Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Menomonie, WI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Twin Springs Resort Campground near Menomonie accepts pets at all campsites with spacious, shaded areas for both tent and RV camping. The campground features electric hookups, water, and sewer connections at many sites, making extended stays with pets comfortable. Camping with dogs is permitted throughout the property, though pets must remain leashed in common areas. Highland Ridge Campground, located just outside Spring Valley, also welcomes pets with generously sized wooded sites that provide natural shade and privacy between neighbors. Sites at Highland Ridge are kept very clean and well-maintained, with many campers noting the tremendous spacing between sites makes up for any lack of dense screening vegetation.

Dog-friendly hiking opportunities surround these campgrounds, with several short trails at Highland Ridge offering peaceful woodland walks suitable for leashed pets. Lake Wissota State Park Campground, a short drive from Menomonie, provides additional pet-friendly camping options with access to shoreline areas where dogs can cool off during summer months. Campground bathrooms and shower facilities at these locations are regularly cleaned, often before 6 AM daily, ensuring a comfortable experience for all campers. Visitors camping with pets should be aware that while most sites are spacious, some campground loops (particularly sites 28-38 at Highland Ridge) feature more sloped terrain that may be challenging for setting up with dogs. Most campgrounds in the area maintain quiet hours that help minimize barking disruptions, though specific pet waste stations may be limited, so campers should bring their own disposal bags.

    Brunet Island State Park Campground

Best state park I’ve been to!

Stayed here on a east/west camping trip. Beautiful state park. Sites are shaded and large. Big enough that we were able to tie out 2 large dogs each on 30 ft leads. The park has a bicycle path that walkers can also use that’s along the river. Our site backed up to the bicycle path with the river behind us. Great place to walk. Staff and hosts very friendly and helpful. Don’t be alarmed when you drive by a school and housing area to get to it! The park also has an off leash dog park. I wasn’t able to check that out though but have wished state parks would consider adding. Bathrooms extremely clean with the best state park showers Ive ever used (and I mostly camp at state parks across the US). If I get back to this area I would definitely camp here again.

    Tresure Island RV Park

    Crowded park, nice people

We were here for a night to see a concert at the amphitheater and everyone was super friendly. It was easy to check in, and we were able to do laundry and shower which was great. It’s mostly gravel but they have some tent sites on the grass. They are dog friendly and have some grassy areas to walk your pets which was great.

    St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park

    Top Shelf

Beautiful, spacious, trees but open. Nice trails, clean restrooms, level sites. No alcohol allowed and no pets! Fire rings, sturdy picnic table. Electric and water.

I made reservations online and when we arrived they said I had reserved a place at Elmo Lake which was 20 miles away. Same 2 county facilities but different campgrounds. Oops my bad. Different addresses!

    Tresure Island RV Park

    It’s a parking lot…

We are here for a show at the casino and thought it would be fun to bring the camper down and glamp for the weekend. It is just a parking lot but the sites are all pull through and there is plenty of room between sites and ours was perfectly level.

We have dogs so the fact that it’s all asphalt and rock is a bit of a bummer but we are close to the exercise area and they do love little walks. It also seems to be controlling some of the normal bad pet parent behavior we see at even parks. Like letting the dogs run with out leashes or tethering them all day to bark at everything.

The sites do not have fire rings but there are some community ones and it appears the other campers brought their own smokeless fire pits to use.

There is a shuttle to the casino and at 7pm folks seemed to clear out to head over. It was honestly one of the quietest campgrounds we’ve been to on a Friday night.

The bath house is newer and super clean- not a single creepy spider web in any corners.

On Verizon I have full bars so we haven’t tried the park WiFi but we’ve been able to use our chrome cast and two iPads off my cell phone with zero issues. Because it’s in a river valley the air tv single is terrible so we are glad to have the chrome cast with us- since the forecast called for a raining day.

