Afton State Park Campground permits pets throughout its backpacking sites, cabins, and yurts, requiring leashes in common areas while offering secluded wooded spots for privacy with animals. The backpacking sites require a one-mile hike with a steeper incline at the end, providing excellent separation between campsites to minimize disturbance from other campers' pets. Lebanon Hills Regional Park and Lake Byllesby Regional Park also welcome pets with designated pet-friendly areas and convenient amenities like electric hookups, water access, and sanitary facilities. Sites with heavy forest cover provide natural shade for dogs during summer months. Campsite preparation should account for wildlife encounters as visitors have reported seeing deer, wild turkeys, and small mammals throughout these parks.

The St. Croix River access at Afton State Park provides excellent opportunities for dogs that enjoy swimming, with a sandy, shallow warm area where eagles soar overhead. Most campgrounds require pets to remain on leashes no longer than six feet when outside designated off-leash areas. Campers should prepare for varying terrain when walking dogs, as Afton features both prairie landscapes and wooded areas with significant elevation changes. Several parks maintain hiking paths ranging from easy walks to more strenuous trails suitable for active dogs. The vault toilets and water stations at Afton remain stocked and functional year-round, though water pumps may require 30 seconds to start flowing. Seasonal availability varies, with Lebanon Hills open April 30 to October 12, while Afton State Park and Willow River State Park operate year-round for continuous pet-friendly camping options.

      Frontenac State Park Campground

      Beautiful Bluffs

We decided to make a spontaneous camping trip one weekend and found ourselves at Frontenac. The cart-in site we were at was very spacious but wasn't as secluded as we would have hoped. We didn't feel claustrophobic by any means but we could see several other sites from ours. We went early in the year and maybe the summer growth solves that problem. Bathrooms nearby but no water available. It was also windy enough in the evening that we called it an early night but I think that was just a front movingly through and had less to do with the hill we were on.

We went on a hike that showed off the wonderful bluffs along the Mississippi. As far as camping in Minnesota goes we prefer the options on the North Shore, but really enjoyed Frontenac and will be back to continue exploring.

      Interstate State Park Campground

      Expeditions at Interstate!

This is a state park on the Wisconsin side of the St Croix River, which is mirrored by a comparable but smaller state park in Minnesota on the wrst side of the river, both being part of the wild and scenic St Croix National Waterway. Although the campsites themselves are pretty run of the mill, the setting is spectacular in terms of breathtaking scenery, and myriad outdoor activities from rock climbing in the river gorge, paddling the river, hiking miles of trails, and learning geology at the Ice Age geology visitors center. If you are tenting camping, the south loop is great, and if you pick campsite 65 or 67 you will have direct access to the river which is peaceful and good for paddle opportunities. There are picnic areas with swimming along the river which is nice for group gatherings, and one is designated for folks with pets. Some of the rugged hiking trails along the bluffs and cliffs go right along the edge with minimal guard rails or walls, so keep a close eye on kids and pets because going over the edge is a possibility so utmost caution is advised.

      Dakotah Meadows RV Park

      Quiet and safe

Small little campground next to large casino. We lucked out and were able to stay 2 nights without reservations….only had to move because they were fully booked for the 4th…large concert event happening across the street. You will need to call early in the day to talk to office staff…who are very friendly. If after hours and there are no spots, you can dry dock in large lot in front of office. There is fuel on site as well as RV wash station. Bath house and laundry and card controlled ($5 card deposit on check in)…well maintained facilities. Dog park available, watch a few spots in fence near bottom where fencing has risen up…little dogs could easily climb under. Very convenient for visiting Minneapolis…25/30 minutes from airport/Mall of America (Aquarium) and Security patrols regularly and there is shuttle if you want to visit casino. Pool at hotel is not included. Golf attraction is being completed next door so there was some construction traffic during day as expected.

      Tresure Island RV Park

      Crowded park, nice people

We were here for a night to see a concert at the amphitheater and everyone was super friendly. It was easy to check in, and we were able to do laundry and shower which was great. It’s mostly gravel but they have some tent sites on the grass. They are dog friendly and have some grassy areas to walk your pets which was great.

