One of the least populated states in America, Idaho is the third state that makes up the Pacific Northwest—besides Oregon and Washington. Fishermen are drawn to the state’s abundant and exceptional fish species. It’s the West’s only inland state where you can catch blue-ribbon trout as well as king salmon and steelhead. Mountain bikers, rock climbers, and boaters find delight camping in Idaho’s wildernesses.


Hiking and camping in Idaho is, however, arguably the state’s most popular outdoor pursuit. And it’s available all across the state. A particularly great destination is the Boise National Forest, the location of the awesome Red Mountain Trail. Other fantastic places to go backpacking and camping in Idaho include Craters of the Moon National Monument, the remarkable Bruneau Dunes State Park and iconic Yellowstone National Park, a sliver of which lies in the state’s southeastern corner.


In the middle of southern Idaho lies Shoshone Falls, a series of huge cascades on the Snake River sometimes referred to as the “Niagara of the West”. The Snake River meanders its way further west, making up the northern part of the Oregon and Idaho border, and flows through massive Hells Canyon. Ten miles wide and almost 8,000 feet deep, this is the deepest river canyon in North America, an absolutely natural gem to explore when camping in Idaho.

Trinity View Resort

## Overview

Black Rock Campground is located 20 miles from Idaho City, on the North Fork Boise River, at an elevation of 4,300 feet. Visitors enjoy fishing, swimming and exploring local trails.

## Recreation

The North Fork Boise River offers rainbow trout fishing in a beautiful natural setting. Many swimming holes can be found within a short distance of the campground.  
  
Numerous trail opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and dirt biking can be found in the vicinity. 

## Facilities

The campground contains several single-family campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Some sites also have grills. Vault toilets, and drinking water are provided within the campground. Roads and parking spurs are dirt. Garbage Collection is not provided.

## Natural Features

The campground sits on the banks of the North Fork Boise River, where ponderosa pines tower over the area. Most campsites have partial shade, but little privacy from other campers. A variety of wildlife makes its home around the campground.

Black Rock

Overview: A stay at Cottonwood Campground enables guests to enjoy all the beauty and recreation offered around the Middle Fork Boise River and Arrowrock Reservoir. The tiny campground hosts 3 campsites. Weather is usually good from mid-May through late September and is easily accessible by car in good weather, although the road is sometimes rough and the drive can be seemingly long. Checking with the Mountain Ranger District (208-587-7961) on road conditions before heading out is recommended. Natural Features: The campground is situated just north of the reservoir along Cottonwood Creek. There is at a switchback of Forest Service (FS) roads 268 and 377. It is located less than a mile along FS road 377. Wildlife watchers may want to look for deer and elk. Waterfowl, eagles and osprey are attracted to the river. Recreation: Cottonwood Trail begins nearby, leading to Bald Mountain. Check the Idaho City Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for trails in the area that are open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and off-road vehicles. Click here for an Idaho OHV safety message. Arrowrock Reservoir is a premier fishing destination in southwest Idaho. It offers excellent trout fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout. There are also good swimming holes. Big game hunting is a popular activity in season. The Middle Fork Boise River is just north of the campground and also offers great fishing.

Cottonwood Campground

## Overview

Hayfork Group Campground is located 49 miles northeast of Boise, Idaho, along scenic Highway 21. Historic Idaho City is just 12 miles south of the campground. Visitors enjoy fishing in Mores Creek and exploring local trails. 

## Recreation

Mores Creek runs between the highway and the campground, offering whitefish and rainbow trout fishing.  
  
Numerous trails are in the area, providing ample opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicle riding. In the winter, the area becomes a playground for back country skiers and snowmobiles.

## Facilities

The campground provides one large-group campsite for reservation. It can accommodate up to 50 people and is a great location for family reunions or small weddings. The site is equipped with multiple tables, a grill and a campfire circle with benches.  
  
Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Parking spurs are gravel. Due to the campground's proximity to the highway, some noise from passing traffic is to be expected.

## Natural Features

The campground is situated at the foot of a ponderosa pine-forested hillside along Highway 21, at an elevation of 5,100 feet. The campsite, however, is in an open area with limited shade. Wildlife and summer wildflowers are abundant in the surrounding area. 

## Nearby Attractions

Highway 21, also known as the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, snakes along Mores Creek to Mores Creek Summit, Gold Fork and Banner Ridge, offering historic sites, hot springs pools and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forest along the way.

Hayfork Group Campground

## Overview

Macks Creek Park is a small campground located on the Boise River Arm of Lucky Peak Lake, just 25 miles from the Boise area and 4 miles off the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway. Visitors make the trip to enjoy quality recreational activities like boating, swimming and fishing.

