Locust Lake State Park Campground features multiple pet-friendly camping options in the Barnesville area, with forested sites ranging from walk-in tent sites to electric hookup spots that accommodate RVs. The campground enforces standard leash regulations while offering scenic lakefront sites where dogs can enjoy the natural surroundings without being allowed directly on the beach areas. Twin Grove RV Resort, Knoebels Campground, and Camp A While also welcome pets with varying amenities including full hookup sites, cabins, and glamping options. Several campers noted that while dogs aren't permitted on the swimming beach at Locust Lake, the paved walking path circling the entire lake provides an excellent opportunity for exercising dogs during the camping stay. Campers browse The Dyrt when exploring the best sites near Llewellyn, Pennsylvania.
The creek running through Camp A While creates a natural boundary between tent and RV camping sections, offering pets pleasant streamside walking opportunities despite the nearby highway noise mentioned in multiple reviews. Hiking trails at Locust Lake State Park and neighboring Tuscarora State Park provide approximately 20 miles of dog-friendly walking paths through diverse terrain including pine forests, oak woodlands, and alongside mountain lakes. Dog owners bringing tents should note that many Locust Lake sites sit on uneven, sloped terrain with rocky or rooty surfaces that can become extremely muddy after rainfall. Sites in the 180s along Locust Creek have experienced severe flooding even days after rain events, making higher elevation sites preferable for camping with pets during wet weather seasons. Abundant chipmunks throughout the campground may attempt to steal food, requiring secure storage of pet supplies.
"Knoebels campground is situated next to Knoebels amusement park and offers sites for tent campers and RVs, as well as cabins. There is electricity at every site but not water."
"You can walk to their amusement park from the grounds as well as their giant pool with waterslides and diving boards."
from $59 - $160 / night
"Not to much to do in the area but it is somewhat close to the Appalachian Trail if you’re into that. It seems like the camp ground always has something fun going on."
"The only reason for not giving five stars is because it’s very close to a freeway. There’s quite a bit of truck and car noise from the freeway."

"According to hikers on the AT, this is what they call Pennsylvania, as they hike through this section of the state. And Blue Rocks Campground doesn't dissapoint."
"Blue Rocks family campground is close to I78 however it is still off the beaten path. It is very peaceful to camp here as you have different types of environments."
"Grounds, bathrooms, showers, playgrounds, dog park, everything. This park is wonderful!"
"Nice dog park."
"This campground is only minutes away from Knobels Amusement Park. The campground itself was clean but not a lot of amenities being it’s part of the amusement park."
"It’s a nice spacious campground next to the park."
from $50 - $80 / night
"There are gardens with walkways to walk to the pool or the office. Our site 24B was a pull through with full hook up. We had cable and WI-FI. There wasn't any shade yet were only here one night."
"Check in is as 3pm, we showed up at 2:45 after a 7 hr drive and they made us pay $15 extra. Sites were average. Caught some cat fish in the pond. The pool wasn't bad, and bingo was fun."
"We started our trip Friday afternoon, we pulled into the campground and they had a table set up outside to “check in.” We did not wait in a mile long line to park and go into the office."
"Super dog friendly. Many little dog parks throughout. Great pool."
"There is a pond to fish from, a dog park for your furry friend to play at and a few playgrounds for the kids."
"Hoping for a dog park in the future."
"They are in the process of adding lots more sites up away from the lake in the woods plus 2 bath houses. The sites along the lake are great, but be aware most of them are seasonal."
from $65 - $96 / night
"Close to other stores and camping center."
"Large size pool for the bigger folks and a walk in pool for the toddlers. Fun activities for all to enjoy. All the campers that were there when we there are super friendly."

This is a large campground with a wide array of campsites so be careful attention when you book online, especially if you have a pet because some sites are not pet-friendly. Some are 50-amp full hook-up and some are primitive with no hook-ups.
There is a nice nature center with interesting interpretive exhibits and lots of informational brochures including ones about the hiking trails, bears, scat and tracks of local animals, and fishing. Our site was at the edge of the campground and backed up to Route 534 which resulted in a bit of road noise at our site. Other than the road noise the campground was pretty quiet and was not very crowded when we camped there in October.
