The Mount Rushmore State is home to seven National Park Service sites that range from jewel-encrusted caves to ancient fossil beds. Black Hills National Forest in the western side of the state covers an additional 1.2 million acres that spill over the border into Wyoming and hold the highest peak east of the Rockies. At about 71,000 acres, nearby Custer State Park is one of the largest state parks in the country and home to an annual buffalo roundup that offers a true taste of the American West. Travelers looking to lounge lakeside will be pleased with the many camping options available near the region’s 17 lakes. With stunning rock formations reaching out from the water, Sylvan Lake is one of the area’s most iconic places to take a dip and do some South Dakota camping. Nearby, Horsethief Lake is tucked into the surrounding ponderosa pines, yet only two miles away from the ultimate road trip stop, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Those looking to pick up some speed can head north to Pactola Lake for a day of water skiing and a night of s’mores.


Prefer solitude? Strap on your backpack and hike the state’s 111-mile Centennial Trail, which provides a north to south taste of the Black Hills through prairie grasslands, dense forests, and high country terrain. Check with the different land management agencies along the way for specifics on where backcountry camping is allowed or where to find established campgrounds. Rather bike? The 109-mile George S. Mickelson Trail runs parallel to the Centennial Trail and is a rails-to-trails, car-free dream.


South Dakota camping is for everyone, and whether you’re exploring by foot or by RV, you’ll be able to find the perfect place to rest your head. Private and public campgrounds near the town of Custer offer RV hookups, and are a quick drive to Crazy Horse Memorial, the world’s largest in-progress mountain carving. Begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Oglala Lakota Chief, Henry Standing Bear, this memorial is more than a work of art. It is a mission to preserve and honor the culture and tradition of Native Americans. 


After camping on the island in the prairie, make sure to head east and watch the landscape roll into waves of grasslands before crashing into Badlands National Park. Head east farther still, and you’ll meet up with the mighty Missouri River. Stocked with towels, linens and even cookware for the kitchen, each cabin also has a full bathroom. We have what you are looking for.  Perhaps, a wedding destination, family reunion, small company retreat or a destination for relaxing while enjoying our mountain streams and quiet peaceful settings under our 80 foot spruce trees.
It is here you can also come for hunting, ATV riding, rock climbing above and below us, mountain biking, fishing, riding the Mickelson Trail, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse or historic Lead Deadwood to name some of our Black Hills offerings.

We are located central to the Northern Black Hills at the top of Spearfish Canyon 10 minutes west of Lead Deadwood on Highway 85.  Wickiup has the monopoly on Spearfish Creek.  Long gone are the cabin camps that once provided memories for children to older folks never to be forgotten.  Warm summer days of tubing, fishing, panning for those gold flakes or just skipping rocks.

Big Rig RV Park Campground is one of the oldest campgrounds for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Big Rig RV Park Campground is located in Sturgis, South Dakota and we are open exclusively for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The campground is perched on top of a hill and has spectacular views the Sturgis and the Black Hills area. We are just two miles from the legendary Sturgis Main Street with very easy access to I-90, Boulder Canyon, Vanocker Canyon, and other Black Hills attractions.

We have a variety of lot campsites especially lots with spectacular views of the beautiful Black Hills. Our campsites feature full service hook-ups including water, sewer, 30/50 amp electricity, and WIFI that actually works. Our campsites have a gravel surface and are nearly perfectly level with little or no blocking required. We have two campgrounds, the original North site launched in 2000, and the South site constructed in 2015. Both sites include a very clean men’s and women’s shower-house.

The official dates for the 2023 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are Friday, August 4th thru Sunday, August 13th, 2023. However, many of our guests arrive early or come in later in order to avoid the crowds. We are open from Friday, July 28th thru Sunday, August 13th. We have 8 different schedules to accommodate your travel plans. Please come stay with us to enjoy the 2023 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

This is an owned lot that is available for rent on a limited basis for small campers and RV's. This lot is perfect for a safe place to overnight park. Pets welcome but must be on leash and cleaned up after. This lot is on a gravel packed road, directly off the highway. You do have to back up, so smaller rigs are a better fit. Total of 7 people welcome with each reservation. Class C RV's that are the size of a grey hound bus not going to work due to having to back into lot and maneuvering. If you have a large 5th wheel this may not be the lot for you If you do not have good backing skills. 50/30/20 Amp service. No Water. No Sewer. You will be on your own and being quiet is a must. No trailers with ATV's. One RV or camper is allowed per reservation.

The minimum age to Camp at Rushmore Shadows is 25 years old.

Roubaix Lake is a small lake located northwest of Rapid City and South of Deadwood, just west of US Highway 385. The lake provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and ice skating. Roubaix Lake Campground is open year-round.

Setting up your own campsite away from developed fee sites, also known as dispersed camping, is allowed on most of the Forest for a maximum of 14 days in any 60-day period. However, around developed reservoirs and campgrounds, camping is allowed only in designated areas. Check with the closest Forest Service office for specific information.

General rules:

Camp 100 feet away from any creek or stream and 1/2 mile away from developed recreation sites, including campgrounds and picnic areas.
Motorized vehicles allowed 300 feet off of roads as shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map (dots) for dispersed camping on the Black Hills National Forest. 
Around developed reservoirs and campgrounds, camping is allowed only in designated campsites.
Can camp for a maximum of 14 days in any 60-day period. 
No open campfires in South Dakota portions of the national forest.
Open campfires are permitted in Wyoming portions of the national forest, unless a special order prohibiting such is in effect.
