      Round Valley State Park Campground

Peaceful Wilderness Escape for Adventurous Families

There's something wonderfully special about escaping into nature where the only sounds are rustling leaves, birds singing and the gentle movement of water along the shoreline. Nestled among the wooded hills surrounding the beautiful Round Valley Reservoir, this rustic SP campground offers families a chance to disconnect from everyday distractions and enjoy a little wilderness adventure together. Unlike traditional campgrounds, the campsites are accessible only by hiking or boating, so getting anywhere here requires some planning and a willingness to travel light. Once you've arrived, you'll find secluded, wooded campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Amenities are basic, with pit toilets and no showers, but the beautiful reservoir, scenic hiking trails, fishing and kayaking opportunities more than make up for the lack of modern conveniences. Our kids loved exploring the woods, spotting wildlife and gathering around a crackling campfire at night to share stories beneath the stars. For families comfortable with the hike, I'd recommend choosing one of the campsites along the reservoir shoreline for the lovely water views and peaceful surroundings. Just remember that swimming is limited to the park's designated beach area. Round Valley isn't your typical family campground, but for adventurous families who enjoy hiking, camping under the stars and making wonderful memories together, it's a beautiful place to experience nature at its finest!

      Neversink River Resort

      Cool Riverside Campground

I'll start by saying this is a site-specific review (C20). I booked using Campspot and didn't select my own site but put in the criteria for my rig (30ft TT plus truck) and got a 50A back-in spot. The site was big but abnormal. Between the picnic table placement and the trees, I ended up right around 50ft from the electric and water, and the water spigot was so low I could barely put on my camco filter. With the uneven dirt roads, I had to unhitch with my truck in a gigantic puddle (lol). The site was otherwise fine aside from my gate code not working on Day 2. As for the campground as a whole, I thought it was pretty unique place by the river that offered several good amenities and activities, like downstream river tubing, an arcade, bathroom/shower facilities, a small store, little trails, and more. I would say this place borders the more primitive side.

Delaware Water Gap / Pocono Mountain KOA

      Great off season camping

We camped here in our pop up for our Anniversary in November. We were impressed with the cleanliness and available amenities for the time of year we were camping in! Close proximity to DWG and PA AND NJ attractions.

      Kittatinny Campground

      AWFUL

We reserved for a day. Very bad service. The river is super dirty and they did not even clean the trash cans. Besides, the fire ring has no grill cooking grate, so if you don’t bring your own NO GRILLING. Ryan was the person in front that took care of us, he was rude, my kids felt weird because he was not welcoming at all. Also, we try to ask for a partial refund since we did not felt comfortable since the beginning, and they said NO. We have experience camping, but this one was simply THE WORST. We lost the money but we won’t put our kids in a difficult situation. Thanks.

      Jellystone Park™ Gardiner

      Overall good stay

We stay at a lot of Jellystone parks so have become accustomed to the park layouts and activities. This one was well maintained with clean facilities. Some things like the mini golf and fire pits needed maintenance. The pools were nice but get very busy later in the day. The sites up on the hills are nice but beware, it’s a hill! There is little to no WiFi or cell service or it gets easily bogged down, so be ready for that. Food was basic but good. Some activities like bingo were a bit chaotic and there were a lot of ground hornets around the jumping pillows. Would totally go again.

      Camp Taylor Campground

Privacy & quiet hours are king

We’ve been to Camp Taylor twice now for tent camping: September 2021 and May 2023. We stayed at the rustic tent sites both times, and there was room for 2 cars and 2 tents. Depending on how you want your setup, there are some that are more secluded and others that are close together and would be great for group camping.

The staff are all lovely and take the time to explain the rules both in-person at check-in and on the forms they provide at the time of booking. They are not hiding how seriously they take rules like quiet hours, and it will keep campers like me coming back. If you are respectful of the folks around you and especially during the posted quiet hours, you will have no problems.

The office and shop keep supply of snacks, firewood, and gifts. There are flush toilets mapped in spots of the tent sites (SUCH a pleasant surprise! I was expecting a porta-potty or vault toilet), and hot showers are available at the same complex as the office.

