a short and pleasant walk around the shore offers numerous grassy areas, some with shade, and several small beaches and a boat ramp. 

    The open sighting and small loop design mean that you can see clearly into and around most areas, which is great for dog walking, something I do lot of in these parks. There are burrs in what appears to be grass, so be careful as you and your dog will pick them up without seeing them. Birds are abundant here, although not species that I recognize being from Texas. I would definitely poke around on eBird and study the ornithology here if I were spending more time.

    Water quality is good. I wonder if it comes from the lake, which was dammed from the Canadian River for that purpose in 1963. Running through my RO system shows 15 PPM, meaning it was very clean going in.

    Now for the downside. The entire camping area has a serious trash problem. The on-site hosts and staff either don't actually look around or they don't consider it their job to pick up trash. 

    Every site and day use area is littered with plastic, clothing, cans and bottles, cigarette butts, and dog poo. While it's not the "fault" of the staff that people do this, it is their responsibility to fix it because I would never come back here and camp around trash. The Texas State Park system clearly holds itself to a different standard than New Mexico as I didn't see one piece of stray trash in any Texas park. This is disappointing, especially when New Mexico camping spot fees and passes are quite high, much more than Texas charges.

    If you're with the New Mexico park system and reading this, please hire or recruit some volunteers to clean. Why have a camp host if they're just camping themselves? And if you visit these parks and can't pick up after yourself, please stop coming and keep your trash at your own house.

    Coyote Creek State Park Campground

    Nicely maintained

    This was our first trip to Coyote Creek State Park. We heard about the new loop and that appeared to have some great new sites. We were surprised on how great the new sites are. The shelters over the nice picnic table is huge! We walked the park and it was clear that the entire park was meticulously maintained. The only down side was a slip and fall on the drainage concrete in the road. Luckily, it was only a minor wrist sprain. The local ranger saw the fall and asked if I was ok. Apparently, the concrete has been an issue for some trailers and people. The toilets in the campground are clean and well maintained. We routinely visit NM state parks and this one has to be the best maintained. The side by side electrical sites isn't for us and there are other options. We plan to be back.
