Camping near Talbott, Tennessee spans a wide range of options, from tent and RV sites with full hookups to cabin accommodations, with multiple campgrounds within easy driving distance. Panther Creek State Park Campground provides tent and RV sites with full hookups approximately 15 miles north of Talbott, while Cherokee Dam Campground offers water access with electric hookups about 10 miles to the northeast. Several Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) managed properties dot the region, including Douglas Dam Tailwater and Douglas Dam Headwater campgrounds. The camping landscape features a mix of state park facilities, TVA recreation areas, and private RV resorts, with options ranging from basic tent sites to premium RV pads and even cabin accommodations at places like Greenbrier Campground.

Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally with limited winter availability. The region experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable camping conditions. "This park is less than 10 minutes from I-81, so very convenient for a one night stop over," noted one camper about Panther Creek State Park. Road access to established campgrounds is generally good, though some sites have length restrictions that limit larger RVs. Visitors should check individual campground regulations as alcohol policies vary, with state parks typically prohibiting alcohol while private campgrounds often allow it. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months and weekends when waterfront sites fill quickly. Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout the area.

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw in the region, with several campgrounds offering direct access to Cherokee Lake and other bodies of water. Campers consistently highlight the recreational opportunities beyond camping, with one visitor stating that Panther Creek has "great hiking trails, pool, playground fire pits and so much more!" Mountain biking receives particular praise at Panther Creek, where an extensive trail network attracts enthusiasts. Wildlife sightings are common, with reviewers mentioning deer, raccoons, and even wild turkeys. While most campgrounds provide basic amenities including showers, toilets and hookups, the quality of facilities varies. Several reviewers mentioned cleanliness as an important factor, with some campgrounds maintaining spotless bathhouses while others received criticism for inadequate maintenance.

Camp Margaritaville RV Resort & Lodge

Showers give you maybe 20 seconds of warm ish water. The. Pretty much tap temps. Amazingly it’s still completely fogs up the bathhouse mirrors due to the inadequate exhaust. That may. Be due to the temp, exhaust, and venting strings are easily manipulated by one of the million children in the “Resort”. It’s not a resort in any way. It’s a campground that has really nice pads. Marginal hookups. Lots and lots and lots of bears. Big BIG bears. I’m a bear hunter. There isn’t one I’ve seen that isn’t a legit Pope and Young. The toilets are clean. The floor and showers are gross. The lazy river is cold. Hot tube warm. If you are a camper spending $250 a night and a resort fee per person, you still don’t get given a towel to use the pool. Front desk actually said the towels were NOT for campers but for “ hotel resort” guest. So why am I paying the fee? We stayed here because it was a Margaretaville property. There are many other nicer and cheaper options in town. It’s expensive. The bar car does not exist. There is wood delivery. But it’s a bundle of twigs for $10. It is dry. The food is Sysco crap and the inside bars are just part of the kids arcade or cafeteria. Live music was super strange. The guy literally was standing in the doorway to the cafeteria bar. Don’t waste your money here. If you do anyway, plan on bears digging thru your stuff every night. Kids? Dogs? And Bears……not good.

      Twin Creek RV Resort

Great Creekside Site and Friendly Staff

We took US-321 into the back side of Gatlinburg to avoid the downtown craziness. RV Life GPS guided us directly to Twin Creek RV Resort, while Waze suggested a few shortcuts that we wisely passed on. The campground (CG) entrance was a little tight and downhill, but we had no trouble getting to the office for check-in. One of the very friendly and helpful staff members escorted us to back-in site 14, where backing in was easy. We wanted to lower our toy hauler patio to enjoy the creek running behind the sites, and the staff kindly allowed us to park our F-450 in site 38 across the road to give us more room. Our site had a nice patio area with a long bench, picnic table, and nearby fire pit. CG Wi-Fi was so-so at 6.17 Mbps download. Verizon had 2 bars and T-Mobile had 3 bars, while our T-Mobile Home Internet delivered a respectable 106 Mbps download. There was considerable road noise from US-321, especially during daylight hours, although evenings were noticeably quieter. The fenced dog park was small, but there was plenty of room around the CG to walk our pup. Overall, we enjoyed our creekside site, the helpful staff, and the convenient location away from the busiest part of Gatlinburg.

Elkmont Campground — Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Beautiful spot in the smoky mountains. State park style amenities, no showers. No hookups. Very busy very open campground. Nice that some trails are walking distance from campground. I would not camp here again as I prefer more separation and privacy. No cell service. STARLINK is usable but obstructed with tree canopy

      Winngray Family Campground

      Great family run campground

This campground has a great location in maggie valley, close to Waynesville with plenty to do in close proximity. While it is a traditional campground, they have very competitive rates for weekly and monthly stays. For us its the perfect getaway destination for the summers and fall. The staff is super welcomming and friendly. You find a cute creek on the backside of of the campground with trout as some fisherman told me. The staff takes pride in all the flowers, landscaping and seasonal decorations. Also nice to know is you are not being looked down to with an older camper. As long as your rig is decent and functional you are admitted.

      Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg KOA Campground

      Busy but Nice

This worked well for us while we were visiting Dollywood in our trailer, but we wouldn't stay here if we had been in a different type of site. Cons: Unless you have a site up against the river or on patriot park, you are packed in VERY TIGHT with other people, sometimes with your sliders only a foot or two away from your neighbor's sliders. We were in a site that was "on patriot park", but the few first sites of that type are really just behind the trolley parking lot and pick up with a path behind you (including ours). People are on the other side of the fence walking about two feet behind you all day and pretty late in to the night. Pros: There are lot of trees and campground is very pretty. Super close to Dollywood and other Pigeon Forge points of interest.

      Two Rivers Landing RV Resort

      Premium Campground

This is a really nice place, my only issue is that I think $110 with Good Sam is too expensive. I needed a place to stay, so I did. They have laundry and restrooms but I didn't use them.

    Guide to Talbott

Camping spots near Talbott, Tennessee offer diverse terrain between elevations of 1,000 to 1,400 feet in the foothills of the Appalachians. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 85°F from June through August, while spring brings significant rainfall averaging 4-5 inches monthly. Most campgrounds within 30 miles of Talbott have gravel sites with varying degrees of shade coverage.

    What to do

Mountain biking trails: 60+ miles at Panther Creek State Park Campground, just 15 miles north of Talbott. "The mountain biking was so much fun we didn't care! Hiking and biking was an A+. Great place for families because of the surrounding wooded activities," reports one camper. The park offers trails for various skill levels with especially good intermediate routes.

Historic exploration: 1930s buildings at Elkmont Campground in the Smoky Mountains. "One of the more intriguing areas to explore at Elkmont is the Daisy Town ghost town. Once you've set up camp, walk or drive down the road toward the Little River and Jakes Creek trails," notes a visitor. These historic vacation homes date back to the early 20th century with some open for exploration.

Kayaking and water sports: multiple access points on Cherokee Lake, particularly at Cherokee Dam Campground. "The lake is great to kayak. The store is well stocked," mentions a camper. Rental equipment available on-site from April through October with costs ranging from $25-40 per day depending on watercraft type.

    What campers like

Private bathroom facilities: Several campgrounds offer upgraded restroom experiences. At Greenbrier Campground, "the bath house appeared to be newer, and will trump your home facilities in many cases! Within the bath house, there are several private doors leading to your own 3 piece bath with shelving and granite counters with outlets, and a stunning double shower."

Riverside camping sites: Many visitors highlight the sound of flowing water as a major benefit. "The campground had just reopened from being shutdown due to Covid, so the place was extremely clean. The camp hosts were so awesome, I feel like they take great care of the campground all year," noted a camper about Cherokee Dam campground, adding "there are some really great lakefront sites here, and the tent spots are great."

Less crowded alternatives: For those seeking quieter experiences than the main Smoky Mountain campgrounds. "Cosby Campground is amazing! Most sites are walk up, so you don't need a reservation, and there are probably 100+ sites, so even during the busiest of times you can find a good site. Each site has plenty of space too, so you're not on top of the site next to you," explains one visitor.

    What you should know

Seasonal availability: Many campgrounds near Talbott close during winter months. The Douglas Dam Headwater Campground operates from "mid April to late October" while others like Cherokee Dam run from "March 18 to November 7," making shoulder season visits optimal for both weather and availability.

Limited shower facilities: Even at developed campgrounds, shower access may be restricted. "The bathhouses are kept clean, and have some nice pavilions for gatherings. Though if you come in the summer look out for ticks. Panther Creek is notorious for ticks. I pulled 6 off of me in one day," warns a regular visitor to the area.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience unexpected noise sources. At Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg KOA, "When the noise of the amusement parks and traffic dies down you get about an hour of peace before the food warehouse on the other side (about 50 yds) starts loading trucks non stop through the night. We were awakened every night at 1 am or later."

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: multiple access points for water recreation. At Anchor Down RV Resort, "The beach area they've constructed on the lake is INSANE! So so nice! There's a giant blow up slide leading into the lake. There's a super cute and fun dog park, arcade room, very nice pool area, food truck with anything you could want to eat."

Evening activities: ranger programs at certain campgrounds enhance educational experiences. "On Fridays they have special Ranger programs. We were lucky enough to learn about moon-shining from guys on the moonshiner TV show. It was very interesting!" reports a visitor to Cosby Campground.

Recreation beyond hiking: Many campgrounds offer additional amenities. "Panther Creek State Park has a great campground for families to spend time at. For a lesser known state park, they have a lot of amenities. Playgrounds, hiking, horseback trails, mountain bike trails, tennis courts, disc golf, baseball field, volleyball, lake access, swimming pool."

    Tips from RVers

Reservation strategies: plan well ahead for premium waterfront sites. For Anchor Down RV Resort, "It is so hard to get a reservation here, so we decided to take what we could get so we could try it out! A tip to get reservations! Call and put your name on a waiting list for the dates you need. If they have cancellations, they call the people on the list instead of releasing the dates on the website!"

Leveling needs: Many campgrounds in the area have sloped sites. "Sites were part gravel and grassy. We were in a pull through with full hook ups. The area is so nice and if you were looking for things to do, it's close to Pigeon Forge and not terribly far from Gatlinburg. Without the hustle and bustle," notes a camper at Dumplin Valley Farm RV Park.

Accessibility considerations: Wheelchair-accessible options exist but are limited. "We've stayed here numerous times in 2020 as it is close to our home. We are disabled & their disabled spots are some of the very best," reports a regular at Cherokee Dam campground, pointing out that accessible sites often book quickly during prime season.
