The Best Hike-In Camping Near Dallas, Texas

## Overview

Murrell Park offers day use facilities, boat ramp access and primitive camping on scenic Grapevine Lake, in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas.   
  
The lake has become a premier recreation destination for the Southwest and offers some of the best camping, fishing and boating in Texas.   
  
This facility is open year-round, but particularly in hot summer months, the cool water provides a refreshing break from the Texas heat. 

## Recreation

Murrell Park is popular for picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, boating and fishing. The park is home to the well known Northshore Trail, which welcomes hikers and mountain bikers.   
Horses and moterized bikes including E-Bikes are not permitted on the Northshore Trail. Horses not permited in Murrell Park; however, there are horse trails available on the south side and west end of the lake.   
Hunting is not allowed in the park, but is available in some of the surrounding public lands. Anglers can fish along the shoreline or from the water; popular species include black and white crappie, catfish and bass.

## Facilities

This facility offers 11 tent-only campsites along the lakeshore with views of the water. These sites do not have electrical or water hook ups.   
  
All campsites have campfire rings and grills, picnic tables and some have picnic shelters. Two pit toilets are provided; shower and flush toilet facilities are not available.   
  
a comunity water spigot is available from spring through fall and are shut off some of the winter months. It is recommended that campers provide their own water.   
  
The park contains one low water boat ramp as well as a high water boat ramp.

## Natural Features

Grapevine is an 7,280 acre recreational lake with 60 miles of rolling shoreline. The area offers a wide variety of wildlife to observe, including white-tailed deer, turkey, squirrel, armadillo, rabbit and numerous birds species. 

## Nearby Attractions

The nearby city of Grapevine offers many historical attractions as one of the oldest settlements in the county, dating back to 1844, a year before Texas became a part of the United States.

Murrell Park

## Overview

Hickory Creek sits on the extremely popular Lewisville Lake near Dallas, Texas. The almost 30,000-acre reservoir attracts a fair amount of visitors in summer months with warm water temperatures and excellent fishing opportunities.

## Recreation

Visitors at Lewisville Lake enjoy picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing and relaxing. Photographers will stay entertained with wildlife and colorful sunsets, while hikers and bikers like to explore the 50 miles of natural surface and paved trails surrounding the lake.

## Facilities

The large campground boasts 121 sites with electric hookups. Tent primitive walk-in sites are not available at this time. Park amenities include hot showers, a dump station, and boat ramp.   


## Natural Features

The lake stems from the Elm Fork of the Trinity River in northern Texas, and offers little visibility, but plenty of room for boating and watercraft.   
  
The park sits on the Hickory Creek Arm of Lewisville Lake, very near to the suburbs of Dallas, Texas. 

## Nearby Attractions

Several public golf courses are located around the lake, and horseback riding opportunities are available, too. Hickory Creek is just 35 miles away from downtown Dallas.

Relax by the lake, tour an old Texas farm, or explore our rugged limestone hills and rare prairie pockets. Though we’re just a short drive from the DFW Metroplex, it feels like you’re a world away from the city.

Visit Cedar Hill State Park for the day or weekend. Bring your family to hike, bike, picnic, camp, geocache and nature watch. The park sits on the shore of Joe Pool Lake, so you can also swim, fish, and boat or paddle.

Camp at one of 350 developed campsites, all near restrooms with hot showers. All sites have water and electricity; 150 have sewer hookups, too. Several sites are ADA-accessible. Or hike to a primitive campsite, if trails are open.

High View Park is on a long peninsula on the western shore of Bardwell Lake, less than an hour south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area in north-central Texas.   
  
The lake has favorable fish and wildlife habitats, providing plenty of opportunities for fishing and hunting, and great locations for camping, boating and hiking. Deer, armadillo, rabbit, squirrel and a variety of bird species inhabit the area.

## Recreation

Many local fishermen consider Bardwell Lake one of the best kept secrets in the state. Bass fishermen seldom leave empty-handed. Crappie fishing is moderate, and catfish are usually excellent.   
  
The lake has a marina with fishing piers, two of which are enclosed (a small fee is charged for the use of these facilities), and there are several designated hunting areas around the lake, including those for duck hunting.

High View Park offers 21 campsites with water and 50-amp electric hookups, 18 campsites with water and 30-amp electric hookups, 10 picnic sites and one reservable group picnic pavilion, accommodating up to 50 people.  
  
A swimming area with covered benches, a full-service marina, four-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock make access to the lake easy. While public restrooms with showers help provide a comfortable camping experience.

The park is grassy and partially forested with a mix of shade and sun. The lake's cool, blue water provides a refreshing break from the Texas heat, while bluebonnets and other wildflowers surround the lakeshore each spring.

Waxahachie Creek Park is on the western shore of Bardwell Lake, less than an hour south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area in north-central Texas. City-dwellers frequent the park's campground and day-use area to enjoy outdoor activities without going far from home.  
  
The lake has favorable fish and wildlife habitats, providing plenty of opportunities for fishing and hunting, and great locations for camping, boating and hiking. Deer, armadillo, rabbit, squirrel and a variety of bird species inhabit the area. 

## Recreation

Many local fishermen consider Bardwell Lake one of the best kept secrets in the state. Bass fishermen seldom leave empty-handed. Crappie fishing is moderate, and catfish are usually excellent. The lake has a marina with fishing piers, two of which are enclosed (a small fee is charged for the use of these facilities), and there are several designated hunting areas around the lake, including those for duck hunting.   
  
The Bardwell Lake equestrian and multi-use trail begins at this facility. It provides over 13 miles of trails for horseback riding, biking or hiking. Visitors should be advised that the trail is located within a designated hunting area from September through March. 

## Facilities

Waxahachie Creek Park offers something for everyone with 65 campsites with water and 30-amp electric service, seven non-electric picnic sites and one reservable group pavilion, which can accommodate up to 200 people. There is also a day use area for visitors who are not camping overnight. The boat ramp at the upper end of the park is very shallow at normal lake level and not suited to launch ski boats or larger vessels. The boat ramp at the lower end of the park is suitable for all types of boats at normal lake level and has a courtesy dock for loading and unloading boats.

## Natural Features

The park is located on the upper reaches of the lake, near the mouth of a main tributary, Waxahachie Creek. The word "Waxahachie" is believed to be the Tonkawa Native American word for "Buffalo Creek."   
  
The lake's waters provide a refreshing break from the Texas heat and enormous blooms of bluebonnets and other wildflowers surround the lakeshore each spring.

Additional amenities include a swimming area with benches, two fishing areas, public restrooms with showers, one four-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock.
