Six miles of gravel road off US Highway 550 leads to Angel Peak Scenic View Campground, a rim-top BLM site in the badlands south of Bloomfield, New Mexico. The approach itself sets expectations: the first quarter mile runs rough washboard, and the road can turn slick after rain. Drivers with rigs longer than 30 feet should note that only a few sites can accommodate larger vehicles, and the one group site is the most viable option for anything approaching 35 feet.
The campground sits on the edge of Kutz Canyon, with open sightlines toward Angel Peak and, on clear days, the La Plata and San Juan mountains in the distance. Nine developed sites line the rim, each with a picnic table on a concrete slab, a fire grate, and gravel pathways. Three sites include covered shelters, one of which is a double shelter suited to larger groups. Two accessible vault toilets serve the campground, and trash receptacles are on-site. No water or electrical hookups are available. As Deacon J. puts it: "Bring plenty of water and TP if making a few nights of it."
Wind exposure comes up repeatedly in reviews. Most sites sit with little protection on the canyon rim, and several campers mention arriving to strong gusts, particularly in afternoon and evening hours. Noise from nearby oil rigs is also audible at some sites. Cell service is generally reported as reliable, with one reviewer picking up over-the-air TV channels, which may appeal to campers who need to stay connected.
The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites fill quickly on weekends, and with only nine spots available, arriving early matters. Angel Peak NM Badlands Dispersed Camping provides an overflow option nearby, and the Angel Peak Scenic Area offers additional access to the canyon. A short rim trail departs from the west side of the campground. Three day-use picnic areas along the access road provide additional stopping points for those passing through.
Campers who do well here tend to be self-sufficient, comfortable with no-hookup conditions, and prepared for variable weather. It works well as an overnight stop on routes toward Mesa Verde or Moab, and draws those specifically interested in the canyon badlands geology.
