Boaters and water skiers frequent this 2,050-acre lake recreation area, creating a lively atmosphere that peaks during summer weekends. Lake Vermillion Recreation Area sits about 20 miles west of Sioux Falls, with two distinct camping areas serving different preferences. The east campground provides lakeside sites with electric hookups, while the west area houses four walk-in tent sites that offer more privacy.
"Overall, a quiet and scenic stay with great wildlife viewing and lake views," notes MickandKarla W., who stayed in the spacious corner site 43 with their 40-foot fifth wheel. The east loop accommodates larger RVs on level, paved sites with 50/30/20-amp service, though electric cords up to 30 feet may be needed. Sites along the water fill quickly during peak season, and the pull-through sites 49-62 near the boat ramp work better for smaller rigs due to tight spacing.
The tent-only sites require a short 200-foot walk from parking but reward campers with built-in shade canopies over picnic tables and fire rings with cooking grates. A sand beach, playground, and boat launch draw day users and overnight guests alike. Cell coverage varies by carrier, with Verizon typically showing three bars and T-Mobile around two bars. Spring brings gobbling turkeys and cackling pheasants, while summer brings crowds and boat noise that can continue until 9 PM.
Access follows Highway 42 west from I-29 exit 79, with clear signage directing visitors to the appropriate camping areas. South Dakota residents and non-residents pay different fee structures, with annual passes available for frequent visitors. "Vault toilets were very clean," reports Andrea during her March stay, though cleanliness standards may vary during busier periods.
Campers seeking quieter alternatives can explore places to camp around Canistota or check out Uncle B's Farm for a more rural experience.
Description
A popular destination for boaters, paddlers, and water skiers, Lake Vermillion is a 512-acre artificial reservoir on the East Fork of the Vermillion River. Both the river and the lake are named for the red quartzite stone found along the river’s banks. Lake Vermillion is popular with area anglers for its abundance of walleye, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. Two boat ramps provide easy access for fishing on the lake, as well as putting in other recreational watercraft. There are plenty of onshore activities at Lake Vermillion as well, with various sports fields, horseshoe pits and a short nature trail, all located within the lake’s camping and picnic areas. The year-round campground at Lake Vermillion, just 30 minutes west of Sioux Falls, features more than 90 tent and RV campsites in three areas, on the northwest and northeast shores of the lake. Most sites are equipped with electrical hookups, and all include picnic tables with sun shades, and fire pits with grills. There are also four rustic, walk-in tent sites, two ADA accessible sites, and seven camping cabins. All camp areas have water faucets, and access to flush restrooms, vault toilets, and showers; a dump station is located near the campground entrance. The West Campground also has a kid’s play area, picnic area, swim beach and fishing dock. Campsite rates are $17–$21/night, plus entrance fee; cabins are $45/night.
