A popular destination for boaters, paddlers, and water skiers, Lake Vermillion is a 512-acre artificial reservoir on the East Fork of the Vermillion River. Both the river and the lake are named for the red quartzite stone found along the river’s banks. Lake Vermillion is popular with area anglers for its abundance of walleye, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. Two boat ramps provide easy access for fishing on the lake, as well as putting in other recreational watercraft. There are plenty of onshore activities at Lake Vermillion as well, with various sports fields, horseshoe pits and a short nature trail, all located within the lake’s camping and picnic areas. The year-round campground at Lake Vermillion, just 30 minutes west of Sioux Falls, features more than 90 tent and RV campsites in three areas, on the northwest and northeast shores of the lake. Most sites are equipped with electrical hookups, and all include picnic tables with sun shades, and fire pits with grills. There are also four rustic, walk-in tent sites, two ADA accessible sites, and seven camping cabins. All camp areas have water faucets, and access to flush restrooms, vault toilets, and showers; a dump station is located near the campground entrance. The West Campground also has a kid’s play area, picnic area, swim beach and fishing dock. Campsite rates are $17–$21/night, plus entrance fee; cabins are $45/night.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

    Nice but pricey

South Dakota charges a day use fee ($6) plus a fee for tent camping ($17); I opted to pay for an Annual Pass of $30 since I plan on doing more SD camping this year. The park had East and West areas, the tent sites (4) are only in the West side. As typical, the more scenic lakeside camping is for RV's, with flushing toilets and showers, but the trade off for privacy and seclusion at the tent site was worth it. Picnic tables have built in sun covers which were really great and with winds I didn't experience any bugs or mosquitoes. There is no tree cover so I enjoyed the night sky. The staff is friendly and helpful. There was only one trail, Otto Stream (no stream, no otters), which is about 1.5m trail thru restored prairie.

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

    Beautiful campground

We stopped here on our way through south Dakota headed back to Colorado. The staff were really friendly when we pulled in. Got us checked in right away, gave us directions to our site and sent us off. Thry also sell firewood for $5 a bundle. We are in tent site 4. There are only 4 strictly dedicated tent sites. you park across the street and walk a very short distance, maybe 200 feet to the site. The bathroom is in the parking lot along with a water source. The lake is on the other side of the parking lot. There is also a dumpster there in the parking lot.

The camp site is extremely spacious. plenty of room for tents if you have more then one. It's nice and mowed out with the bordering area still long providing an edge to the site. The four sites are clustered fairly close but the way it's landscaped, you won't see your neighbornuntil you step out to the path to your car. They all have fire rings with a grate to cook on. The picnic table has a nice shade canopy over top. The bathroom surprised me a little. most pit toilets are dark at night but this one has a light! it also has a trash can and hand sanitizer! it smells decent and it's very clean. it will quickly become BYTP but we are only here the one night so hopefully it won't run out. The lake is gorgous! it's a huge long lake and seems to be a favorite boat spot. water skis were abundant, which also meant it got pretty loud with boats buzzing, people partying and music blaring. this is why it lost a star. it was pretty loud up until probably 9 pm. The mosquitos are bad, bring bug spray!

    Great spot!

Had a nice stay here. Free hot showers were a welcome sight after the long hours on the road from New Hampshire. Only issue was that our visit was perfect timing for “black fly” season! Yikes! They bite something awful and they were everywhere! Eyes/nose/ears and don’t let them get into your tent/camper or you’ll be sorry! 😄 Best site here was hands down #15 with a really nice view of the lake. Be sure to check out Corn Palace which is just down the street, a bit. https://youtube.com/@skywaystohighways

Great campground! Picked a spot overlooking the lake...secluded (nobody else in our area) really impressed by the water pressure on the water spigots! Can't imagine there's a better campground in the area

    Worst Campsite We’ve Stayed At

We were right by a very busy road and the sites are very close together….our next door neighbors couldn’t even open their awning due to lack of room. The camp host (I THINK he was substituting) was very unfriendly and unhelpful. The lake had toxic algae bloom (NOT anyone’s fault) so if you’re planning on water activities, you might want to check first. I do believe there were other bigger sites and definitely ones away from the road.

    No issues

Small, nice campground. It worked fine for our 42 ft 5th wheel. We stopped at Corn Palace which is basically a sports arena and did not take long. There is a playground at the campground for the kids. I did not rate it 5 stars because it does not have a Lot of amenities.

Very clean, nice campsites and lake

We tent camped for one night! Had nice showers and bathrooms. Also had coin laundry on site. Playground for kids and swimming area in lake. There was hazardous algae in the water when we went, so couldn’t swim.

    Nice, clean campground

Stayed here on the last night of a 2 week road trip. Didn't get in until very late but there was still a few sites open that you could pay for one entering the campground. Bathrooms were nice and clean and the campsites were solidly spread out. Our campsite was literally right next to the lake!

