Boothbay Craft Brewery & RV Resort

Great place to camp near a fun Maine town

This campground has expanded over the years from a handful of pull-thru sites(1-5) to now a larger camping section with back-in sites. Campsites are gravel with 30/50-amp full hook-ups. There is a no hook-up Harvest Host site, if you are a member and want to stay one night. There is a laundry and bathhouse that has private restrooms and showers. The high speed wifi worked great. Other amenities include a dump station, common picnic area, and propane fill-up. We find the campsites are pretty close with not a lot of privacy between them but the advantage of camping here is being at the brewery and close to downtown Boothbay Harbor. The brewery offers great food ranging from BBQ to wood fired pizza and has a good selection of beers and also offers wine. The outside patio is a fun place to hang out when the weather is nice but they also have an inside eating area that is super cozy. We love just having a short walk home after a pizza and couple of beers. Boothbay Harbor is a great coastal Maine town with lots of shopping and restaurants. We signed up for a boat tour that took us around the harbor and out to a lighthouse. The tour was narrated and a fun way to spend an afternoon. We love the local nature preserves for hiking and don’t miss the trools at the botanical garden. Bet’s Fish Fry is delicious for fish and chips, but beware the hours are very limited so check before you go.

      Bearcamp River Campground

      Bearcamp River Campground

Bear camp River campground is a great place to camp for a weekend or be a seasonal. You can walk 6/10 of a mile to the covered bridge nearby and float right down to the beach at the campground or you can start on one side of the campground and float to the other via river for a good 30 minute float!! You get to Camp right on the Riverside. Owners (Mike and Tabby ) are great. Good place for the kids to run around and explore. The Camp store has sweatshirts and sweatpants , candy and snacks ,s’mores kits, and much much more.  They also  sell wood and ice on site. There is also hot showers for free, and bathrooms. Two thumbs up from this happy camper.

      Sea-Vu West Premier RV Resort

      Pleasantly surprised.

This campground is mostly seasonal, privately owned park models, but has 45 spaces for RV’s. I was a little skeptical about staying at this campground with so many park models and seasonals but was pleasantly surprised at how nice, clean, and tidy all the sites were. They obviously take pride in how things look because the grounds and campsites were very well-kept.

All campsites are 50/30-amp full hook-up with level gravel pads with grassy patios, a picnic table, and fire pit. We stayed in site#702 which was long enough for our 45’ motorhome and tow car. All the utilities were easy to reach and the electric worked well. The only problem was that we were parked under a large oak tree that was profusely shedding large acorns. There are some sites that are in the open which I would definitely choose, if I came back in the fall. The campground is gated which is a nice feature. It is located a mile or so off Route 1 which means you don’t get the road noise and traffic, but still conveniently located near shops and restaurants.

One nice feature are the shaded walking trails in the park. While they are not super long, it is a nice change from walking the roads (which are paved). Other amenities include a decent size swimming pool (closed while we were there), a basketball court, playground, laundry, and camp store.  I thought it was a little expensive at $75/night (for full hook-up) at the end of the season, especially since the pool was closed.

      Sun Outdoors Wells Beach

Tight sites and expensive, busy area along the Maine coast

We stopped here in the summer to check out the coastal towns in southern Maine. There are many campgrounds in the area and we chose this one because they had a 25% off coupon (on a 7-night stay) which gave us the best nightly price in the area. However, the nightly rate was still$74/night, one reason being they charge a “resort fee” of$15/day which is ridiculous. This is a typical resort-style campground with lots of amenities (most of which we never use). But, for some people, this is a destination campground because of all the amenities- a large heated swimming pool, basketball courts, sand volleyball, bocce, fitness center, two playgrounds, 18-hole minigolf (that you pay extra for), and more.

The campsites in the front of the park are sandwiched between the swimming pool and Route 1 which is very busy and noisy. Campsites in the far back portion of the campground are shaded and a much quieter section. Camping pads and patios are a mix of gravel and sand. Many sites have shade and some have an astroturf patio (I think those are “premium” sites). Our campsite was in the middle section which was fairly quiet but the sites are close together with no privacy. The site was a long and level pull thru with a gravel pad and gravel/sand patio. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit.

There is a tent-only section and they have renal cabins. There is lots to do for families in the area including the beach and amusement and water parks. Restaurants of all sorts are nearby. You can easily walk to Congdon’s Donuts which is a Maine classic.

