Angel Peak Scenic View Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Six miles of gravel road off US Highway 550 leads to Angel Peak Scenic View Campground, a rim-top BLM site in the badlands south of Bloomfield, New Mexico. The approach itself sets expectations: the first quarter mile runs rough washboard, and the road can turn slick after rain. Drivers with rigs longer than 30 feet should note that only a few sites can accommodate larger vehicles, and the one group site is the most viable option for anything approaching 35 feet.

The campground sits on the edge of Kutz Canyon, with open sightlines toward Angel Peak and, on clear days, the La Plata and San Juan mountains in the distance. Nine developed sites line the rim, each with a picnic table on a concrete slab, a fire grate, and gravel pathways. Three sites include covered shelters, one of which is a double shelter suited to larger groups. Two accessible vault toilets serve the campground, and trash receptacles are on-site. No water or electrical hookups are available. As Deacon J. puts it: "Bring plenty of water and TP if making a few nights of it."

Wind exposure comes up repeatedly in reviews. Most sites sit with little protection on the canyon rim, and several campers mention arriving to strong gusts, particularly in afternoon and evening hours. Noise from nearby oil rigs is also audible at some sites. Cell service is generally reported as reliable, with one reviewer picking up over-the-air TV channels, which may appeal to campers who need to stay connected.

The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites fill quickly on weekends, and with only nine spots available, arriving early matters. Angel Peak NM Badlands Dispersed Camping provides an overflow option nearby, and the Angel Peak Scenic Area offers additional access to the canyon. A short rim trail departs from the west side of the campground. Three day-use picnic areas along the access road provide additional stopping points for those passing through.

Campers who do well here tend to be self-sufficient, comfortable with no-hookup conditions, and prepared for variable weather. It works well as an overnight stop on routes toward Mesa Verde or Moab, and draws those specifically interested in the canyon badlands geology.

Campers frequently mentioned spectacular canyon rim views and well-maintained free sites with basic amenities. Some visitors expressed concerns about oil field noise, but most found the location peaceful and worthwhile despite primitive conditions.

The campsite is great getting to it is not.

Badly washboarded road with sand pockets and the workers at the mine just about ran me over. Just don't drive it without 4x4 when it's wet.

SiteThe big one with the shelter and two picnic tables. At the end of the campground.

Breathe Taking View

We arrived early evening and had no trouble getting a spot. There was a storm rolling in so it was very windy. It takes about 20 ish minutes to get to the sites once you get on the dirt road. Each of the sites had gorgeous views. We stayed at the second to last site on the right side. The restroom was right next to us which was convenient. At night it got pretty chilly. Great place to see the sunset or sunrise! Highly recommend this place! i’m

Campsites to close together

I had the best site in the park (far end of road) but next site is less than 100 yards away. This is in the Bisti oil fields and there is constant sound of compressors from every direction. Not loud but there. Most views, though spectacular in a way are marred by oilfield equipment everywhere. The countryside is beautiful, but definitely not a wilderness experience!

Angel Peak Scenic Area

Roughly 10 spots here. Great views from the canyon rim to the canyon below, across to angel peak, and the La Platas and San Juans in the distance. Fire pits, picnic tables, and some open-sided shelters, vault toilet.

Only 4 stars due to wind exposure in most spots.

Nice spot

We stopped by here for the night on the way from Ft Worth to Moab. The only reason I didn't give it 5-stars is because we never saw it in the light. Arrived around 11pm and rolled out around 6am. But there were a few spots and all spaced out enough not to be right on top of someone else. Clean vault toilets were a plus.

The road up is a bit rutted but nothing horrible. Could see an issue if the area gets sustained rain.

Stunning view

It looks like a miniature Grand Canyon. Striations in the rock show its sedimentary origin, and the erosion reveals voids under the layers. We camped on the rim where the bottom drops out precipitously. Hikes along the sheer cliffs test the meddle and nerve of brave hikers.

About New Mexico sunrises and sunsets, there are two shows daily, no reservations required!

Easy Idyllic Camping

You turn off the main highway and follow the dirt road to the back of the park. Gorgeous views of the canyon / badlands as you drive the 5-6 miles in. You’re going to think you’re missing all the great views as you go to the back for the campground but don’t worry. There are bathrooms throughout but I haven’t seen any shower even though the listing says shower. Each site has a nice table and many have a covered table. Stay here on your way to Mesa Verde or Arches or Canyonland.

Rough entrance with nice rewards

It’s about 6 miles from the hwy with the first 1/4 mile being beyond washboard. After that little stretch it’s on and off washboard. I can imagine if it rained it looks like it could be quite slick. Didn’t count, but I think about 9 sites half with a covered picnic table and campfire ring. A couple sites seemed to be geared towards tent camping while some of the others were only big enough for the smallest rv campers and a couple that might squeeze in a 30’. Their is one group site that even the big rigs could get into, but that’s only one and these sites can fill up fast. So it’s a gamble expecting a site that your rig will fit especially if you have something bigger than 20’. I felt quite lucky to find 3 sites available with my 22’ tt after beating myself and the contents in the trailer to get here. Near the entrance theirs parking at a overlook and day use picnic area halfway to the camping sites with vaulted toilets. Not much for hiking trails at the camp sites. Only one I found on the west side of the campground that follows the rim, but it’s short.