    Lovely campsites along the lake

Nice swim area, pretty campsites, especially the tent areas that sit high over the lake and have pretty views of the water. Nice bathrooms and park. Very friendly park host, she came and introduced herself and welcomed us quickly.

nice place to spend the night

Spent a night in route to the Badlands and was happy enough with the experience.  I felt like the sites were a bit close together, but for a night that wasn't a huge concern.  Seems like during a busy weekend it could get loud and chaotic, but on a week night in the fall it was nice.

Enjoyed the water setting!  After driving a day of driving and checking out the Corn Palace, just 5 minutes away,  it was nice to be in nature again in a lovely location :)  Facilities were clean and the staff we encountered were friendly.

If you have a tent I encourage you to choose a tent only site since they are more secluded.

    Lake Mitchell Campground

    Quiet Campground

Stopped here as a last minute stop after having a great steak dinner at the Cattlemen’s Club. Camp host were super nice and helpful. Let us move the picnic table to get our off-road Boreas into the site. Bathrooms are clean and bug free. The only draw back was we were on the corner by the group tent site and it was non-stop traffic from 10pm to midnight. I guess the forgot to teach the Boy Scouts camp etiquette, that you don’t walk through another’s camp site to get to facilities. Our German Shepherd popped her head up and growled each time someone walked through our camp site.

    Great overnight stop

This is a nice campground for an overnight on the way to Custer. It’s a Bono’s the freeway, so there’s none of that noise, just some from the main road. Sites are level and well marked, although somewhat small. Most have full hookups, and there’s a nice tent area. Very friendly host. Older bathroom/shower, but it was very clean. Had some hiking trails that weren’t super maintained, and the lake in Augusta was green with algae. Overall would stay here again if we need a short stay.

    Twin Lakes Campground

    Great camp next to lake.

It was a bit out of the way from the interstate. Even passed one 4 way intersection in the middle of nowhere where I'm pretty sure you could make a deal with the devil. Lol. Camp had plenty of spaces, most with fire rings. Vault toilets. Lake was beautiful and boating was common. Saw some watersports, lost of people fishing from boats. And the most spectacular morning of watching the flocks of birds diving at the water to get food with the morning colors in the background I've ever seen. So don't miss that early morning coffee to see that show. Only problem we had, was it was near cow and horse pasture and there was literally poo on the road before camp. Being so close to that, the flies were the worst we have ever experienced in our lives. While we did stay 2 nights for free, we had to sit inside our bug canopy and still had to have a fly deterrent (swatters, hand towel, whatever) to even manage. Tip: cook outside your bug canopy, or you draw the bugs inside your canopy. All said, a great camp minus the bugs which may or may not be the case when you go. Also, there isn't much fuel to be had in the area, so be sure to have plenty of gas before you head that way.

    Nice and Quiet

This campground was a great deal for $20 per night with Passport America.  The onsite manager is very friendly and helpful.  Most of the sites are W/E only with a dump on exit.  there are FHU available for $5 more per night.  The property is well kept and there is a pool on the property for use for an additional fee.  There is a washing machine and dryer and bathrooms.  The sites are level pull through gravel.  They do have wifi, a bit slow though.

    Good stay!

We stayed at Hills RV Park 6/02/22. It's a good place to stop over on a trip. The site was level, the hook ups were great, the bathroom/showers looked good, but we didn't need them. The sites were pull-through and spaced well enough. There was a train at 3 am, but these things don't bother me. I rather liked it. There were people mowing the grass and working there until dark. It was very tidy and pleasant. I would definitely stay there again.

Employee all but kicked the door down on me.

The electrical boxes are so buggy and cobwebby and dusty that it's hard to find a properly grounded working electric box.

The women's bathroom is designed to be a single stall bathroom with shower, but the lock doesn't even hold the door shut properly bc the wood of the door frame is gouged out where the sliding bolt goes for the door. Had to prop my cane up under the door. An employee barged right in and acted offended when I mentioned someone was in there ... ??

So good I did want to tell anyone about it

We only stayed 2 nights here but could have stayed much longer. This RV campground is perfect. The attention to detail you see in this park is not something we have seen a lot during our travels. The gravel roadways to each campsite are groomed perfectly level. Art, sculptures and flower pots are everywhere. Not a thing out of place. The Wifi was really fast…the best we have seen in over 1 yr and full time camping. The office and store have ice and a wonderful selection of goodies, The park is surrounded by corn and soybean fields and is quiet. This is a real gem of a campground. Not a thing wrong with it. We highly recommend. We had over 50Mbps on our Verzion and ATT hot spot as well as the RV park's Wifi system. This place is smoked hot for internet connectivity. This park is Big Rig friendly with very large pull throughs
