ScoutI called to reserve two sites months ago for Memorial Day weekend, asking specifically for adjoining sites since it didn't appear there was any way to do this online and we're camping with friends. The person answering the phone and taking my payment for the sites booked sites 77& 78 in my name. Today I called to confirm the reservation and find out the site numbers and it turns out we are clear across the park from each other at sites 16 and 78 and there are no other adjoining sites available. I guess we'll make the best of it since we already paid and really have no other options, however I'm incredibly disappointed that they couldn't follow through on a simple request when an accepting our payment. The customer service here sucks. I won't be back. I'm assuming our friends and their family won't either, and I’ll be sure to share my experience far and wide. Why on earth would I call to reserve two sites on the opposite ends of the park 10 months in advance? What if these were minor children staying in one of the sites? Ridiculous!
GuideThe park is very pretty. Walking along the trails, you can see where it gets its name! Lots of cool ledges and rock outcrops. We saw a moderate amount of birds and heard a bunch of critters (owls, a fox (?!)) one night.
We camped at non-electric site J. It was nice and big. We originally were to be at site G but it was way too small to fit our cars, tents, etc.
Pros:
- Quiet and decently spaced sites.
- Clean vault toilets. Did not use the shower house/other facilities.
- The firepits are flush with the ground and have cooking grates.
- Easy access to trails.
Cons:
- I'm not a trailer camper, but if I were I would not appreciate the vibes of the electric sites. The sites are very close together and walking through it felt like going through a festival or circus more than a campground.
- The firewood was a bit pricey compared to other parks.
TravelerStayed at park while traveling through the area. Needed an overnight place to stay. Several miles from highway. Place was quiet with large lots. Potable water and dump station available. Electric only on lots. Showers and restrooms available. Park surrounded by farm fields with geese landing all around. Decent place.
ScoutThought about brining my family here this summer but was chased off the property with my little girl for trying to look around and apparently "flying through the sites" going 8 mph. Wonder if they treat all new business this way? Think ill take my family somewhere more family friendly.
GuideDevil's Lake is one of my all time favorite state parks, and holds many fond memories for me. I have led youth camping trips here, gone on group trips with friends, and my now husband proposed to me here. I love love love Devil's Lake!
As far as tent camping, I don't love the campsites. There is very little privacy between sites, it is always packed, and there is lots of noise. The first night I stayed here, the group across from us kept us up until 2 am!
However, Devil's Lake is truly a fantastic place - we stayed for several days and had a blast in spite of the poor sleep.
GuideI went on a group trip to Devils Lake. Having camped at Devils Lake before, we decided to camp somewhere quieter in the area. My expectations were low going in, but Mirror Lake really wowed me. The park was beautiful and quiet. The campsites were very large. We came in a group with multiple cars and tents, but the sites easily accommodated us. The pine trees were gorgeous! The park was quiet at night, and there was great hiking and paddle boarding in the park itself. It was an incredible Basecamp for our devil's lake trip!