## Recreation

The lake offers family-friendly outdoor recreation opportunities for both travelers and residents of the urban Boise area. Macks Creek Park offers scenic views and convenient access to lake recreation.   
  
Anglers fish for rainbow trout, Kokanee and smallmouth bass. A boat ramp is located within the campground.

## Facilities

This primitive, small park offers a handful of campsites on the shore of Lucky Peak Lake. Clean vault restrooms, hand pumped drinking water and an emergency telephone are provided.   
  
During the recreation season, volunteer camp hosts live on-site and can provide information and assistance to park users.   
  
Parking availability is limited and there is no cell service at the lake. Two businesses within 10 miles offer limited food and services.

## Natural Features

Lucky Peak Lake is located in the foothills of southwestern Idaho on the Boise River at an elevation of 3,055 feet. When full, the lake stretches 12 miles up-river, with 45 miles of shoreline and over 3,000 surface acres of water.   
  
The campground is situated among shady trees along the lakeshore. The surrounding mountains are consistent with sagebrush steppe, dotted with sagebrush and bitterbrush.   
  
A variety of wildlife lives around Lucky Peak, including bald and golden eagles, mule deer, antelope, red-tailed hawks, California quail and chukar. 

## Nearby Attractions

Arrowrock Reservoir, operated by the Bureau of Reclamation, is nearby, as is the beautiful Boise National Forest. These areas provide additional camping, boating, fishing, hiking and sightseeing opportunities.

Macks Creek Park

## Overview

Grayback Campground is located 36 miles northeast of Boise, Idaho, just off scenic Highway 21. Historic Idaho City is just two miles north of the campground. Visitors enjoy fishing in Mores Creek and exploring the Grayback Gulch Trail. 

## Recreation

Mores Creek can be accessed just below the campground. Anglers fish for whitefish and rainbow trout. Grayback Loop Trail begins within the site, offering a 1-mile footpath for hikers.  
  
Numerous trail opportunities are in the area just north of Idaho City, where hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicles can be enjoyed. During the winter, the area becomes a playground for back country skiers and snowmobiles.

## Facilities

The campground contains two group sites with picnic and serving tables, grills, campfire circles and paved site pads. Site A can accommodate up to 150 people and 20 vehicles, and site B can accommodate up to 100 people and 15 vehicles. Both sites can be reserved at the same time, for even larger groups.   
  
Several single- and double-family campsites are available as well, each equipped with a picnic table, lantern post and campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided throughout the campground. A campground host is located directly across the road.

## Natural Features

The campground is situated on a hillside about a quarter-mile above Highway 21, at an elevation of 4,200 feet. A ponderosa pine forest covers the site, offering partial shade. Wildlife and summer wildflowers are abundant in the area.

Highway 21, also known as the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, snakes along Mores Creek to Mores Creek Summit, Gold Fork and Banner Ridge, offering historic sites, hot springs pools and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forest along the way to the campground.

Grayback

Overview: Willow Creek Campground is located along the Middle Fork of the Boise River Forest Service (FS) road 268 and the north end of the Arrowrock Reservior. There are 9 campsites at the campground. A stay at the campground enables guests to enjoy all the beauty and recreation offered along the river and reservoir. Weather is usually good from mid-May through late September and is easily accessible by car in good weather, although the road is sometimes rough and the drive can be seemingly long. Checking with the District on road conditions before heading out is recommended. Natural Features: Wildlife watchers may want to look for deer and elk. Waterfowl, eagles and osprey are attracted to the river. Recreation: There are several trails in the area including trail #189 beginning near Cottonwood Campground, leading to Bald Mountain Peak. Boise National Forest Willow Creek Campground (Mountain Home)

## Overview

Ten Mile is small campground, a quick 48 mile drive from Boise, Idaho, along State Highway 21. 

The campground is the one of three campgrounds (Bad Bear and Hayfork), a few miles past the Historic Idaho City. 

This area is known for its beautiful old forest of ponderosa pine. Wildflowers abound in the summer months.

Fishing opportunities in Mores Creek and some campsites are very near the creek. 

## Recreation

The campground sites have campfire rings, grills, picnic tables and a vault toilet. There are numerous opportunities to go hiking, biking, horseback rising and ride off-road vehicled in the area. In the winter the area is a playgound for winter sports including cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

This is a fee campground. Fee envelopes and a collection box are provided near the entrance. Please bring cash or check. 16 sites / $15.00 per site overnight fee. Extra vehicle fees may apply.

This campground contains 6 sites that can accommodate up to 6 people each. Picnic tables, a charcoal BBQ grill, and fire ring with benches are provided. The site is in an open area with shade. Vault toilets are provided. Parking spurs are paved. Due to its proximity to the highway, some noise from passing traffic is to be expected. No trash service.