Not all sites are level and we happened to book one that was not and we had to live with a slant for our stay. The roads in the park are gravel/dirt and since it rained the day we arrived the roads were a muddy mess which made the roads slippery and there were lots of potholes. Unfortunately, some campers were disrespectful and left bags of trash in the fire pit and scattered around their site which was totally unnecessary because there were dumpsters plenty of dumpsters in the campground. Since we camped at Hickory Run late in the season, there were no camp hosts and the trash never got picked up.
The campground is open from mid-April to mid-December; however, the shower facilities and dump station are not available after the third week of October so plan accordingly. We really like the hiking trails which are of varying degrees of difficulty and lengths. The Hawk Falls is a nice easy walk (1.4 miles round-trip) to a waterfall but is extremely popular so don’t think you will be admiring the falls alone. The parking lot at this trail head fills up fast so you better get there early if you want to get a spot.
You can enter the park from two different directions. If you have a big-rig, it is best to approach from the east side. We made the mistake of coming in from the west side as we dropped down from I-80 and came down 534 and the road was really windy with no shoulder. Luckily, there was very little traffic so we could go 10 mph and safely navigate the roads.
Be aware alcohol is not allowed in PA state parks. This park does allow hunting in certain sections of the park. The no-hunting areas are clearly marked with white no hunting signs on trees and you can also pick up a brochure from the office that designates hunting and no-hunting sections.
Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!
This is a hidden gem, as close to dispersed camping you can get with dirt, gravel roads, large stone fire pits, a amazing views with the added benefit of a five gallon jug of non potable water and very clean port-a-potties. The owner regularly patrols the site and makes sure everything is okay.
What a great campground! We stayed here on a recommendation from a friend after the Overland Expo. Great hiking trails and the falls were absolutely breathtaking. Truly enjoyed our stay and plan to return!
solid parking place for vans and RVs. road is dirt gravel but not terrible. nice hike nearby
i mean meh with the most enthusiasm as you can live your entire life & be oki not going here. the trails are small & the overlook is fenced high for falls. it’s about as much scenery as going for a walk deer hunting. it’s beginner friendly if anyone wants to start getting into parks but i feel there’s more focus on pavilions & playgrounds than calling it a state park. for anything boating or canoeing on the river it’s a good place to be but your in town so it take it for what it is
The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.
Small campground with rude owner. Everything I asked about was putting her out. It was cheap though at $36 for water and electric with a military discount.
Campgrounds near Llewellyn, Pennsylvania offer diverse camping experiences within Pennsylvania's coal region at elevations ranging from 800-1,500 feet. The area experiences distinct seasonal temperature variations with summer highs averaging 82-85°F and winter lows frequently dropping below freezing. Fall camping attracts visitors seeking colorful foliage displays throughout the region's mixed hardwood forests.
Explore fall foliage trails: During autumn months, the hiking paths at Blue Rocks Family Campground provide exceptional seasonal color displays. "PA is beautiful in the fall. Nice campground with some trails and access to Pottsville - for the best brewery tour ever - Yeungling! Check out the Jim Thorpe fall fest and Hershey Park," notes Melanie Z. from Locust Lake.
Fish local waterways: The small lakes and ponds throughout the region support various fish species. At Lake Glory Campground, visitors enjoy stocked waters with active fish. "The lake is stocked and the fish are always hungry. 10 minutes to Knoebels with the mighty Phoenix," mentions Vince L.
Kayaking opportunities: Several water bodies permit non-motorized boating. "I went there with my son and a friend. We did some kayaking and fishing, it was good! The park rangers were very nice and the store had helpful workers," shares Paul J. about his experience at Locust Lake.
Boulder field exploration: The region's unique geological features provide interesting terrain for outdoor enthusiasts. "Our children loved to climb all over the rocks, that is where they spent most of the time. Primitive but fun!" reports Terri S. from her stay at Blue Rocks.
