Washington Crossing State Park - TEMP CLOSED FOR 2024

      Revolutionary History near Delaware River

Nestled along the picturesque Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of those destinations where American history practically jumps out from behind every tree. This sprawling, beautifully preserved historic park commemorates George Washington's daring Christmas night crossing of the Delaware in 1776, with charming colonial buildings, expansive green spaces, shaded walking paths and lovely riverfront scenery. Divided into Upper and Lower sections, the park offers plenty to explore, from historic homesteads and interpretive exhibits to scenic picnic areas and the impressive Bowman's Hill Tower. Unfortunately, while the park delivers a wonderful outdoor experience, traditional overnight camping isn't part of the equation unless your a Boy Scout or accompanying one of their troops.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spectacular Revolutionary War history at the very site of Washington's legendary Delaware River crossing; (2) Beautifully maintained grounds featuring mature trees, open lawns and scenic riverfront views; (3) Fascinating colonial-era buildings, historic demonstrations and educational exhibits that bring America's founding history to life; (4) Wonderful recreational opportunities, including walking, cycling, fishing, kayaking and picnicking; and (5) Convenient proximity to charming New Hope, the Delaware Canal towpath and Bowman's Hill Tower, offering plenty of opportunities to extend your adventure.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) No conventional public tent or RV camping, with overnight group camping restricted to organized Scout groups by prior arrangement; (2) No dedicated RV campsites, electrical hookups, water connections or dump station; (3) Park grounds generally close at sunset, limiting opportunities to linger into the evening; (4) Some historic buildings and attractions require admission fees or operate on limited schedules; and (5) Periodic restoration projects and special events can restrict access to certain areas, while the historic Washington Crossing Bridge's three-ton weight limit makes it unsuitable for larger RVs.

      Happy Camping!

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Round Valley State Park Campground

Peaceful Wilderness Escape for Adventurous Families

There's something wonderfully special about escaping into nature where the only sounds are rustling leaves, birds singing and the gentle movement of water along the shoreline. Nestled among the wooded hills surrounding the beautiful Round Valley Reservoir, this rustic SP campground offers families a chance to disconnect from everyday distractions and enjoy a little wilderness adventure together. Unlike traditional campgrounds, the campsites are accessible only by hiking or boating, so getting anywhere here requires some planning and a willingness to travel light. Once you've arrived, you'll find secluded, wooded campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Amenities are basic, with pit toilets and no showers, but the beautiful reservoir, scenic hiking trails, fishing and kayaking opportunities more than make up for the lack of modern conveniences. Our kids loved exploring the woods, spotting wildlife and gathering around a crackling campfire at night to share stories beneath the stars. For families comfortable with the hike, I'd recommend choosing one of the campsites along the reservoir shoreline for the lovely water views and peaceful surroundings. Just remember that swimming is limited to the park's designated beach area. Round Valley isn't your typical family campground, but for adventurous families who enjoy hiking, camping under the stars and making wonderful memories together, it's a beautiful place to experience nature at its finest!

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

      Pine Barrens New Jersey

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

      Tohickon Family Campground

      Simple, peaceful FHU

We stayed just a couple nights here on our way north. The camp host was helpful before our stay and during check-in. Our site was pretty isolated from the others, so it was very quiet (no complaints here). There is a decent mix of sunny sites by the river and shady sites under the trees. The weather was perfect mid September. There wasn't anything spectacular for me, but it was a good experience and it was a nice taste of fall PA scenery. Beware that the roads are tight for a big rig. Side note, it did seem like most campers lived there.

      Country Acres Campground

      Excellent But.

The campground is in excellent condition. The facilities are top notch. The excellence and care of the campground is evident. The 4 stars is only due to the road noise and many of the sites are on top of each other. You feel like your neighbor is at your camp fire.

      Tohickon Valley County Park

      First time camping

As far as experience it was good. The main issue was the campsite where we were was uneven and caused many of the sleeping arrangements that we had to be not level. This seems to be a specific issue to the group campsite number two as when we went inwards it seemed like everything else was much better.

      Lums Pond State Park Campground

      Lums Pond campground

First time at this campground really like it a lot will be returning. The bathrooms are always clean. The grounds are always kept up. Just a really nice place to stay. Most of the sites have some kind of shade.

