Pioneer / Montrose City Campground

Walking the creek path, watching a neighboring granary, or swimming at the town pool across the street: Pioneer / Montrose City Campground gives campers something to do beyond the site itself. Set in Montrose, South Dakota, about six miles off I-90, this municipal campground runs from May through October and provides gravel pull-through sites with electric and water hookups, a dump station, and a bathhouse that multiple reviewers describe as clean and well-maintained.

The sites sit within a grassy park setting near a small river, with room to walk dogs and space for kids to ride bikes. Crowd levels tend to be low, particularly on weekdays. One note worth flagging: at least one reviewer reported discolored water and residue inside a filter after hookup, so campers with sensitive plumbing may want to run a quality inline filter as a precaution. The campground is close to town amenities on foot, including a post office, coffee shop, and a local bar.

"Nothing fancy but quiet and safe," notes Crumpet&Fritter, and that assessment holds across most reviews. The pool across the street charges an additional fee but has a lifeguard on duty in season. Campers looking to extend their time in the region can find options at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area about eight miles south, or check camping near Canistota for additional choices in the area. Reservations are available, and the campground operates within its full season from May 1 to November 1.

Great overnight stop

This campground was not far off I90 and was easy to find and navigate. Gravel sites in the pull through. Water and electric with a dump station. Lots of grass and places to walk the dog. Bath house was clean and close by. There is a small play area and also a pool with a lifeguard. It does cost extra but I’m sure it’s affordable. The camp host were so very nice and friendly. We had a small problem when we were getting ready to leave. And he was there ready to help and offer any assistance. And she called a place nearby to check on hours and service.
We ate the nice restaurant in town…My Place… and it was very good! Would definitely return and recommend!

Local hostility

I pulled in at 6:00 pm in late January. The park is deserted power and hook ups are off but there are no signs to indicate one way or another. It's dark so I have some food and read a little bit and I hear a car pull up outside. Bang! Somebody kicks or smacks the door of my rig and runs to their car and they take off. I got the message you don't want me here in Montrose. I won't stop in this town again. Cheers

Little hidden gem

Lovely sites by a small river. Clean and well maintained. Free showers and even a pool in season. For $30 for hook-ups the price can’t be beat.

Clean but bad water

It was an easy drive -thru . Well kept up . But the water is bad there . We use a filter on our water hose . It still messed up our faucets and toilet. Inside the filter was a bunch of black stuff in it . We had problems with the toilet for the rest of our 2 week trip . Don't think I would stay there again.

A nice stopover

Easy to find, just six miles off I-90 in quiet Montrose SD. Plenty of 30 and 50 amp sites. Almost empty on a Monday night. Town pool across the street. Take a walk up the creek to see a spooky old playground across the water.
