Nice campground with a group

We recently took our scout troop to Woodridge and had ample space for the group.  The 4.5 mile trail was a nice activity for the scouts during the morning.  The trail was moderately difficult and could be problematic if raining.  The vault toilet was pretty clean and well taken care of.  It was fairly busy between the car campers and those who utilized one of the many hike in sites.  Several of the hike in sites looked promising and I hope to one day return and use one as well.

Fine for a night, not longer

It was pretty crowded and most car camping sites were taken when we got in at 8pm on a Wednesday in may. Some folks appeared to be staying long-term and had left their dogs completely unattended with only one tied up so they were just wandering the campground.

We left after a night because cell service wasn’t very good (1 bar on Verizon/at and t/t mobile) and the loose dog repeatedly wandering into our campsite was upsetting our dog. Sites down the trail for tents seemed okay.

Highly Recommended

Beautiful free camping. There’s a gravel loop with some picnic tables and a couple hike-in sites dispersed along a trail. I was here over Labor Day weekend and didn’t see a single other person on the the 1/2-ish mile hike to Primitive Site 4, where I spent the night. Site 4 is right on the lake and had a beautiful view of the sunrise. The main loop/parking area had some pit toilets that are very basic but honestly no worse than what I’ve seen at some paid campsites. Highly highly recommend.

Awesome (free!) sites & trail

Best campsite we’ve been to since moving to KS 7 years ago—wooded, private, spacious, feels very secluded. It our first time hiking in to a site (lots of work with our regular gear for a family of four, but worth it!). We went mid-June, and there had apparently been some type of butterfly hatching. They were small but quite aggressive (who knew!?), constantly swarming us. At one point there were seven perched on my husband’s back, and one landed in a pancake cooking on the grill (no surviving that). We still had fun, but we’ll go earlier or later next time. We also love hiking the trail through the woods and by the lake even when we aren’t camping—best trail I’ve been on in Lawrence.

Favorite camp ground

This is my little families favorite camp ground. We very rarely run into anyone else while camping on the trail. We have myself, husband, son, and dog. Every now and then there will be a rowdy group of guys out there to party but for the most part it’s pretty quiet. Only downside is I wish people would clean up better after themselves.

Great Primitive Camp Area

Awesome spot for weekend camping. Lots of fire rings available. Well maintained in the main camping area, as well as on the trail.

Great!

We brought our two dogs here with us and camped. There are so many spots you can set up at on the trail that nobody went to. Keep in mind though that the trail gets very muddy if it has just rained! We had a great experience here right up until the last morning when a hobo that was sleeping in his tent there decided to knock on our tent at 6 am wondering if we stole his wet wood from outside his tent. And YES he indeed was homeless because he told us himself and then shortly after that said he was drunk as well. We got up and started packing to leave as we were talking to him because we felt we were in danger. Told the man to leave several times and he didn’t even want to step away from our site. Over all was a good place but just anywhere you go keep an eye on others around you and definitely bring protection, people are CRAZY!

Home away from home

This place is definitely a weekend destination for my little family and I. The trail is probably easy to moderate and there are an endless number of areas to explore. There are several campsites in the parking lot area and then there are 15 more primitive sites along the trail. It's highly suggested that you explore off the trail though so that you can 1) see all the creative campsites that campers have built and established and 2) you can create your own living space. Woodridge is never over crowded unless it's a holiday, so more often than not you could camp the whole weekend and potentially not see another person. I highly recommend you to take a little vacation at this park and enjoy what nature has to offer!