    Guide to Collegeville

French Creek State Park and Evansburg State Park offer tent camping alternatives near Collegeville, Pennsylvania for those seeking outdoor experiences beyond glamping options. The area sits within the Piedmont Plateau region with elevations ranging from 200-500 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-90°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons feature cooler nights dropping into the 40-50°F range.

    What to do

Disc golf courses: Green Lane Park features a popular course that attracts enthusiasts. "Phenomenal disc golf course, hiking, and fishing," notes one reviewer at Deep Creek Campground at Green Lane Park. The course offers 18 holes through varied terrain with both wooded and open fairways.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple ponds and lakes provide year-round fishing access. "We spent Saturday afternoon fishing but not catching anything at Scott's Run. It's a beautiful location and it was still a fun way to spend the day with the kids away from the site," shares a camper from French Creek State Park Campground. The lakes contain warm water fish including northern pike and bass.

Creek exploration: Several parks feature shallow waterways perfect for wading. "Great place to creek hike, nice for horses, we did get a lot of ticks, but not deer ticks, thankfully," reports a visitor at Evansburg State Park. Most creeks maintain safe water levels from late spring through early fall.

    What campers like

Level camping pads: Many sites feature improved surfaces for easier tent setup. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other," reports a French Creek State Park camper. These improved sites reduce drainage issues during wet weather.

Wooded privacy: Tree coverage creates natural separation between campsites at select locations. "There is a lot of shade and the campground is laid out well," notes a reviewer from Boulder Woods Campground. The dense forest canopy helps maintain cooler temperatures during summer months.

Proximity to water features: Lakeside camping provides scenic views and easy recreation access. "The river sites are great but can be muddy and there is a big hill to get up and out," shares a camper at Philadelphia-West Chester KOA. Waterfront sites typically book 3-4 months in advance during peak summer season.

    What you should know

Site drainage concerns: Heavy rains can affect campsite conditions at certain parks. "Don't come if you're in a tent and it has been or will rain, it becomes flooded or turns into a mudpit," warns a camper at Tohickon Family Campground. Sites at lower elevations typically experience more drainage issues.

Bathroom maintenance: Facility cleanliness varies widely between parks and seasons. "The bathroom at the campground is very nice and new however it is a little on the dirty side," notes a French Creek visitor. Most facilities include flush toilets and hot showers with varying levels of upkeep.

Seasonal considerations: Weather patterns significantly impact camping conditions. "We stayed over for one night in early December. Showers and bathrooms were great!" reports a winter camper at French Creek State Park. Many campgrounds reduce services or close entirely between November and March.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature updated play equipment. "Very nice playground situated conveniently between the loops of the campground. It had some slides, a bridge, lots of monkey bars, ladders to climb on and the best feature was the zip line," describes a French Creek reviewer. Most playgrounds accommodate children ages 5-12.

Kid-friendly amenities: Water features provide entertainment for younger campers. "Nice playground and jump pad for kids. Nice camp store. Only downside was walnuts loudly hitting our roof at night!" shares a visitor at Philadelphia-West Chester KOA. Seasonal programming often includes organized activities on weekends.

Safety considerations: Park layouts affect security for families with young children. "I am a women in my thirties traveling alone and I felt very safe here," notes a French Creek camper. Most family-oriented campgrounds feature regular ranger patrols and well-lit common areas.

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Backing into spaces requires careful navigation at some locations. "The roads were very tight and you really had to watch how you drove through because of the trees," warns a camper at Lake-In-Wood Campground. Most parks accommodate RVs up to 30 feet, but larger rigs face limitations.

Hookup variations: Electric and water connections vary between campgrounds. "We had electric however no water or sewer hookup. There was a spigot for water at the next site over from us, so we didn't have to walk far to get fresh water," explains a French Creek visitor. Full hookup sites typically cost $10-15 more per night than partial hookup options.

Winter camping options: Year-round RV camping remains available at select parks. "The honor system of payment at the office makes it really easy to come in late and leave early, make sure you have cash on you as it was unclear if checks were accepted," notes a winter camper at French Creek State Park. Winter sites typically offer electric hookups but may have seasonal water restrictions.
