    Mitchell KOA

    Family Friendly Stop Over

We stayed at the Mitchell KOA one night as a stop over on our way to Custer, SD. The feature we liked best is that all RV, 5th Wheel/Camper sites are set up as pull through. We called while on the road to see if they had any open spots, and they got us in for the night:) The campground hosts were very welcoming and friendly. There is an outdoor pool, but it was pretty crowded (With temps in the 90's who could blame anyone!!!) and they have a cute little miniature golf course too!! This is a pet friendly place with a large fenced in area for your pets to play in. The only drawback we saw was the lack of trees for shade and privacy. You can literally shake hands with your next door neighbor while sitting at your picnic table.

If you love the outdoors this is the place for you.

The construction on the dam began in 1946 and started generating electricity in 1954. Most of the sites are smaller sites and great but there are some sites for larger rigs. Make sure you check on your size before making your plans. If you have a boat bring it or anything that you can put in the water, kayak, SUP, canoe, or any other type boat. The roads into the park and in the park are in very good shape and the landscape is well maintained.

For me a very big draw would be the bald eagles in the fall and winter. Birders will enjoy this area because of the opportunity to observe the majestic Bald Eagle. The eagles roost area in the park is a designated National Natural Landmark. Many bald eagles winter below the dam and catch their fish in the lake. They usually perch within 50 feet of the riverbank in the tall cottonwood trees. Check them out in the morning while feeding. Walkers and cross country skiers are allowed in the bald eagle area but you must not disturb the roosting bald eagles. Motorized traffic is not allowed in the roosting area as it may disturb them. If you are planning to visit the campground during the roosting season check with the campground to make sure they have not closed the campsites due to the possibility of the eagles being disturbed.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

    Mitchell KOA

    One of the better KOAs

Well-maintained facilities, the team was very friendly and helpful, and the location provides easy access to I-90 and downtown Mitchell. It's a great spot to spend a couple of nights recharging if on a long trip-- the 24-hour laundry room is a nice touch for that. Or use it as your base to check out the world-famous Corn Palace. The sites and roads have plenty of room to maneuver in and out of and if you don't book a site with sewer, the dump station is easily accessed. Also, even though you're close to I-90 and the campground is on SD 38, you don't really hear road noise so it's quiet for sleeping.

    Peaceful, well maintained campground

Campers were mostly in RVs, I was in a tent and not surrounded by many others. Bathrooms and showers were very clean and well maintained and the owner was nice and gave us tips on things to do in the rest of South Dakota!

Guide to Platte

Cabin camping near Platte, South Dakota offers rustic retreats along the Missouri River where Lake Francis Case creates numerous sheltered coves for fishing and boating. The region sits at approximately 1,500 feet elevation with summer temperatures averaging 80-90°F during peak season. Winter closures affect several recreation areas, with some cabin options unavailable from November through March due to bald eagle nesting periods.

What to do

Fishing piers and boat access: Randall Creek Recreation Area provides cabin accommodations with proximity to prime fishing spots. "Many bald eagles winter below the dam and catch their fish in the lake. They usually perch within 50 feet of the riverbank in the tall cottonwood trees," notes a camper who recommends morning wildlife viewing.

Wildlife viewing: The Missouri River corridor creates exceptional bird watching opportunities at American Creek Campground. "We would visit this campground every weekend if we could. It's right within the city of Chamberlain but you don't realize it once you enter," writes one visitor who enjoyed the spacious sites and tree coverage.

Mini golf and recreation: For families seeking additional activities beyond cabin stays, Mitchell KOA features recreational options on-site. "Has golf and playground for the kids. They clean bathrooms after checkout time, at 11am. No assigned tent spots, but lots available and on nice grass, with tables and a firepit," reports a camper who found the location ideal.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Cabin renters at American Creek Campground consistently mention bathroom cleanliness as a priority. "I found this campground to be clean, and the sites were spacious, and the view of the Missouri river from my space was terrific. Very helpful check in and very clean bathrooms," notes one reviewer.

Spacious sites: Buryanek Recreation Area provides cabins with ample outdoor space between units. "Big sites. A lot of room between sites. Well maintained dirt road to access recreation area. Spacious campground," reports a camper who appreciated the privacy and setting.

Swimming options: During summer months, some cabin locations offer swimming access. At Famil-E-Fun Campground & RV Park, a visitor noted, "We stopped at Betts for a night on our way to the Black Hills and it was a great stop. The Corn Palace is near by and our kids had a great time in the outdoor pool."

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Some cabins near Platte close during winter months, particularly at Randall Creek Recreation Area. "Park closed Nov 15 - 3rd Friday in March due to eagles nesting," mentions a reviewer, noting that watching eagles is a major attraction but also affects availability.

Road conditions: Access to certain cabin locations requires navigation of unpaved roads. "Access to this area is off highway 44 but be prepared for several miles of minimally maintained dirt road (with some big hills) to get there," warns a visitor to Buryanek Recreation Area.

Price variations: Cabin costs fluctuate based on season and amenities. Hills RV Park offers more budget-friendly options: "This campground was a great deal for $20 per night with Passport America. The onsite manager is very friendly and helpful. Most of the sites are W/E only with a dump on exit."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families staying in cabins should consider locations with dedicated play areas. "It is a nice place and has a nice playground," notes a visitor to Buryanek Recreation Area, making it suitable for families with younger children.

Fenced pet areas: For families traveling with pets to cabin accommodations, Mitchell KOA offers designated spaces. While the existing campground description mentions this feature, additional amenities include "They have a pool and a nice dog park. Many of the sites have large shade trees."

Supply availability: Families staying in cabins should note nearby shopping options. At Hills RV Park, a reviewer noted, "Clean, friendly, convenient location just off interstate with Dollar General in walking distance. Nancy is great!"

Tips from RVers

Pull-through accessibility: RVers who tow vehicles appreciate Famil-E-Fun Campground's layout when staying in cabins. "I stayed in a pull-through site #5 which was mostly gravel and pretty level - about 2" on one side with Anderson levelers. Good electricity, functional sewer hookup."

Storm preparation: Weather conditions can change rapidly in this region. At American Creek Campground, a camper warns, "The storms in the area just appear. We've gone camping out here twice and both ended very scarey. Beautiful area but also not worth it to go back for a third time."

Connectivity considerations: For those needing to stay connected while cabin camping, cellular service varies by location. One visitor to Hills RV Park reported, "Verizon connection was good and I could stream live TV on Hulu. This is a utilitarian campground rather than a vacation destination."
