      Kiptopeke State Park Campground

      Camping in high winds

This campground was very enjoyable.  I spent a lot of time at the fishing pier, learning to ID birds I had never identified before.  Brown pelicans were everywhere near the sunken ships.  I also talked to the Hawkwatch people for a bit.

My campsite was far enough from the bathroom I couldn't hear the door slam, but since I was the only one in the F loop, that wouldn't have mattered.  Since the loop was so empty, it was an absolute pleasure.

Had the campground been full, I would have felt too close to the people in tents in the sites next to me.

One great thing was that there weren't tent pads so we didn't have to worry about how to fit two tents on to one tent pad.

      Machicomoco State Park Campground

      Beautifully Quiet

Note to Self: No Primitive Site reservations...EVER. I love this park. It's situated far enough from the busy traffic noise...beautiful Virginia city of Hayes. When I arrived, it was such a scorching day and there wasn't nearly enough tree cover to shield my tent from the "son of Hades". Suffered heat exhaustion almost to the point of death...Literally. Night was my only respite. If it hadn't been for the wonderful camp attendants who came to my rescue, it would've been an utterly failed experience. Bless their hearts. Other than that, this was a great training experience for an old Novice camper. Now that I'm a bit more practiced, I'm going back 😁, armed with knowledge and more confidence.

      Machicomoco State Park Campground

      Nice Campground

The good: super clean and new restrooms / showers. The entire parking immaculate. Stayed at site 12. Offers water views and shade. Site 13 is similar and is probably the most ideal site.

Cons: zero privacy. The sites are basically scattered around an open grassy area and fairly close together.

Be aware: sites are not vehicle accessible. Need to carry your kit 50-75 yards.

      American Heritage RV Park

      Friendly, Convenient to Colonial Sites

We enjoyed our stay at American Heritage. We were offered a change of our assigned site if we would prefer to be closer to the bath house. We preferred staying where we were until we discovered that the electric hook-up was far enough away on the grass that we couldn't reach. (We have a little Scamp 13 and the plug was just a little too short.) We had a pull-through site(every other row was pull-through).

It had a full hook-up. The cover on the electric post was missing rivets, so we had to put it back in place ourselves, but there was no problem with the electric. We used 30 Amp for the RV and plugged in our backup battery to the 15 amp plug. The water pressure was good and consistent. We've had problems at other RV sites. We used the sewer connection with no problem at the end.

We did not have an umbrella at the picnic table and seriously considered buying a screen tent because we stayed for 4 days and it was HOT. Some sites had more shade. In fact, that's one thing we'd change next time. The pool was wonderful, the showers were clean and we used the laundry with no problems--they take quarters and washing and drying one load cost $5.00.

The staff was very friendly and responsive. Overall, we had a great stay and would stay again.

      First Landing State Park Campground

      Great for Beachside Camping

This campground was a great location for a Virginia Beach vacation. It’s in the Chesapeake Bay so the water is calm and there is a large sandbar making for shallower waters which is great if you have littles in your trip. It was calming to stay there and spend everyday at the beach. There is hiking and biking paths as part of the park as well. I love that the shower rooms are not gendered so you don’t have a long wait to use one. I went for July 4th and was able to watch the fireworks right from the beach. So that was awesome. Overall good stay.

    Guide to Cheriton

Cabin accommodations near Cheriton, Virginia offer visitors access to both Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean waterfront experiences. Located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, these rentals provide year-round shelter options with varying amenities and comfort levels. Most cabins require advanced reservations, particularly during summer when tourism peaks from May through September.

    What to do

Beach exploration: Kiptopeke State Park Campground features two distinct beaches, including one designated for pets. "It has 2 beautiful beaches, one that allows pets and the other does not. There are wooden boardwalk trails in the park and a few of them leads to different areas on the beach," notes Annemarie R., who enjoyed collecting seashells along the shore.

