Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

    Beautiful campground

We stopped here on our way through south Dakota headed back to Colorado. The staff were really friendly when we pulled in. Got us checked in right away, gave us directions to our site and sent us off. Thry also sell firewood for $5 a bundle. We are in tent site 4. There are only 4 strictly dedicated tent sites. you park across the street and walk a very short distance, maybe 200 feet to the site. The bathroom is in the parking lot along with a water source. The lake is on the other side of the parking lot. There is also a dumpster there in the parking lot.

The camp site is extremely spacious. plenty of room for tents if you have more then one. It's nice and mowed out with the bordering area still long providing an edge to the site. The four sites are clustered fairly close but the way it's landscaped, you won't see your neighbornuntil you step out to the path to your car. They all have fire rings with a grate to cook on. The picnic table has a nice shade canopy over top. The bathroom surprised me a little. most pit toilets are dark at night but this one has a light! it also has a trash can and hand sanitizer! it smells decent and it's very clean. it will quickly become BYTP but we are only here the one night so hopefully it won't run out. The lake is gorgous! it's a huge long lake and seems to be a favorite boat spot. water skis were abundant, which also meant it got pretty loud with boats buzzing, people partying and music blaring. this is why it lost a star. it was pretty loud up until probably 9 pm. The mosquitos are bad, bring bug spray!

    Pretty

Great area! Clean campground! Bathrooms well tended. Lake area is busy. Campsite I initially reserved was not suitable for a tent…the only flat area was right on top of the neighbor’s fire pit. We were able to move, and found a site suitable for a tent! Staff very friendly. Lots and lots of flies! So bring flyswatter!

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

    Nice but pricey

South Dakota charges a day use fee ($6) plus a fee for tent camping ($17); I opted to pay for an Annual Pass of $30 since I plan on doing more SD camping this year. The park had East and West areas, the tent sites (4) are only in the West side. As typical, the more scenic lakeside camping is for RV's, with flushing toilets and showers, but the trade off for privacy and seclusion at the tent site was worth it. Picnic tables have built in sun covers which were really great and with winds I didn't experience any bugs or mosquitoes. There is no tree cover so I enjoyed the night sky. The staff is friendly and helpful. There was only one trail, Otto Stream (no stream, no otters), which is about 1.5m trail thru restored prairie.

Clean well kept limited full hookup sites

Overall this park is average the sites are level and grassy limited shade sites tho, showers and bathrooms are close by and it’s quiet except the occasional train. It’s walking distance from the dirt track. Dumpsters close and trash barrels at each site which they empty often. Mostly weekenders here or people passing thru few seasonal workers.

    Very nice state park

During the off-season, sep thru mid May (when the kids are in school) is the perfect time to stay at this state park. I do not stay during the high occupancy times since I don't like crowded camping, and this park is close to Sioux Falls and right off I90, which can make this place busy. There is a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds. I would not camp at the west side north area since it is very new and has very few trees. Great park if you're just passing through. Residents of South Dakota love their camping, so book a site as early as allowable. I would recommend the east campground. Very pretty. There are four very nice tent only sites in one area. I would give it five stars but to many people during the season.

    Breathtaking

Ok- I just did a quick little hang here for an hour during a snowstorm - one of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen.

Large picnic area, with grills, vaulted toilet close by, a cute little secluded picnic area with fire ring off to the side, and a paved trail to the rec area.

Great day use area on a gorgeous lake.

The lake spans 693 acres with approximately 12 miles of shoreline in the southeastern part of South Dakota. Weather conditions include summer temperatures averaging 80°F with cool 55°F nights and occasional thunderstorms from May through September.

What to do

Water activities: Lake Mitchell Campground provides water-based recreation with tent sites directly overlooking the water. "This was the perfect campsite after driving 13 hours. I reserved in advance and got the spot right on the lake. Gorgeous view," shares Tracy K. who enjoyed the lakefront setting.

Hiking: Explore the trails around the area, though some visitors note varying maintenance levels. At Lake Mitchell Campground, one camper mentioned, "Had some hiking trails that weren't super maintained, and the lake in Augusta was green with algae."

Bird watching: Morning hours at Twin Lakes Campground offer exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. "Saw some watersports, lots of people fishing from boats, and the most spectacular morning of watching the flocks of birds diving at the water to get food with the morning colors in the background I've ever seen," reports Nate R.

What campers like

Lakefront camping: Many campers appreciate sites with direct lake views. At Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, visitors enjoy "spacious campsites right by the lake if desired," with one camper noting, "Our site was spacious enough for our 40' 5th wheel and F450. Site 43 offered a beautiful lake view."
