Whiskey Rock Bay Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Free camping on Lake Pend Oreille comes with a significant caveat at Whiskey Rock Bay: the access road. Reaching the campground from Clark Fork means crossing Johnson Pass on roughly 30 miles of gravel forest road that takes most drivers well over an hour. High clearance is strongly recommended, and anything longer than about 16 feet will struggle with the tight, tree-lined sections. Snow can block the pass in late fall, making the May-to-September window the reliable season. Campers coming by boat from Farragut State Park Campground can reach the bay in about ten minutes, which many visitors consider the easier approach.

The sites sit on a cliff above the lake rather than directly on the water's edge, so access to swimming and kayaking requires navigating a steep drop-off, and the ease of that varies by site. A few spots reportedly sit closer to the water than others. The campground is small, with around five sites that are well-spaced and set among dense conifers. Verizon users report three to four bars of cell signal. Vault toilets are on-site and have been noted as clean, but there is no reliable potable water source, so bring a filter or a full supply.

Crowd levels tend to stay low even around holiday weekends, though the limited number of sites means arriving to a full campground is a real possibility, with few alternatives nearby. Note that the adjacent property is privately owned with active cameras, and the fence line marks the boundary. Maiden Rock Campground to the northwest provides a fallback if Whiskey Rock Bay is full. Arriving mid-week or early in the morning gives the best chance of securing a site.

Guests commonly noted the stunning lakeside location and peaceful, secluded atmosphere with clean facilities. The rough access road requires high-clearance vehicles, but visitors found the remote setting worth the challenging drive.

30 mile drive to nowhere

30 mile bumpy road with low hanging trees took an hour and a half drive just to get there and the campground was totally full. There was only about 5 spots. The campground is densely wooded with minimal view and access to the lake. Definitely not worth the drive to it. The road gets worse and worse the farther you go and there is pretty much nowhere else to camp if its full.

Quiet place of Respite

The road in is a typical forest road, no big deal if you're familiar with FS dirt roads. Coming in from Clark Fork you go over Johnson pass which can be blocked with snow during the late fall and winter seasons, 4wd only then. Once you're at the campsites, don't cross over the fence, it's private property and Mike DOES have active cameras and he DOES watch the property. There are no sites on the lakes edge. They're all up on the cliff which is beautiful but if you're hauling water, take it slow. Verizon is 3 to 4 bars. The vault toilet was clean with plenty of TP. I wouldn't come down here with anything bigger than 25' as the sites are small but well spaced.

Breathtaking views from this lovely campground

This lakeside campground is a true hidden getaway, perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds. The lake itself is stunning—clear, beautiful water. However, be aware that there’s a steep drop-off down to the lake, which might make getting to the water a little tricky depdning on which campsite you get. The road to get there is long and rough, I wouldn't recommend bringing a standard camping trailer, and you probably wouldn't want to take a car. But the remoteness is what makes this spot so amazing.  It’s incredibly peaceful, and when we visited, there was only one other camper around, so it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. If you’re looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path campground with amazing lake views and don’t mind a bit of a drive, this spot is worth the effort. Just make sure your vehicle can handle the rough road.

Beautiful Lake Side Campground

The road in and out is all gravel. While a low clearance vehicle could make it, I recommend a high clearance vehicle. But the campground itself is fantastic. Camping is free and there are vault toilets. I did see one water spigot, but I recommend filtering your own water. A few of the campsite are right on the lake while others and more inland. Definitely recommend!

Best secret on Pend O'reille

Whiskey Rock is one of the nicest spots on the lake. It's a serious drive by car and most of the traffic is by boat. I was once here the week before July 4th and even then, there wasn't a lot of people. This spot sits between several mountain ranges and right on the lake. It is quiet and peaceful. Lots of great recreation areas and wildlife in the area. Great views. The campsites are primitive, but there are outhouses on site. No potable water, so bring a filter or a jug!

Beautiful Campsites Reached by Boat

There are quite a few beautiful spots along this bay of Lake Pend Oreille that can be reached only by boat. This is a great place to feel secluded and away from the hustle and bustle of the lake, without having to drive the boat too far. We put the boat in at the Farragut State park and drove a mere ten minutes across the lake to this beautiful (free) safe haven. Because of where the bank is situated, the camps receive beautiful early morning light and then are shaded enough throughout the rest of the day. We had enough space at our camp to set up two tents, a kitchen, a fireplace, and our own bathroom. Other campers were along the bay, but we still had ample privacy. We all had a great time, and were even able to set up our hammock in the trees to overlook the lake. I loved this bay and hope to return many times in the future.
