    Temecula-Vail Lake KOA

    same same but pricey

    KOA probably has the best app that indicates availability and precise grand total price. There are bargains under "deals." I've been a Rewards member since June 2024 when I transitioned from a stucco house to a tiny travel trailer fulltime. All my KOA stays were through the app, never a telephone call that is precarious with other RV parks that have hidden charges and deposits seldom refunded.

    The Temecula KOA panders to campers with varying finances, but is far from free. While the fluffy class A crowd stays on a picturesque hill-with-a-view under shade, the Lower Merlot section where I docked is a treeless dusty ghetto that has a dilapidated but functional 18th century bathroom. It beats the boondocking bush toilets, and better than an outhouse vault. In fact, it has plumbing and showers that Beethoven probably appreciated.

    But still not cheap. During summer Temecula is cooler at 90°s f than Palm Springs at 118° f, but unlike the coast at 70°s f with very high summer site rates and limited availability because of travelers from everywhere. Tent camping and non-air-con RVs in Temecula could be unbearable for some in summer.

    Lime Saddle Campground — Lake Oroville State Recreation Area

    Nice campground with flush toilets and pay showers. The campground itself is hilly.

    We stayed on a Tuesday night in July and we think there was only one other camper in the campground. We aren’t sure because we arrived at 10:00 pm and didn’t see anyone but then saw them the next morning while touring the entire campground. Paved pads that were somewhat level, concrete picnic tables that were pretty clean, clean bathrooms and showers that required tokens. Pretty nice overall with some campsites arranged for groups of campers while others had good spacing. We stayed in site 28. The fire pit was very tall(36”) and about 75% full of ashes but we did not have a campfire. Mid-July was pretty warm with a low at night of 72. Overall a nice campground that is on the hills and above the lake. Some sites have lake views.

    Decent Campground

    Very warm weekend (as to be expected in July) bathrooms and showers were satisfactory. It’s a public campsite with lots of families and most are there for the lake. Sites were large enough but No hookups for RV. We just stayed at night and spent the days with family in the area. Met our needs.

    Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

    Quiet National Park Camping Experience

    I enjoyed camping here. It was colder than anticipated, but it was a very quiet and relaxed campground. Everyone observed quiet hours. I didn’t see a Camp Host any of the four days I was there, but I did see Park Rangers driving through.

    Big Meadow Campground

    Gorgeous but rough

    A few cons about this spot. There is NO drinking water. There are spigots but they all say non-potable. Most of the toilets were locked and the open ones were disgusting. There is no natural water to cool off in. The map looks like there is but there was none. There are so many mosquitoes that you have to hide in the tent during sunrise and sunset. Also, it’s right on the highway and the cars are loud! Finally, the road from Carson City going up Ebbets pass is a corkscrew of the death defying nail biting vomit inducing variety. With all of that in mind, it is the most beautiful spot I have ever visited.

    Morrow hill dispersed

    Excellent desolate site

    Great spot. Easy to get to in my car but definitely into the mountains so had to meander the mountain roads to get there. Gorgeous view along a wash. Easy enough to park. Very serene. One bummer is just the amount of sap if you park under the tree. I just moved the car over a bit. Enjoy!
