Trees, Lake Access, Biking, Hunting, Fishing, and Bow Range

This campground is close to home for us, but we love it as a quick get away.  It has beautiful, tree-covered campsites that offer direct access to the lake.  The sites and facilities are well kept and clean.  Full-hookup sites don't have any tree coverage, but the electric/water sites near the lake…

Nice

Easy access, many spots, bathroom that locks, with shower. A loop of camping spots surrounded by trees. Nothing to complain about. People were friendly.

  • Trail that surrounds the lake. (watch out for spiders!)

Peaceful and clean

We stayed 5/4-6/21. Had a great time watching the geese. We don't fish but others looked like they were having some success. No electricity or water. Clean latrines. Close to town. Found a dump station in town. Close to Tallgrass Nature Preserve. Beautiful falls at the east end of the dam. Love…

Beautiful view from less used sites.

I started the weekend off with a work camp trip here. We were in the larger camper site. They were very nice and accommodating! After everyone left I moved to a few non shore power site down by the water. Beautiful view, with a quiet serene feel.

Family camping

Can definitely get busy but good for family camping. Playground is in the middle and there's a great dock and beach. Views of the lake are fantastic. Just not the best spot if you're wanting peace, quiet, solitude, etc. Nice place though and this was during COVID....

Clean, neighborly & refurbished

This park has undergone some improvements with Prairie Clover Camping Loop {#1} showers and bathrooms clean and newly painted; dump sites and lagoons redone. Electrical sites sold out weekends so mid week may be your best bet. Patsy welcomed us at the gate and was the camp host. Part-time Employee…

Primitive camping was small and exposed, but fun

The fivestar loop is decent for tent camping. The sites were fairly small and jammed next to each other, and half of them didn't have great tree cover, but they all have a nice firepit and picnic table.  It was super duper windy off of the lake for us, so be ready for wind.  Bathrooms were nice and…

Everything you need is here

This was one of our favorite Kansas State Parks. At the end of May, it was almost empty. We had our pick of sites. We got a prime tree shaded spot on the water. In fairness, most sites are on the water or have a water view. Spectacular sunsets.

There was only 1 small bath house open while we…

Such a fun time!

This was our first location as full time RVers and it was such a fun experience. There are kayaks and canoes to rent, there is a great marina, fishing, and tons of water access opportunities for private kayaks. The people are friendly and so fun! Truly a great place to come camp.

Cons: showers…

Easy Camping

Campgrounds are clean and aren’t too overly cramped. Trails for hiking and riding bikes and they offer canoe/kayak renting.

Solid large state park, great hikes

Staying 2 weeks and couldn't have been more pleased! Website is little to no help unless visiting in peak season, but the camp hosts and park rangers are the tops. Visiting in non peak is as easy as driving in, finding a spot and paying your fees. Full bath houses, disc golf, archery range, a d an…

Favorite campground and fishing area

The outlet area below Melvern Reservoir has been our favorite camp site for over 35 years.   Full service campground, laundromat at each shower house, plenty of shade, and lots of fishing.  My husband is known as Fred the Fisherman.  The only problem is that it's very hard to get reservations, as…

Loved it!

I slept here on my way from Denver to Washington DC in February 2021. I have a mini camper in my CRV, I pulled up at midnight, went to a spot right by the shore and saw some incredible stars. Free and easy, and a nice change from all the flat dry Kansas fields.
