Washington Crossing State Park - TEMP CLOSED FOR 2024

      Revolutionary History near Delaware River

Nestled along the picturesque Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of those destinations where American history practically jumps out from behind every tree. This sprawling, beautifully preserved historic park commemorates George Washington's daring Christmas night crossing of the Delaware in 1776, with charming colonial buildings, expansive green spaces, shaded walking paths and lovely riverfront scenery. Divided into Upper and Lower sections, the park offers plenty to explore, from historic homesteads and interpretive exhibits to scenic picnic areas and the impressive Bowman's Hill Tower. Unfortunately, while the park delivers a wonderful outdoor experience, traditional overnight camping isn't part of the equation unless your a Boy Scout or accompanying one of their troops.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spectacular Revolutionary War history at the very site of Washington's legendary Delaware River crossing; (2) Beautifully maintained grounds featuring mature trees, open lawns and scenic riverfront views; (3) Fascinating colonial-era buildings, historic demonstrations and educational exhibits that bring America's founding history to life; (4) Wonderful recreational opportunities, including walking, cycling, fishing, kayaking and picnicking; and (5) Convenient proximity to charming New Hope, the Delaware Canal towpath and Bowman's Hill Tower, offering plenty of opportunities to extend your adventure.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) No conventional public tent or RV camping, with overnight group camping restricted to organized Scout groups by prior arrangement; (2) No dedicated RV campsites, electrical hookups, water connections or dump station; (3) Park grounds generally close at sunset, limiting opportunities to linger into the evening; (4) Some historic buildings and attractions require admission fees or operate on limited schedules; and (5) Periodic restoration projects and special events can restrict access to certain areas, while the historic Washington Crossing Bridge's three-ton weight limit makes it unsuitable for larger RVs.

      Happy Camping!

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Round Valley State Park Campground

Peaceful Wilderness Escape for Adventurous Families

There's something wonderfully special about escaping into nature where the only sounds are rustling leaves, birds singing and the gentle movement of water along the shoreline. Nestled among the wooded hills surrounding the beautiful Round Valley Reservoir, this rustic SP campground offers families a chance to disconnect from everyday distractions and enjoy a little wilderness adventure together. Unlike traditional campgrounds, the campsites are accessible only by hiking or boating, so getting anywhere here requires some planning and a willingness to travel light. Once you've arrived, you'll find secluded, wooded campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Amenities are basic, with pit toilets and no showers, but the beautiful reservoir, scenic hiking trails, fishing and kayaking opportunities more than make up for the lack of modern conveniences. Our kids loved exploring the woods, spotting wildlife and gathering around a crackling campfire at night to share stories beneath the stars. For families comfortable with the hike, I'd recommend choosing one of the campsites along the reservoir shoreline for the lovely water views and peaceful surroundings. Just remember that swimming is limited to the park's designated beach area. Round Valley isn't your typical family campground, but for adventurous families who enjoy hiking, camping under the stars and making wonderful memories together, it's a beautiful place to experience nature at its finest!

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

      Pine Barrens New Jersey

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

      Tohickon Family Campground

      Simple, peaceful FHU

We stayed just a couple nights here on our way north. The camp host was helpful before our stay and during check-in. Our site was pretty isolated from the others, so it was very quiet (no complaints here). There is a decent mix of sunny sites by the river and shady sites under the trees. The weather was perfect mid September. There wasn't anything spectacular for me, but it was a good experience and it was a nice taste of fall PA scenery. Beware that the roads are tight for a big rig. Side note, it did seem like most campers lived there.

      Country Acres Campground

      Excellent But.

The campground is in excellent condition. The facilities are top notch. The excellence and care of the campground is evident. The 4 stars is only due to the road noise and many of the sites are on top of each other. You feel like your neighbor is at your camp fire.

      Beautiful campground, loud campers

Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.

    Guide to Wayne

Wayne sits at the foothills of southeastern Pennsylvania's Valley Forge region, with elevations ranging from 400-600 feet above sea level. The area experiences distinct seasons with humid summers averaging 85°F and winter lows around 25°F. Most campgrounds near Wayne are situated in mixed hardwood forests with oak, maple, and pine trees that provide natural shade during summer camping months.

