Black Fox Campground

Black Fox Campground, near the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota, is a cozy spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. With a handful of sites tucked away along a peaceful creek, it’s perfect for campers who appreciate a bit of solitude and nature.

This campground is all about simplicity. Visitors have noted the clean vault toilet and the absence of modern distractions like showers or electric hookups, which means you’ll need to pack out your trash and bring your own water. As one camper put it, “Remote for the Black Hills,” but that’s part of its charm. The sound of the bubbling creek adds a soothing backdrop to your stay, and if you’re into fishing, you might just catch some rainbow trout right from your campsite.

Some campers have mentioned the nearby wildlife, including elk and deer, making it a great spot for nature lovers.

While the sites can be a bit small and unlevel, the overall vibe is relaxed and friendly. If you’re looking for a quiet retreat where you can unwind and connect with nature, Black Fox Campground is a solid choice.

Rustic and remote

Remote for the Black Hills. No water, no trash, no cell service. Please pack out your trash; unfortunately, someone thought aluminum cans would burn. Creek right behind my campsite. Had decent shade. Toilet was clean. They have been thinning trees, so a little bit of firewood is on the ground. Mostly dusty gravel road from US385.

Deep in the Nat. Forest

This site is beautiful. Lovely streams flow around the camp. 9 spots that are a little small and a little unlevel. Vault toilet, no faucets. Asked the host who said just to boil the stream water for fresh water. 10 - 20 miles from a paved road so be ready for that. Lots of OHVs driving around. Despite all that I really enjoyed our stay there.

Close enough to town and yet remote camping

The drive to Black Fox is along quite a few ranches and follows a river. The drive is enjoyable and not very difficult to handle. The campground is right along the river. The rapids made music that is peaceful and inviting.

A large group of ATVs drove in to picnic. Along with one other family, the campground was pretty empty.

What better camp than right along a bubbling river? Off road trails are the closest draw. The Michelson trail has an access point a few miles down the road. Pay the access fee and enjoy the trail with hikers, bikers, and horses.

Although some of the sites had a bit too much water and were muddy, the bulk of the 9 sites were perfect.

Quaint and Cozy Campground!

Nestled up in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, Black Fox is our 'go to' campground because of how small it is. 8-10 sites that are spread out so you're not right beside other campers. Black Fox has 1 vaulted toilet and every camp site has its own fire pit and picnic table. There is a small creek that runs right behind many of the camp sites so if you feel like doing a little rainbow trout fishing, you can. If your not into fishing, just hop on to your ATV and go explore the many trails that are situated right around the campground. Not only will you be able to enjoy nature, but you will see elk, deer, turkey and if your lucky, a mountain lion!