2nd time visit.

This is my second visit here this time with my wife. After I shared how amazing the night skies where she wanted to join me on my next trip. We will be spending a couple days here and the onwards to Bayfeild CO. It's been warm in the afternoon with no trees in our boondocking spot. We have been running the AC most afternoons till around 6-7pm. The evenings cool enough to just open all the trailers window and enjoy the evening. We've been grilling outdoors and sitting for hours at night enjoying the night skies. The dogs love it here too, plenty of trails for walks. As of now it's still is a no burn. Cell service has been good and over the air TV has plenty of channels to choose from.

Beautiful sunsets, peaceful nights.

Spent three nights at this BLM campsite near Bloomfield NM. Amazing views, hiking trails, unreal sunsets and super peaceful nights. There are no services at this campsite. Cell service was good and decent WiFi, I also had available 10 over the air TV channels. This campsite is about 6 miles off HWY 550 with the first 1 1/2 miles being pretty washboard roads. Take it easy because it's worth the stay. First come, first served on spots and there is only about 9 of them.

Perfect Hidden Gem when visiting Bisti Badlands

Access to the Angel Peak Scenic Area is off US Highway 550, 15 miles south of Bloomfield on County Road 7175. Follow the gravel road along the canyon rim for approximately six miles to reach the campground. It is important to note the gravel road may become dangerous in bad weather.

First of picnic areas is a mile down a gravel road. Many RV's seem to be using this for boondocking. I don't blame them, but try and keep them open for day trippers if possible. The Picnic areas are on the rim of the canyon. The campground is 6 miles down the same road.

Three picnic areas and a campground are located along the canyon rim overlooking Angel Peak and the Kutz Canyon badlands. Three picnic areas(Sage, Castle Rock, and Cliffs). In total there are seven developed sites located along the rim road. Each site has a shelter, tables on a concrete slab, a gravel pathway, and a fire grate. Trash cans are located in all three picnic areas. There are vault toilets available at both Sage and Cliffs picnic areas. These are BLM sites and are incredibly well maintained in the Winter. No electrical hookups or water is available.

Angel Peak Campground has nine sites available for tent camping. They each have picnic tables on a concrete underfoot, gravel pathways, and fire grates. Picnic shelters are located at three campsites; two with single shelters and one with a double shelter that seems to be a great spot for larger groups. Two accessible vault toilets and trash receptacles are in the campground.

There is a nature trail that heads though light brush and along the rim to a beautiful bench that overlooks the incredible canyon.

Wonderful little campsite

An excellent little campsite that is FOC and quiet. Make sure you proceed past other sites almost to the end and you'll be glad you did. Pack it in/pack it out at this site. Though we have a secure camper we do utilize bear canisters and rat sacks. There are toilets so no meed to dig (and the ground was cold so good thing). No water or electricity so you wind up meeting hard core enthusiasts who typically offer some awesome suggestions of things not online. We were blessed to receive some sight seeing tips and throughly enjoyed it. Bring plenty of water and TP if making a few nights of it. Boots stayed on all day and dry!

The entrance is very understated and underwhelming, you will pass a oil construction area as you enter the park. As you continue driving almost instantly notice the gorge. You will pass three day use areas all of which offer amazing views. Continue to drive until you reach the campground (which by the way is free) there are six campsites situated on the rim of the canyon. All campgrounds have picnic tables, some have covered picnic tables with fire rings. There are very well maintained trails that offer spectacular sights from all direction. There is vault toilets that are very clean, but no electricity, trash or water. So trash in, trash out.

How do I get to Angel Peak Scenic Area and its campground?

Angel Peak Scenic Area is accessed off US Highway 550, approximately 15 miles south of Bloomfield, New Mexico, via County Road 7175. After turning onto this gravel road, follow it along the canyon rim for about 6 miles to reach the campground. The first quarter-mile of the road is particularly rough with severe washboard conditions, then alternates between smooth and washboard sections. Note that the entrance is understated and you'll pass an oil construction area as you enter. The road may become hazardous during wet weather, so check conditions before traveling.

Sunset and sunrise create magical lighting conditions across the badlands landscape, with the layered, striated rock formations glowing in warm colors. Night photography is equally rewarding with clear skies providing excellent star visibility.

What facilities are available at Angel Peak Campground?

Vault toilets are available throughout the campground area, eliminating the need to dig catholes. There are no water or electrical hookups, making this a primitive camping experience. The campground includes approximately 9 sites with a few designated as group sites. This is a pack-it-in/pack-it-out location with no garbage service, so campers must take all trash with them when departing.
