Great place to stop for the night.

There are lots of places to chose from we didn't even go back as far as the app Said. The roads a little rough for bike but any 4 wheel vehicle even 2wd would be fine. Didn't get chance to go look around but what I did see was nice.

Surrounded by private property

There are one or two spots on this road good for camping — it’s surrounded by private property & what looks like newly-developed neighborhoods going up so i’m not sure how long this location will be available to be camped at. Easy spot to get to, as it’s on pretty packed down dirt roads

Quiet location close to Spearfish.

As you go up Tinton Rd on the left hand side within 1/4 mile prior to Aspen Hills turnoff there is a parking lot area with a hiking trailhead and another area further up with a porta potty. Once on Aspen Hills rd there is another spot on the right hand side before reaching this spot on the left hand side. Although, the spot is located close to the road there is very little traffic. The area is beautiful and serene. I observed deer at the first spot on Aspen Hills. Great spot to set up camp and explore the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find free dispersed camping near Spearfish, South Dakota?

Several free dispersed camping opportunities exist near Spearfish, SD. One popular location is along Tinton Road, which has multiple spots including a parking lot area with a hiking trailhead within a quarter mile of the Aspen Hills turnoff. Another area further up Tinton Road offers a porta potty. Additional camping spots can be found after turning onto Aspen Hills Road, with some sites on the right side. While these areas provide a great sense of seclusion, be aware that some spots are surrounded by private property and developing neighborhoods, which may affect availability in the future.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping around Spearfish, SD?

Dispersed camping near Spearfish follows standard Black Hills National Forest regulations. There are no clearly marked campsites in many areas - you'll need to find a suitable spot to set up camp. Be mindful that many areas are bordered by private property, so stay on public land and respect property boundaries. Always practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and waste. Camping is generally limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. For the most current regulations, check with the Northern Hills Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest.

Is a 4WD vehicle required to access dispersed camping sites near Spearfish?

A 4WD vehicle is not absolutely necessary for most dispersed camping areas near Spearfish. The roads to popular sites, like those off Tinton Road and Aspen Hills Road, are typically packed dirt that can accommodate 2WD vehicles. While the terrain might be a bit rough in spots, most passenger cars with decent clearance can navigate these roads in dry conditions. However, weather can significantly impact accessibility, so 4WD might be beneficial during wet periods or early spring when roads might be muddy.
