Mackay Tourist Park

County-managed Mackay Tourist Park operates as a city park that doubles as a free dry camping area in eastern Idaho's Lost River Valley. Campers contribute donations rather than paying set fees, with each site including a picnic table and fire pit spread across a grassy, tree-lined area that provides mountain views to the surrounding peaks.

The park functions on a first-come basis with an overflow area available when the main section reaches capacity. Lori notes the overflow sites "still had fire pits and picnic tables" despite lacking the tree coverage of the primary camping area. Deer move through the grounds during morning hours, and the facility includes restrooms and a gazebo for group gatherings.

Access requires checking availability since the park occasionally closes on certain weekdays or reserves space for local events like family reunions. The location serves as a base for fishing activities in the area's waters, with summer weather supporting outdoor pursuits. For additional options beyond this municipal offering, campers can explore camping near Mackay or check nearby Centennial Rest Area Hwy 93 less than a mile away.

Bring cash for donations and confirm the park is open before arrival, as operating schedules can vary seasonally.

Closed Tuesday’s and Wednesdays

Got there and the place was closed on Tuesday. The nice lady running the place told me about a free site 3 miles away toward the mountain and on the left. Follow the signs for sportsmen.

Beautiful Park

Beautiful city park that offers free dry camping. They only ask for a donation. Tree’d grassy park with picnic tables & fire pits at each site. Beautiful views of the mountains. Had 2 deer meander through the campground in the morning! A family reunion had the main park/campground reserved for the weekend but they had an overflow area that was just as beautiful minus the trees. But each site still had fire pits and picnic tables. Would absolutely recommend this campground & stay there again. Wish more towns offered something like this!
