RV parks near Overland Park, Kansas provide convenient access to Kansas City attractions while offering varying levels of amenities for travelers. Located in the eastern part of Kansas at an elevation of approximately 1,086 feet, the area experiences hot summers with average July highs around 89°F and cold winters with January lows averaging 20°F. Camping options span from full-service RV parks with concrete pads to more rustic experiences within driving distance.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: 5 small lakes at Basswood Country RV Resort provide fishing without a license. Campers can enjoy catching fish throughout their stay. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," notes Shannon G.
Hiking and bike trails: Multiple parks offer paths for walking or cycling during your stay. Walkable distances to attractions make this area convenient for active campers. "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers," mentions Wendy T. about Campus RV Park.
Theme parks: Visit Worlds of Fun Village for easy access to both amusement and water parks. Located adjacent to the parks, staying here provides discounted tickets. "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two," explains John L.
What campers like
Campground pools: Many local parks feature swimming facilities for cooling off in summer heat. The zero-entry pool at Lake Paradise Resort provides options for all ages. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," reports Julie B.
Concrete pads at Worlds of Fun Village: Level sites with full hookups make setup easy. "Pads were concrete, level, clean, and well-maintained. Easy walk to Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, with some back-in sites offering tremendous views of downtown KC," says Scott C.
Camp stores: On-site shopping provides camping essentials and local specialties. At Country Gardens RV Park, campers appreciate the market offerings. "The cheese shop is very well appointed and included some lovely local wines which was a life saver as it was too hot to cook. Wine is a major food group, right?" mentions Donna H.
What you should know
Site spacing varies significantly between parks and sections: Premium sites typically offer more room than standard options. "The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section," notes one reviewer about area parks.
Neighborhood settings: Several parks are located within suburban areas rather than natural settings. Campus RV Park provides urban camping with tradeoffs. "Independence has some cool stuff to check out and has a very midwestern, small-town feel to it, even though it is basically a suburb of the greater Kansas City area. There is a lot of charm and some interesting architecture in the immediate area," explains Shari G.
Noise considerations: Highway and airport proximity can create background noise at several parks. "Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic," reports Kris M. about Trailside RV Park. At Basswood Country RV Resort, "the campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm."
Tips for camping with families
Themed weekends: Look for parks with scheduled activities for children. Basswood Country RV Resort offers regular programming. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," shares Tori G.
Kid-friendly amenities: Check for playgrounds, game rooms, and recreation areas. "The campground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," says Jennifer H. about Worlds of Fun Village.
Pet accommodations: Most parks allow pets, but facilities vary. "They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups," explains Shannon G. about one local park. Another reviewer notes, "There is a nice little dog park on the north end" at a different location.
Tips from RVers
Premium pull-through sites: Worth the extra cost for easier access and more space. At Lake Paradise Resort, site selection makes a difference. "We had a nice full hookup RV site with a very woodsy feel. Well shaded, grass and trees, view of water and nice space around us. Gravel site with picnic table and fire ring," notes Julie B.
Seasonal considerations: Check operating dates when planning. While some parks remain open year-round, others close seasonally. "We stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad," mentions Deb M.
Utility reliability: Most parks offer reliable hookups, but Wi-Fi quality varies significantly. "Everything worked great, the spot was on a slight hill- but wasn't terrible to level out," shares Mary about Walnut Grove RV Park. Another camper notes, "We stayed in the site right by the office and facilities. Good hookups that worked and WiFi worked very well."
