Several RV campgrounds surround Boonsboro, Maryland, providing convenient access to historic sites and natural attractions. Harpers Ferry Campground in nearby West Virginia offers big-rig friendly sites with full hookups including 50-amp service, operating from April through October. Brunswick Family Campground, located along the Potomac River, features level gravel sites with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections, open from late March to early November. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Williamsport provides full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service in a family-oriented setting. "Our site was a long gravel back-in with 50-amp FHU. The water hook-up is in a pit so it doesn't freeze," noted one RV camper about a nearby park, highlighting the region's winter-ready infrastructure at some locations.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across the region's RV campgrounds. Many parks close for winter, though Keystone RV Campground in Greencastle operates year-round for those needing off-season accommodations. Cell service can be spotty in mountain areas, with travelers reporting "very spotty cell service with T-Mobile" at some locations. Most RV parks in the region maintain clean dump stations, though availability of on-site sewer hookups differs between parks. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with dedicated dog areas at several locations. Navigation to certain campgrounds requires careful planning, as narrow roads and tight turns can challenge larger motorhomes, particularly at Harpers Ferry where "all roads were very narrow and winding. We did fine with the pup, but can't imagine trying to navigate a large motorhome through there."

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      The Cove Campground

      Excellent Campground

Was looking for a last-minute getaway on a busy weekend, and they seemed the best option.  I've always associated private campgrounds with crowding and sites on top of each other.  I couldn't have been more wrong about The Cove.  There is more wooded space between sites than in many National Parks.

Some sections are best accessed via 4WD, which I think is a great way to keep things from getting too crowded.

Such a huge diversity of types of sites, from lakeside to wooded, to open fields.  They have something for everyone.

The bathrooms are ok.  Other than the shower area and the reception, most toilets are pit toilets.  If you want to be walking distance to showers, make sure to book sites near them.  For most sites, it's going to be a hike or a drive.

And on top of that, they have a beach for the kids, boat rentals, and a range.

This was our first visit, but we will definitely be coming back.

      Hosack Run

Quiet & Dog friendly - 20minutes from Gettysburg Battfields

This pet friendly campground in Caledonia State Park is .8 miles from the larger Chinquapin campground (no pets), ranger station and swimming pool. Our site #171 was level, paved, full hook ups and next to modern clean bathrooms with flush toilets, warm showers and outside dish washing sinks. Many available sites with and without services on a Sunday in October. There were a good number of friendly, tidy, long term campers with large wall tents. (They allow 21 day stays after Labor Day)

      Green Ridge State Forest

      Great primitive camping

Beautiful area. Very primitive, which is great. Roads were fairly decent to the campsite. Didn't stay near the water and no mountain view but still nice. Had a nice trail into the woods.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

Fifteen Mile Campground — Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

      Safe, clean, and beautiful!

The campground is a nice size with enough space between sites to feel as though you have some privacy.

We reserved site 4 online but someone had set up there when we arrived. Site 6 was open and it had a better view anyway and was farther away from the toilets, so we didn’t mind.

The boat launch is right there which we planned to paddle board in the morning, but got rained out. The river looks really nice and clean though.

Tables and fire pits are a great size. We saw some gorgeous stars as there isn’t any light pollution.

It’s only half hour from Berkeley Springs, so fill up your spring water for free there and then come enjoy the campsite!

      Will definitely return.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

    Guide to Boonsboro

Camping near Boonsboro, Maryland offers access to both mountainous terrain in the Appalachian foothills and water recreation along the Potomac River. The area sits at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,800 feet, creating variable weather conditions throughout camping seasons. Seasonal temperature swings can be significant, with summer highs frequently reaching the 90s and winter lows regularly dropping below freezing in December through February.