      Voorhees State Park Campground

      Clean and well maintained!

I spent 4 days and 3 nights with my 6th grade Girl Scouts. We were at sites 23 and 24 which worked out great because they back up against each other. The bathrooms were super clean and well maintained. There are outlets at the bathroom building by the sink to charge any electronics. The playground is adequate and the field is big for playing.  There are many things to do close by too like the observatory, Round Valley beach, Grounds for Art, etc. We all really enjoyed ourselves and plan on returning.

      Tobyhanna State Park Campground

      Awesome lakeside camping 🤩

We were looking for a lakeside campground with a spacious campsite that could comfortably fit two large tents and two vehicles. We chose Tobyhanna State Park, and it turned out to be absolutely wonderful.

We stayed at Site 113, which had plenty of space on the right side of the campsite for two large tents, with enough room to park two vehicles as well. While the campsites are fairly close to one another, most visitors come here to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, and everyone seemed very respectful of each other’s privacy.

Just a one-minute walk from our campsite, there was a very clean restroom, hot showers, and a laundry facility. Right next to it, there was a volleyball court, as well as easy access to the lake with a boat launch and great spots for fishing.

On our very first day, the park rangers warned us that bears sometimes visit the campground, so they recommended storing all food in the car overnight. We followed their advice and had no issues.

Overall, I would give Tobyhanna State Park a perfect 10 out of 10. We had an amazing experience and will definitely be coming back!

    Guide to Oak Ridge

Northern New Jersey's Oak Ridge area sits where the southern Appalachian Mountains create rolling hills and valleys at elevations between 900-1,400 feet. Camping here means experiencing distinct seasonal changes, with warm summers averaging 75-85°F and fall temperatures dropping to 45-65°F. Winter camping options remain limited, with most campgrounds operating from April through October.

    What to do

Hike the Appalachian Trail sections: The famous AT passes near several campgrounds, offering day hiking opportunities ranging from 3-15 miles. At Stokes State Forest, trails connect directly to the AT. "Did a small part of the Appalachian trail while there (about 15 miles). Would love to go back when I'm better shape and try the whole trail," notes one visitor.

Explore multiple waterways: The region features several lakes and streams ideal for paddling and fishing. At Panther Lake Camping Resort, campers can rent boats to use on the lake. A visitor mentioned, "The lake and pool were a big plus, especially for hot days. While I did not take advantage, you are allowed to rent boats and take them out on the lake."

Visit High Point Monument: This landmark sits at 1,803 feet above sea level, marking New Jersey's highest elevation point. "You can drive to High Point monument that is 1803 feet above sea level and you get a spectacular panorama view," explains a camper at High Point State Park.

    What campers like

Secluded forest sites: Many campgrounds offer wooded sites that provide privacy. At Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, "The campground is small but also secluded. We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," reports one regular visitor.

Modern facilities: Despite the rustic settings, many campgrounds maintain clean, well-equipped facilities. One Great Divide Campground visitor notes, "Bathrooms clean and shower was warm and clean as well. They even have a heater to keep you comfortable in and out of the shower."

Wildlife viewing: The region offers opportunities to spot native wildlife. At Swartswood State Park, one camper had an exciting encounter: "Three black bears strolled by the campsite next to ours in the early morning — gave us more of an energy boost after a sleepless night than our coffee!"

    What you should know

Bear country precautions: Black bears inhabit these forests, requiring proper food storage. "Remember, this is bear country so proper food storage is a must. Bear lockers are not provided," notes a Stokes State Forest camper.

Reservation timing: Most popular sites fill quickly, especially during fall foliage season. At High Point State Park Campground, advance planning is crucial during peak periods.

Yurt camping Oak Ridge, New Jersey options: Yurt accommodations provide alternative shelter beyond traditional camping. Great Divide Campground offers yurt rentals as seen in visitor photos. "They also had covered wagons which I believe you can sleep in, but I did not pursue this option," mentioned one visitor describing the alternative accommodations.

    Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with organized activities: Several sites offer structured programming for children. A Pleasant Acres visitor notes, "Lots of seasonals and lots of cabins, many RV sites I think all with full hookups. There were some organized activities which was nice."
