From the vast Chihuahuan Desert to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico has a wealth of opportunities to get outside and explore. For outdoor adventurers, there’s skiing in Taos, whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande, and plenty of hiking, from the Southern Rockies to dusty desert canyons. That’s what makes camping in New Mexico such a varied and fulfilling experience.


Carlsbad Caverns provides ample opportunities to hike, explore, learn about desert wildlife, even appreciate a few thousand Mexican free-tail bats take flight. They swarm out of the cave every night at dust for an audience that often numbers in the hundreds. It’s a perfect excuse to stick around the park after dark and do some camping in New Mexico.


Of course, the only camping available within Carlsbad Caverns National Park is backcountry camping, so come prepared to Leave No Trace. Keep in mind that the desert landscape is often dry, so fire bans, even some backcountry cooking bans, are frequently in effect in the drier months. On the upside, backcountry camping permits are free and you can grab one at the visitor center when you arrive.


Visit White Sands National Monument for an unmatched, natural experience. Acres upon acres of white gypsum dunes stretch into the distance, offering hours of diversion, be it hiking across the dunes or sledding down them. If you forgot your sled, don’t worry, you can pick one up in the gift shop. Just be sure to enjoy these activities early in the morning or late in the evening during the summer months; it gets hot in the desert during midday!


As for camping in White Sands, it’s backcountry camping or nothing and sites require a short hike through the dunes. You’ll be camping on the gypsum, surrounded by shifting white hills, dark night skies up above, and no other campers in sight. It’s definitely a unique experience. Permits are $3.00 per person and can be picked up at the visitor center.

Manzano Mountain Retreat is a unique Mountain property set in the foothills of the Manzanos just an hour outside of Albuquerque. We have 16 cabins on 178 Acres with nearly 100 of that available for tent camping. There are four, 30 and 50 amp RV pedestals outside our east orchard near the gymnasium and pool. The area is flat and open, making parking a camper or RV relatively easy. We also have a water spigot that is not too far away so tanks can be filled upon request.

Also onsite is a mercantile store for snacks, drinks, and toiletries along with a restaurant that is open for our overnight guests with advance reservations.

With 40 Acres of Apple Orchard and a pond, the property offers serenity in a way you may never expect just outside Albuquerque.

The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Site 1 "The edge" is great for RV's and tall setups as well as tents and cars. The hill going to the site is short, approx. 0.2 ml. Its dirt and rock and a little steep but everything from bikes, motorcycles, sedans and buses can easily navagate without bottoming out, just take it slow. It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and a nice outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existance to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coalmining industries, to ghost towns.



Mesa Top Camping

Welcome to The Sherwood Escape, located in Sherwood Forest a residential subdivision created in the 1970's and nestled in the foot hills of the breath taking Manzano Mountains. This property boasts privacy as it is in a private subdivision where only land owners are allowed. This particular parcel is 1.36 acres in size. In 2008 the Trigo fire affected the parcel, but since then it has bloomed back beautifully with gamble oak tress and some juniper as well. The entrance of the subdivision is adjacent to the impeccably beautiful, scenic and notorious 4th of July Trail which is great for UTV's and dirt bikes as well as being in short distance of multiple trail heads. At the bottom of the road is the land grant of Torreon, and a few miles in each direction are more land grants and historic Spanish settlements, those being Tajique, Manzano, and Punta de auga. Highway 55 in which these settlements lay is also known as the Scenic Byway for the Salt Mission Trail. Multiple Ruins from the Spanish Salinas Pueblo Missions are within 10-20 mins from the campsite depending on which one is visited. There is Quarai located in Punta de Augua which is about 10 mins from the property, keep going another 10 mins into the also historic town of Mountainair which has a local market, Dollar General, dining locations and other things to see including the historic and haunted Shaffer Hotel. Mountainair is located where Highway 55 and 60 meet, and just a few minutes down highway 60 you will find the next ruin, Abo. Come and camp or bring your r/v to this vacant lot and enjoy what the Manzano Mountains have to offer.

The RavenHouse RV spot and Horse Hotel offers a unique locale to pull up to your own deck and relax. The Cerrillos Hills State Park is across the road and the historic towns of Cerrillos and Madrid, NM are nearby to explore. Great view of the Ortiz Mountain Range and friendly chickens nearby. Horseback riding is permitted in the park and we have a horse corral with a small covered area for your horses.

A cactus garden oasis at the foot of the Cerrillos Hills and along the San Marcos arroyo, RavenHouse sits among history and beauty. The property offers you a game of horseshoes, a covered picnic area with a propane grill, an outdoor bathhouse with a fully plumbed bathroom and outdoor shower, and a deck for your vehicle to pull up to or your tent to sit on.
