Within the Lower Escambia River Water Management Area, Cotton Lake provides free camping for up to seven days with advance reservations required. The Northwest Florida Water Management District maintains four RV sites and additional tent spots accessible by road, boat, or on foot. Most sites accommodate big rigs, though site 3 presents width challenges for larger vehicles.
The campground operates as dry camping with no water or electrical hookups. Each site includes a picnic table and grill, with small pavilions being added during recent improvements. A well-maintained porta potty serves the area. Campers report that sites sit fairly close together, and three of the four spots typically fill during peak periods. Road access remains good year-round, though flooding can occasionally make the entrance impassable during heavy rains.
Construction activity along Cotton Lake Road generates noise that extends into evening hours, and a nearby wood processing facility contributes additional industrial sounds. Fly populations can be heavy during certain seasons. Rachel E. notes "Lots of housing construction going on all down Cotton Lake Road" that affects the camping atmosphere.
The campground works well for self-sufficient campers with adequate water storage who don't mind basic facilities and some ambient noise from surrounding development.
