Fort Pickens Campground — Gulf Islands National Seashore

      Good but not very private

We went tent camping for two nights with our pups at Fort Pickens and we really did enjoy it. The campground was nice and clean. They had nice showers and potties as well. The showers in the RV section have better shower heads btw. The beaches are gorgeous! A tip for travelers with pets, FL does not allow dogs on their beaches accept in specific "dog park" locations. Our dogs are not.. eh, normal .. so we ended up driving down to a private beach so they could enjoy the ocean. There is a lot of night life but We decided to skip that this trip. We enjoyed the beaches in the park at night and i highly recommend it! All in all we enjoyed our trip but we probably won't be back to Fort Pickens campground. The sites are very close together and we had a very nosey and drunk neighbor who really wanted to chat. We camp to get away from people, just saying. We were also bothered by RV and truck lights shining directly into our tent both nights from people driving through the campground. Not the best but we enjoyed camping at the beach.

      A Cozy Corner RV Lodge

      Quaint RV Park!

Easy check in online. FHU-some shade, level concrete pad, picnic table. Easily backed in our 40 ft Montana. Very clean bathrooms, didn’t use just looked. Washer and dryer, and nice dog park. Close to lots of stores and restaurants, 20-30 min from beaches depending on traffic. Some traffic noise, since it’s next to a main road.

      River's Edge RV Campground

      Swampy!

We arrived and everything was dry. The next morning, our site had literally turned into a pond. By the time I finished packing up to leave, I literally looked like I jumped in the river with all of my clothes on. Haha I guess that’s camping in Florida for ya. The park was nice overall. The bathrooms were okay. Full hookups and lots of trees so our service was a little spotty.

      Pelican Palms RV Park

      Easy spot off the highway.

This camp ground is growing so there was quite a bit of construction debris around, but looking past that. This spot is literally right off Hwy 10 at exit 26 making it convenient for travelers. I would not recommend this campsite for true "camping". On ground fires are not allowed and there are no trails or walking areas. There is a small dog park but it is not really a "park". The Pool looked nice, but was closed. Nice shower house with great shower pressure. Probably 50/50 on folks living there and those just stopping through. I stayed 3 nights during the week, it was very quiet. The price is great for the location close to beaches, rivers and city. Not the prettiest camp ground, but if you just want to park your rig while you hit the beach, good choice.

    Guide to Milton

Camping opportunities near Milton, Florida provide excellent options for pet owners with seasonal considerations affecting the experience. Milton receives 67 inches of annual rainfall with peak precipitation during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F. Winter temperatures typically range from 40-65°F, making November through April optimal for outdoor activities with pets.

    What to do

River recreation access: Blackwater River State Park Campground connects campers to multiple water-based activities. "The river and the surrounds are super quiet, peaceful and beautiful. Tubing, kayaking canoeing are all super here as is the bike riding, if you know where to go," shares jim, who recommends following "the road to the boat ramp just north of the entrance."

Dog exercise options: The Hideaway Retreat features shoreline areas specifically designated for canine guests. "You can't have a campfire at your site but there is a charming 'community' fire pit available, with cornhole and some other games surrounding it," notes Katie N. The shallow water access is particularly beneficial for dogs learning to swim as "the depth and calmness are perfect."

Historical exploration: Fort Pickens Campground offers both camping and educational opportunities approximately 30 miles from Milton. "Venturing into the fort you will find an amazing seafood market called Joe Patti's, the Pensacola Bay Brewery, and the Naval Aviation Museum (which is free)," says one visitor, with another adding that "campsites are a short ¼ mile from the gorgeous beaches."

    What campers like

Shaded campsites: Many campers appreciate the natural canopy at certain Milton-area campgrounds. At The Hideaway Retreat, "the numerous trees on the property" provide welcome relief from summer heat. "What sets this campground apart is the numerous trees on the property. I visited on a cool, cloudy day in February, but I imagine the shade from the trees would be very welcome in the summer."

Clean facilities: Blackwater River State Park Campground maintains high standards for bathrooms and amenities. "Bathrooms were clean & warm," writes Dani M., while another camper notes, "Very nice campground. Secluded & not many campers when we went (February)." Donna G. adds, "Hospitable staff, nice trails, great scenery and wildlife, clean restrooms with great water temperature and pressure."

Winter camping comfort: Seasonal advantages include fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures. "This campground is peaceful, sandbar is clean," according to Tammy S. Another camper shares, "The campground itself is very well-maintained with nice level pads and full hook ups," though they note "there's quite a bit of air traffic noise with helicopters and planes flying overhead."

    What you should know

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects several campgrounds in different ways. At Emerald Beach RV Park, visitors should be aware that "ATT and TMobile service bad but not park's fault. However, their WiFi was almost useless." Others mention that "FL98 is an incredibly dangerous highway and driving in/out of the campgrounds with or without a trailer is horrendous."

Site spacing variations: Campsite size and privacy differ significantly between locations. The Hideaway Retreat campers note "the sites are VERY small - you are packed in like sardines - do not expect any privacy whatsoever." Similarly at another campground, "sites are pretty close together and some of the amenities like the mini golf course need to be updated."

Beach access realities: Water access quality varies by location. Several campgrounds advertise beach access, but as one camper clarifies, "The campground is technically not in a traditional beach such as Miramar or Clearwater; rather, it's a small bay front area with a small man-made beach area adjacent a pier out into the bay."

    Tips for camping with families

Dog park amenities: Milton-Gulf Pines KOA offers specific facilities for four-legged family members. "Fenced in dog yard. The staff is super helpful and friendly!" reports Carolin C. Another visitor adds, "Great staff. Pool was nice! Great little putt putt area for kids. Spots are good sized, although we had a premium spot for the patio & grill."

Activity planning: When visiting with children, consider campgrounds with structured recreation. "We camped here over Memorial weekend and we had a great time. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The campground store came in handy on more than one occasion. We had a lot of fun playing putt putt and swimming in the pool," shares Tonya.

Waterpark options: For families seeking additional water recreation beyond beaches, Splash RV Resort & Waterpark offers multiple attractions. "The lazy river and waterslides were her favorite. We especially liked the armband so the kids were able to purchase food, drinks, game tokens for the arcade," explains one grandmother, who adds that "the karaoke was also a lot of fun, and the foam party was a blast to watch."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: RVers should research site specifications before booking. "Sites are at 90 degree angle and hard to get into for big rigs, but doable," notes James R. at Milton-Gulf Pines KOA. Another RVer mentions that "there was a bit of an incline to get into it which my hitch took a big chunk of concrete out of."

Pet washing facilities: Multiple campgrounds provide pet cleaning stations. "Splash RV Resort accommodates pets with a spacious dog park featuring a dog washing station," while Emerald Beach RV Park has reviewers mentioning they "give Emerald RV Park a Five Star rating" specifically noting the pet-friendly atmosphere.

Seasonal booking advice: Peak season requires advance reservations at most pet-friendly campgrounds. "Reservations can be made online (and should be made early if you plan on coming during the busy spring and summer seasons)," advises one camper, with another noting "It is best to check the park's website before your visit because sometimes they have to close the road to the campground due to sand and water on the roads."