      Good Campground but Close Sites

Sites are close to each other, but easy access, clean grounds and facilities, friendly staff, and a K9 fenced area for a pet friendly campground.

    Guide to Hastings

Camping near Hastings, Minnesota offers access to the Mississippi and St. Croix River valleys with terrain elevations ranging from 675 to 820 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons provide cooler temperatures in the 50-70°F range. Campgrounds in this region offer varying degrees of privacy through natural vegetation barriers.

    What to do

Hiking trails: Afton State Park Campground provides extensive trail networks across varying terrain. "I hiked 11 miles here and it was awesome!" reports Mike K. The park offers both prairie and wooded sections with significant elevation changes.

Water recreation: Lake Byllesby Regional Park provides opportunities for swimming, fishing, and boating. According to Daryl L., there's "Nice showers and restrooms. Paved RV pads. Near lake and excellent bike path. Great brewery and winery close by." The lake features a swimming area and boat launch for water activities.

Prairie exploration: Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground offers unique prairie landscapes alongside wooded areas. Andrew C. notes, "The prairie sites are just hilly enough - and in August - the grass long enough to give the sites a sense of privacy and seclusion." The trails showcase a diverse ecosystem with both open fields and dense forest.

    What campers like

Waterfall viewing: Willow River State Park Campground attracts visitors for its impressive falls. Jessica B. shares, "Willow River falls is definitely a beautiful site to see. Definitely a place to camp if you like to be active and explore the trails. Winter, summer or fall!" Most hiking trails start directly from the campground area.

Site separation: Afton State Park Campground offers well-spaced sites. Adam P. explains, "My campsite was perfect. The woods made it very secluded. It was close enough to water and bathrooms so it wasn't bad if you planned." This arrangement provides privacy even during busier camping seasons.

Family amenities: Lebanon Hills Regional Park features excellent facilities for families. Angela L. describes, "We stayed in the East Loop which is for smaller RVs and tents. It has electricity but no water hookups, however there are water pumps. The play area was really nice and looked brand new. Our girls loved making new friends to play."

    What you should know

Water availability: Check water access before hiking at Afton State Park. Warren H. warns, "None of the water faucets or water pumps on the trails at Afton State Park are working. The good news is you can fill up on cold drinking water at the visitor center before trekking around the park's beautiful hiking trails!"

Site preparation: Lebanon Hills Regional Park offers varied site options. Katie C. explains, "Sites with full hookups or more remote sites with electric that are more tucked away in the pines." Campers should select sites based on their privacy needs.

Weather considerations: Pet friendly camping near Hastings, Minnesota requires preparation for sudden weather changes. At Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, spring camping often encounters wet conditions. Timothy S. notes, "Sites were great but a little wet. Some of the south trails are closed because its too wet."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Lake Byllesby Campground offers excellent facilities for children. According to tara M., "Loved it!! Location is fabulous, sites are all brand new and playgrounds are a kids dream." The campground features two distinct playground areas.

Camping cabins: For families seeking pet-friendly accommodations with less setup, consider Afton's cabin options. Alison O. describes, "Perfect little cabin nestled in the southern half of the park! Screened in porch, heated with electricity, and two double bunk beds!"

Activity planning: Multiple activities keep children engaged at Cannon Falls Campground. Anna S. reports, "The campground was organized and clean. We felt like we were secluded yet there were so many spots at the campground! The campground offered music and an arcade. Perfect for a rainy weekend."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground requires careful site selection for RVs. Deb M. advises, "There's some sites that are tricky to back a trailer into, which would have been helped by some maintenance - there were LOTS of branches that needed to be trimmed back." Call ahead to confirm site dimensions.

Hookup options: Lake Byllesby Regional Park provides excellent lakeside RV sites. Lisa D. notes, "All spots have a lake view and the beach is within walking distance. We love it here. It's not too easy to get spots on the holiday weekends, but somehow we managed it." Reservations should be made 3-4 months in advance for summer weekends.

Access considerations: For pet friendly camping near Hastings with RVs, Hoffman City Park provides basic amenities at lower cost. Jason W. cautions, "This campground is literally adjacent to the highway. You will hear it all night." Consider noise levels when choosing sites for pets sensitive to sound.