Wildlife watching: The Eastern Shore location provides unique opportunities for observing coastal wildlife. At Thousand Trails Virginia Landing, visitors can experience shoreline ecosystems up close. "My kids loved catching tiny crabs in the mud every night," shares Angelica K. about her family's experience at the bayfront property.

Water activities: Multiple rental cabin properties provide water-based recreation options. "I use the park as a base for exploring the barrier island on the ocean side by kayak," explains Stuart M. about his experiences at Kiptopeke State Park, highlighting the versatility of cabin accommodations as a launching point for water adventures.

    What campers like

Convenient access to both bay and ocean: Sun Outdoors Cape Charles provides waterfront cabin options with easy access to both Chesapeake Bay and nearby Atlantic beaches. "If you venture into Cape Charles, it's a neat town with some good restaurant options," recommends Melissa P., noting the additional benefit of local dining within a short drive.

Seasonal amenities: The cabin rentals near Cheriton offer different experiences depending on when you visit. "We stayed during Memorial Day weekend last year and had a fantastic time!" reports Ashley R. about Holiday Trav-L-Park, where cabins provide shelter while maintaining access to seasonal swimming pools and outdoor activities.

Quiet locations: Several cabin properties provide peaceful settings away from crowds. "The campground seems a bit out of the way, but it's in a great location if you want to get away from the more crowded parks nearby," notes autumn L. about Virginia Landing, where cabin rentals offer a more secluded experience compared to busier resort properties.

    What you should know

Varied cabin types: The definition of "cabin" varies widely between properties. Virginia Beach KOA offers structured cabin options with standardized amenities. "So clean it was amazing. Had the best time ever and will definitely be back," reports Shannon P. about their cabin experience, highlighting the maintained condition of rental units.

Booking requirements: Most properties require minimum-night stays during peak season. Advance planning is essential, especially for waterfront units. Cabin availability is more limited than tent or RV sites at most locations.

Off-season opportunities: Winter cabin rentals provide different experiences and typically lower rates. "Prices come way down during the off season. Much of the facilities are closed but they keep open one of their bathhouses. Otherwise it's a peaceful stay in the winter months," explains Leo S. about Virginia Beach KOA.

    Tips for camping with families

Multi-generational activities: Cape Charles/Chesapeake Bay KOA offers structured activities for different age groups throughout the season. "The family and I were on the fence on if we wanted to start camping or not and then we found cape Charles... the staff and community made it one of the greatest memories for our family," shares TJ M., emphasizing how staff support enhances the family cabin experience.

Indoor comforts: Cabin rentals provide shelter from summer heat and insects, a significant benefit for families. "The bathhouse is good. But could use more stalls. Showers are individual unisex," notes Caroline M. about Virginia Beach KOA's facilities that supplement cabin accommodations.

Learning opportunities: Several cabin locations offer educational experiences for children. "Stayed at the cabins on the property and it's been well documented that they are haunted. There is a journal/guest log and there are many stories of pennies falling from the ceiling and the rocking chair rocking when no one is sitting in it," reports Kristy B. about Kiptopeke State Park's intriguing cabin history.

    Tips from RVers

Mobility considerations: First Landing State Park Campground features accessible cabin options with nearby facilities. "Large, private sites among really cool, bent trees. Clean, up-to-date facilities. Large laundry room," describes Adam and Suzanne B., noting the overall quality of amenities surrounding cabin units.

Weather planning: Eastern Shore cabin rentals experience significant seasonal variation. "We stayed for one night, check in was easy, staff friendly, restrooms and showers were very clean," reports Annika O. about Virginia Landing's facilities, highlighting the importance of clean shelter during transitional seasons.

Extra space considerations: When booking cabin accommodations, check for outdoor living areas. "We stayed in the large sites, in the last row beside the field, which was nice, gave extra parking and extra space to play," notes one camper about the value of additional outdoor space adjoining cabin rentals.