    St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park

    Great family campground

Washington County, which manages campgrounds at both the Lake Elmo Park Reserve and St Croix Bluffs Regional Park, does a great job of maintaining campgrounds, trails, and bathroom facilities at both parks. St Croix Bluffs is right along the St. Croix river - in the summer you can hang out at the sandy beach on the river and in the fall there are many trails to enjoy fall color.

There are multiple areas in the modern campground - one section is for larger rigs that has 50 amp service and water at each site, most sites in the other loops have 20 or 30 amp electric service, and there are a few non-electric tent-only sites as well. The park prohibits both pets and alcohol! There is both a volleyball court and nice play structure in the modern campground.

We camped over MEA break (mid October) at site #4 this year and liked how close it was to the bathroom building. There is a lot of open space behind the parking/tent pad on this site, which made it a perfect spot for the kids to run and play without running close to other camper's sites. Sites 1, 2, 4, and 6 have similar amounts of open space behind the campsites.

In the past we've stayed here as part of a group in the group campsite. The group campsites at this park are some of the best I've stayed in - they include sand volleyball courts, a covered picnic shelter with electricity, a primitive toilet, and access to a large play structure nearby.

    St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park

    Great for group trip

This place has two group sites the one we stayed at Birch Hollow, hosts up to 20 campers and the other one up to 50. We absolutely loved this place, it was clean and separated from the other campers. Our site has a large picnic shelter with 6 picnic tables two grills and it’s own volleyball place. We also had a portable toilet included which was amazingly clean! The fire pit had two charming log benches and a ton of room for extra chairs. Most important we had electric hook ups and drinking water right on the site. I liked this spot because there is so much space to spread out, we had 5 tents set up and room to spare. A few down sides are that the nearest bathroom were about 1/4 mile down the road and they were closed:( so we kept having to drive even further into the park where the other campers stayed to use those bathrooms and showers...which were very clean but still it would be nice to have more than one portable toilet or at least have the closest bathhouse open... for the group sites. Another downside is YOU CANT BRING ALCOHOL OR PETS! I love my pooch but sadly she had to stay home with a dog sitter, and I love my piña colada’s but I could not enjoy them either... The beach was very nice to swim in, but was a bit crowded no surprise In mid July. And the trails were nice also... however, apparently there had been some bear sightings when we went, be ware of the bears I guess. We didn’t spot any on the trail but we did get visited by raccoons both nights so be sure to clean and put away food AND garbage before calling it a night. Will be coming back soon!

    Nelson's Landing RV Park

    Clean & tidy RV campground

Easy pull-through and back-in sites. We easily backed in to our site. There was a large open grassy area behind us that our two dogs enjoyed. Brand new fire rings/pits. Beautiful view of the bluffs. Walking distance to several restaurants. Don't miss the Nelson Creamery. Housed in an old historic building, I was expecting just an average ice cream/Wisconsin cheese store, but it was really lovely inside and it reminded me of something in France. There is a formal dining room area, wine cellar, and casual outdoor seating on a patio under vine covered canopy. Soups, sandwiches, pizzas, beer and wine available.

We only stayed for 2 nights, but the best part was the bathroom/shower house! There were 3-4 private shower/toilet/sink rooms with full locking doors. Everything is brand new and pristinely clean: white subway tile, white walls, white fixtures. Great water pressure and temperature. It reminded me of a fancy athletic club like Lifetime Fitness!

There is also a laundry facility in the building (again, everything new and clean).

Guide to Menomonie

Campsites near Menomonie, Wisconsin offer diverse terrain options across the Chippewa Valley region, with elevations ranging from 800-1,200 feet. Most campgrounds remain open from early May through October, with several experiencing high occupancy rates during summer weekends when temperatures typically range from 75-85°F. Seasonal considerations affect site availability and ground conditions throughout the camping season.

What to do

Paddle the Chippewa River: Campers staying at Eagle Ridge Campground can access river activities nearby. "It is a great place to stay if you want to float down the Chippewa River, Loopy's the bar in town will shuttle you to and from the campsite and drop you off with their tubes at the river!" notes Anna.