    What to do

Historic exploration: 10 minutes from downtown Boonsboro to South Mountain State Battlefield where three Civil War battles were fought. Round Top Campground provides a strategic base for history buffs. "We were there to relax but also to explore the town and battlefields. Again the drive into town was short and had enough road side visuals to keep you from dwelling on the drive," notes one visitor who explored Gettysburg from their site.

Water activities: Cool off in summer temperatures along the Potomac River. "The Shanandoah River is just as beautiful. The showers could use a good cleaning but they are typical Campground showers perfect for the campground life," shared a repeat visitor to Brunswick Family Campground. This riverside location allows for swimming and water play directly from sites.

Trail hiking: C&O Canal towpath access provides miles of flat, shaded trails for walking or biking. "Situated on the C&O canal, so you could walk or bike for miles in either direction for hours! Harpers Ferry is only 6 miles away on the trail," reports a camper. Trail users can access multiple historic towns without moving their camp setup.

    What campers like

Riverside camping: Direct water access ranks high on camper satisfaction lists. At Harpers Ferry Campground, reviewers note the prime location: "All spots are along the water. We love walking and having a nice walk right from our campsite is a big bonus." These sites provide both recreation and natural cooling during summer heat.

Farm environments: Unique animal interactions create memorable stays at rural campgrounds. "Loved all the animals. It was pretty close to Gettysburg so there is alot to do, nice playground and open fields," explains a camper at Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm. Children can feed farm animals at designated times daily.

Water parks and recreation areas: Many campgrounds supplement natural attractions with built amenities. "There is a swimming pool, ball courts, fishing pond, mini golf (which was in pretty sad shape), and more. They have themed weekend events, live music, bingo, golf cart parades, and potluck," describes a camper who stayed at a family-oriented resort.

    What you should know

Train noise levels: Railroad proximity affects multiple campgrounds in the region. "The campground is adjacent to a very large, very busy train yard. It's not bothered me but you should be aware," warns a Brunswick Family Campground reviewer. Trains operate 24 hours with varying frequency; most affected campsites are at Harpers Ferry and Brunswick.

Seasonal facility limitations: Water parks and amenities often close earlier than camping areas. "We camped here in May for Memorial Day weekend. We usually avoid holidays but gave this campground a try. It was pretty full and everyone seemed to have a golf cart," shares a visitor at Drummer Boy Camping Resort. Call ahead to confirm specific amenity availability.

Variable site conditions: Leveling challenges exist at several campgrounds. "My site had a slight slope, but was easily overcome using additional blocks on the low side to get the trailer level," notes a camper at Bull Run Regional Park. Many sites throughout the region require leveling blocks, particularly in older established campgrounds.

    Tips for camping with families

Water feature selection: Choose campgrounds with swimming options during summer months. "The pool with the slide was very clean. We would definitely go back to this place again despite the couple of cons," shares a family who found Drummer Boy Resort's water features worth the trip despite other limitations.

Activity schedules: Check weekend programming when making reservations. "They have themed weekend events, live music, bingo, golf cart parades, and potluck," notes a reviewer. Many campgrounds schedule most activities for Friday evening through Sunday morning.

Space considerations: Book sites away from main roads for safer play areas. "The sites are nicely spread out, clean, wooded, and in the area we are in are spaced nicely," reports a family at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park. Family-friendly campgrounds often designate quiet zones separate from activity centers.

    Tips from RVers

Elevation and road challenges: Scout your route before arrival with a tow vehicle. "All roads were very narrow and winding. We did fine with the pup, but can't imagine trying to navigate a large motorhome through there," cautions a reviewer about approaches to Harpers Ferry.

Site selection strategy: Request pull-through sites when available for easier setup. "We were in a transient section in the back of the park with long pull-thrus (about 100-feet long) that comfortably fit our RV and car," explains a camper about their experience at a larger resort-style campground.

Utility placements: Check hookup locations before backing in. "The sewer hookup was inconveniently placed about six inches above the ground which meant that it would not drain properly," warns an RV camper who found drainage challenges at their site.