    What to do

Creek exploration: Evansburg State Park Campground offers excellent creek hiking opportunities for visitors of all ages. "Great place to creek hike, nice for horses, we did get a lot of ticks, but not deer ticks, thankfully," notes one visitor. The park's small running creek creates natural exploration paths through shaded woodland.

Disc golf competitions: Boulder Woods Campground maintains an extensive disc golf course that attracts both beginners and tournament players. "This place has boulders and woods. They also have a disc golf course and they rent and sell discs. That's where we fell in love with disc golf," shares a camper. The course winds through wooded terrain, creating natural obstacles and challenges.

Off-season hiking: French Creek State Park remains open year-round with trails accessible during winter months when many other parks close. "Stayed over for one night in early December. Showers and bathrooms were great! If you're traveling through, there are many places to eat nearby," reports a solo female traveler who felt very safe during her off-season visit.

    What campers like

Private wooded sites: French Creek State Park Campground offers secluded camping spots with natural separation between sites. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other," notes one reviewer. Another camper praised the layout: "The campground is laid out well. There are three separate loops to camp at, Loop C is the only loop that allows pets."

Riverside camping: Philadelphia-West Chester KOA features premium sites along the Brandywine River. "The sites, particularly those on the Brandywine River, have amazing views. They are close enough for you to camp with a group, but most also have a small fence between each site to clearly delineate between the sites," shares a visitor who appreciated the balance between sociability and privacy.

Yurt accommodations: Lums Pond State Park offers year-round yurt camping near Wayne, Pennsylvania with modern amenities not typically found in tent sites. The sturdy yurts are situated near water features with good access to hiking trails. A visitor noted, "We paid $46 per night plus fees for a FHU 50 Amp Back-in site. This place is a gem, even among nice state parks."

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Lums Pond State Park Campground requires planning well ahead, especially for yurt accommodations. "I understand why it is so difficult to get a reservation at Lums Pond. I don't know if it's the host campers or the management, but they're definitely doing something right," explains a camper who struggled to book a spot during peak season.

Site selection at Green Lane Park: Sites lack privacy despite beautiful surroundings. "The park is lovely, but the camping facilities are subpar, primitive and lack any kind of privacy. The tent spots are just lined up against one another facing a service road," warns a visitor. Another noted: "Zero Privacy. The sites are large but there is NO privacy."

Weather considerations at Tohickon Campground: Low-lying areas become problematic during rain. "Don't come if you're in a tent and it has been or will rain. It becomes flooded or turns into a mud pit," cautions a regular visitor. The tent areas near the creek are particularly vulnerable to flooding and mud.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA offers family-centered activities with regular notifications. "They offer so many activities during the day and text you so you don't forget. The place is so clean including the bathrooms," shares a parent. The jumping pillow and playground are particular favorites for younger campers.

Kid-friendly fishing: Hibernia County Park maintains a dedicated children's fishing area with stocked species. "The children's pond is a short ways away for well stocked fishing," notes a parent of children ages 3-12. Another visitor shares that the "Great children's pond for 12 and under" makes fishing accessible for younger campers.

Unique accommodations: Lake-In-Wood Campground provides specialized lodging that appeals to families with children. "There are a lot of really neat and different rentals here like a tree house, double decker bus, among others," reports a visitor. The campground combines these unique accommodations with traditional camping options including yurt camping near Wayne, Pennsylvania.

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Tohickon Family Campground presents challenges for larger motorhomes. "The roads are very tight and you really had to watch how you drove through because of the trees," notes one RVer. A different camper mentioned: "Nice new gravel and hook ups. Spacious sites," indicating recent improvements to accommodate larger rigs.

Winter camping considerations: French Creek State Park accommodates winter RV camping with functioning facilities. The honor system payment method makes late arrivals possible during off-season months. "Make sure you have cash on you as it was unclear if checks were accepted," advises a winter camper. Year-round availability makes this location ideal for RVers seeking off-season camping.

Hookup arrangements: Carefully review site maps before booking as utility placement varies significantly. "The site offered electric and water but they were on 2 different sides. This made it difficult to set up. Had to park the camper crooked to use both," notes an RVer at Lums Pond. This layout consideration is particularly important for larger rigs with limited cord and hose lengths.