Explore wooded hiking trails: The Highland Ridge - Eau Galle Reservoir campground offers various hiking options. "Great campground and been here many times. Plenty of wildlife and can hear the owls talking to each other," says David G., highlighting the natural surroundings.

Visit local attractions: The area around Menomonie provides easy access to small-town amenities. "We went on a hike that showed off the wonderful bluffs along the Mississippi. As far as camping in Minnesota goes we prefer the options on the North Shore, but really enjoyed Frontenac and will be back to continue exploring," reports Peter R.

What campers like

Spacious, secluded sites: Many campers appreciate the privacy at Highland Ridge Campground in Spring Valley. "All sites are gravel/dirt (except for the ADA-accessible site), and most are very generous in size. Our site (7) sloped down but leveled out with plenty of room for our campervan at the bottom. All sites are wooded with trees providing separation/privacy between sites," explains Lee D.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The wooded settings provide chances to observe local fauna. "Great for hiking and kayaking/canoeing is near by," notes David E. about Highland Ridge - Eau Galle Reservoir, emphasizing its natural setting.

Well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of Lake Wissota State Park Campground. "Beautiful shaded campground with semi private sites. Nice beach that is a walkable distance from the sites. Lots of walking, biking and horse trails that are full of wild berries. Several stairways down to the lake, no beach at these spots but good for taking the dog in the water since they aren't allowed on the beach," explains Donella L.

What you should know

Varying site conditions: Terrain can differ significantly within the same campground. "Many sites are placed on on incline. They got the sites are pretty flat, but it's still on a hill. Not a whole lot to do at the campground. Trails are in poor shape," mentions John W. about Highland Ridge.

Water access considerations: Not all sites provide direct water access. "The lake is non-motor only," notes Shelly E. about Nugget Lake County Park, which offers a different experience than larger lakes in the region.

Seasonal fluctuations: Weather impacts site conditions throughout the year. "We decided to make a spontaneous camping trip one weekend and found ourselves at Frontenac. The cart-in site we were at was very spacious but wasn't as secluded as we would have hoped. We didn't feel claustrophobic by any means but we could see several other sites from ours. We went early in the year and maybe the summer growth solves that problem," explains Peter R.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with playgrounds: Some locations offer dedicated play areas. "There is a nice, modern playground," mentions Mary S. about Highland Ridge. This provides entertainment options beyond hiking and water activities.

Consider camper cabins: For families wanting a more comfortable pet friendly camping experience near Menomonie, Wisconsin, check availability of cabins. "The camper cabins are really nice. They have two rooms, a sleeping room and a front room. The sleeping room has 2 bunk beds (4 beds.) The front room has a mini fridge, coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, and a futon," shares Shelly E. about Nugget Lake County Park.

Find pet-friendly beaches: Willow River State Park Campground provides excellent hiking with water features. "Huge park, you can climb the cliffs surrounding the falls and there are plenty of trail both paved and unpaved," mentions Arielle P., highlighting the diverse terrain options.

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: Choose carefully when booking RV sites. "We've now camped here 4 times…This is a beautiful, densely wooded campground with fairly well spaced sites. Some sites on the short loop (28-38) are a bit smaller and slope down from the road, so be careful of the site's size when booking. Our 29' trailer would have been a challenging fit in some of those sites," advises Deb M. from Highland Ridge.

Utilities and hookups: Availability varies between campgrounds. "About a dozen sites with picnic tables on a grassy large circle. About half or more have electric hookups. Toilets are a short walk past the campground entrance," notes Dennis L. about Butternut Park, providing essential information for RV campers seeking pet-friendly camping options near Menomonie.

Internet connectivity: Working campers should research connection options. "If you've been anywhere in Minnesota or Wisconsin, you know about all the trees! As other reviews mention, this campground has a large grassy area - that gives a 100% clear obstruction for Starlink. We work full time, so this was important for us. HOWEVER, the other half of the campground is within a super treed area, so we got to pick!" shares Whistle P. about Eagle Ridge Campground.