      Seacoast Camping and RV Resort

      Nice Campground, Love the area!

This is a nice, clean, well-maintained campground for RV and tenting. The campground is located on Route 1 which means you are convenient to a lot of things but there is lots of traffic. Half the campground is seasonal/long term campers and the other side is mostly transients. The roads and campsites are fine crushed gravel with nice grassy patios. The campground is very well maintained (the best part being that the mower collects they cut the grass so no clippings get tracked in your camper). There are some mature trees that provide shade but don’t impede navigating in and out of sites or impacting slide outs.

Campsites range from tent with water/electric to RV water/electric and RV full hook-up 50-amp and full hook-up 30-amp. There are three bathhouses on the property (one of which has a dishwashing sink) and laundry. Tent sites 50-55 are in an are set away from RV sites and more private. They are also close to a large bathhouse with multiple toilets and showers. Tent sites 90-100 are across from a large playground which can be quite chaotic, but if you have kids, this is a great spot.

Our site (#147) was a long pull-thru with a descent amount of space between our neighbors. We got about half a dozen over-the-air channels (one being a major network station) and were able to connect with eastern arc satellites with our Dish Satellite. The 50A electric was good as was the water pressure.

The campground does not have much in the way of amenities except for a game room, basketball court, and playground. The game room is pretty cool with lots of arcade-style games, a pool table, foosball, and table tennis. While we were there, they just finished putting in all new playground equipment and enlarged the size making it really big and a hit with the kids in the park. Once convenience is that maintenance picks up garbage at your site (between 8am– 3pm). Unfortunately, people leave them out after hours and animals got into them and scattered garbage everywhere.  We've stayed here before and always enjoy being in the area as it is close to the fun cities of Portsmouth and Newburyport.

      Jigger Johnson Campground

      Location Location Location

This is our favorite campground on the Kanc. Lots of great hiking and scenic views. Close to Conway as well. Leaf peeping season will find you stuck in traffic. Recommend going afterwards. JJ closes for the season on October 12th.

Boothbay Craft Brewery & RV Resort

      Best brewery and glamping spot

This is one of our favorite campgrounds in the region. Close to the Botanical Gardens and the lovely historic town of Boothbay. The campground is small and well appointed with a super clean bath house and laundry room. Showers are free and the water is hot. Tasty beers and great food available at the brewery, though the brewery isn’t open on Monday- Wednesday.

Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach

      Good for kids

I have stayed in about 20 campgrounds in the past two months and this was by far the loudest despite being pretty empty. Kids screeching and screaming for about 6 hours a day, including weekdays. Had one come knocking on my door while I was working to try and sell keychains. Some uncontrollable dogs in our loop as well. Despite the lack of peace, the campground itself was in good shape and had a lot of amenities.

    Guide to Bar Mills

Bar Mills offers pet-friendly camping between the Saco River and Route 202 in southern Maine. Located 15 miles west of Portland, the area features a combination of wooded sites and waterfront locations. Campgrounds typically open from May through mid-October with peak season lasting from late June through Labor Day. Weather remains moderate with daytime summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and cooler evenings in the 50-60°F range.

    What to do

Kayaking and canoeing on natural waterways: Wild Duck Adult Campground provides access to Scarborough Marsh for paddling enthusiasts. "This quiet campground is about a mile from the Eastern Trail through the Scarborough Marsh," notes Kevin W. "It is within a mile of the Audubon center office, where you can either put in your own kayak/canoe or rent one."

Visit Old Orchard Beach: Paradise Park Resort offers convenient shuttle service to the beach and pier. "Walking distance to Old Orchard Beach, this campground has something for everyone. A shuttle will take you to the town beach or you can walk/ride bikes the .25 miles," explains Jessica S. The resort maintains multiple activities onsite including "fishing, 2 pools, a dog park, and a snack shack."

Explore Kennebunkport: Sandy Pines Campground provides a base for visiting this historic coastal town. "Sandy Pines is located a very short bike ride from Cape Porpoise, home of Nunann's Restaurant, Mussette, Lost Fire and Pier 77. Some of the best food in the area without having to deal with the crushing crowds of the Kennebunkport scene," shares Chris.