Private wooded sites: Camp A While offers natural surroundings with water features. "The campground is beautifully laid out with a stream running between the tent and RV camping. There is a pool and rec room that looks fun for all ages," observes Jen in her review.
Clean shower facilities: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Llewellyn maintain quality bathroom amenities. At Twin Grove RV Resort, "Spotless. Plenty of room for whatever size tent or RV you have. Always lots of activities... 2 very clean pools and water slides. 2 nice dog parks," according to Mike J.
Organized activities: Scheduled events enhance the camping experience at several locations. "The campground had numerous activities set up all throughout the day and there was something for everyone. I find that a lot of campground activities tend to be centered around small children and with my kids being 13 and 12, they're usually left out of the fun. There was bingo, crafts, a vendor craft show, hot dog eating contest for adults and kids, candy scramble in the dark for adults and kids," shares Melissa Y. about Appalachian Camping Resort.
Access to hiking trails: The region provides numerous outdoor path options. "Lovely camp site with access to a lot of amenities, all the while keeping a 'primative' feel. Pool, playground, camp store, bike and golf cart rentals. Super easy access to Appalachian trail. Trail heads begin inside the campsite," explains Amy C. regarding Blue Rocks.
Road noise considerations: Some pet-friendly camping options have highway proximity issues. "The only reason for not giving five stars is because it's very close to a freeway. There's quite a bit of truck and car noise from the freeway. Between the cars rushing by, the sound of the stream is peaceful and serene," notes Jen about Camp A While.
Weather preparedness: Temperature fluctuations require appropriate gear. "We went in late august and although it was pool weather during the day time the temperatures dropped somewhat dramatically into the evening hours so bring clothes for both 70-80 degree weather and 40-50 degree weather overnight," advises Derek W. about Knoebels Campground.
Cellular connectivity limitations: Be prepared for communication challenges. "If you want to be disconnected, literally because there is no cell service, then this is the place for you," states Jen R. about Tuscarora State Park, while Zoltan P. adds, "No cell service at all unless you drive up to the top of the mountain."
Site conditions vary: Terrain at many campgrounds presents challenges. "Sites were a little small and rocky / rooty, but we made it work," mentions Joe F. from his experience at Locust Lake.
Amusement park accessibility: Jonestown/Hershey KOA provides convenient entertainment options. "We were able to purchase Hershey Park tickets which were cheaper than buying from the Hershey (at a discount) and it includes shuttle service to and from the park! The staff were friendly and welcoming and it was an overall wonderful experience," shares Marlaina M.
Water recreation variety: Multiple water features keep children engaged. "We had lake front access to put kayaks in and fish which was awesome. Great walking path around lake for kids to ride bikes to parks or beach. Beach area was nice," explains Dawn R. about her family experience.
Playground facilities: Many campgrounds offer play areas for different age groups. "There is a pool, playground, camp store, bike and golf cart rentals," notes Amy C., while another review mentions "nice playground for kids."
Evening entertainment options: Beyond daytime activities, some locations provide nighttime fun. "Nice arcade and mini golf in an area set off to the side with a ferris wheel, merry go round, and other small kiddie rides. Usually have a band on Saturday evenings," reports Mike J. about Twin Grove.
Hookup availability: Electrical connections vary across locations. "Great place. No water hook up. No sewer hook up. Just electric at certain sites. Convenient paved walking path all around the lake, swimming lake with beach, nice playground for kids," explains Brandon W. about his Locust Lake stay.
Site leveling challenges: Be prepared for terrain issues at several campgrounds. "It was a hill and no matter how many times we adjusted, we just could not get leveled," notes Melissa Y. from her experience, while Joe F. mentions sites being "rocky / rooty" at another location.
Advance booking requirements: Popular pet-friendly sites fill quickly. "Book early as they sell out fast!" advises Joshua W. about Knoebels Campground, while other reviewers emphasize making reservations well in advance for prime weekends.
Site selection strategy: Research specific site features before booking. "The site we got was full hook up. It was a nice size and was in a good location - near the ponds, pool, office, and bathhouse - but was still quiet!" explains Becca U. about her experience at Appalachian Camping Resort.