Mountain biking on local preserves: The area offers multiple trail systems for cyclists. "For those so inclined, there is great mountain biking either through the Tyler Preserve down to Cape Porpoise or North through the Emmitt Smith Preserve," recommends Joe R. from Sandy Pines Campground.

    What campers like

Adults-only camping environment: Wild Duck Adult Campground & RV Park provides a quieter experience without children. "This adult only campground is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of birds and the trees being the main thing you hear - it is quite relaxing," writes Heather C. "The trees are quite tall and create a lovely canopy overhead."

Proximity to Eastern Trail: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Bar Mills connect to this multi-use pathway. "My wife and I enjoy riding our bikes on rail trails. This quiet campground is about a mile from the Eastern Trail through the Scarborough Marsh," notes Kevin W. about Wild Duck Adult Campground.

Clean facilities and grounds: Bayley's Camping Resort maintains high standards for bathrooms and common areas. "This park has so many amenities and things to do that it is a destination in itself and you and your kids will be busy the entire time. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the park is very clean and well-maintained," explains Nancy W.

Beach access options: Old Orchard Beach Campground offers trolley service to avoid parking hassles. "Old Orchard Beach is a fun, family-oriented campground located in the fun little beach town of Old Orchard Beach. The best thing is there is a trolley that takes you from the campground to the beach so you don't have to deal with parking," notes Nancy W.

    What you should know

Mosquitoes can be intense: Bug protection is essential, especially near marsh areas. "The only negative of this place was the mosquitoes. They were TERRIBLE. In the time it took after we parked the camper, to when I could dig the bug spray out of our truck I was covered in bites," warns Megan W. about Wild Duck Adult Campground.

Train noise at some locations: Wild Acres Sun RV Resort has tracks nearby that may affect sleep. "The campground map is missing the train tracks that are between the campground and the ocean. The trains all blow their horn and you will hear it if your at one of the site 'by the ocean'," warns Bryan.

Varying levels of privacy between sites: Site selection matters for those seeking seclusion. "Depending on your site location you may get more privacy than if you stay in the big rig sites. The wooded sites tend to be more private and less loud. Staying by any of the pools will be louder," advises Claire T. about Bayley's Camping Resort.

Seasonal variations in crowd levels: Shoulder seasons offer quieter experiences. "We visited in the off-season but can only imagine the park gets pretty busy especially in the front section where the swimming pool, arcade, camp store, and other activities are located," observes Nancy W. about Old Orchard Beach Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with multiple pool options: Bayley's Camping Resort separates adult and child swimming areas. "There is a kids pool and a pool for the adults only w/bar. A pond for fishing, there are kayaks etc... Shower throughout and I might add very clean," shares Christopher S.

Consider activity calendars: Paradise Park Resort schedules family-friendly events. "This campground is very cute, oriented to families and couples. There are multiple pools and playgrounds. One pool has a hot tub for kids. There's also paddleboats available to rent," notes Tonisha T.

Evaluate tent-friendly locations: Some resorts better accommodate RVs than tents. "The most significant con was that this campground is truly only for RV camping. Us tent campers were on sites with zero trees. It almost felt as if they were trying to dissuade tent campers from coming here," cautions Tim S. about Sandy Pines Campground.

Explore shoulder season camping: Nathan S. recommends Paradise Park Resort during less crowded times: "We're typically state park campers, but decided to stay 2 nights at a resort campground to recharge and be close to the beach. We had a great experience! Awesome amenities, close to the beach (they offer a shuttle too) and great pool."

    Tips from RVers

Book wooded sites for shade: Old Orchard Beach Campground offers varied site types. "We liked the sections in the back (Bear Brook and Black Forest) which are set away from the entrance and the majority of activities," suggests Nancy W.

Expect tighter spacing at peak times: Holiday weekends can feel crowded. "More of a festival than an RV resort. Extremely crowded, close sites, and heavy car traffic in walking and bike areas. Sun night was way quieter than Fri and Sat night," notes David A. about Wild Acres Sun RV Resort.

Reserve premium sites early: Waterfront locations fill quickly at popular campgrounds. "We stayed on a spot by the water, that was totally worth the upgrade," states Julie C. about Wassamki Springs Campground.

Pack extension cords and hoses: Utility placement varies by campground. "The utilities were in the far back of the site so make sure you have long enough hoses," advises Nancy W. about Wassamki Springs. Utility boxes at some locations may require additional length to reach your connection points.
