Newport-Smoky Mountains KOA

RV travelers heading to the Smokies will find Newport-Smoky Mountains KOA positioned just off I-40, providing a convenient overnight stop or base camp for exploring the region. The campground accommodates rigs up to 60 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections at each site.

Most sites feature gravel surfaces rather than concrete pads, which several campers note can present leveling challenges. The access road leading into the campground has drawn mixed reviews, with some visitors reporting potholes and narrow conditions that require careful navigation. Road noise from I-40 carries into parts of the campground, though reviewers mention it's less intrusive than expected for the proximity to the interstate.

The facility maintains clean restrooms and showers with good water pressure. A fenced dog park provides space for pets to exercise, and the camp store stocks essentials including firewood and propane. Sara M. describes it as a "clean, mowed grass, gravel roads, basic campground without frills." WiFi is available, though cellular service varies by carrier with AT&T reportedly stronger than T-Mobile.

The campground operates year-round and accepts reservations. For additional camping options in the area, consider camping spots around Cosby or nearby alternatives like Tana-See Campground. Book ahead during peak travel seasons when motorcycle rallies and RV groups frequent the area.

Visitors often highlighted clean facilities and good amenities, but several guests reported problems with unlevel gravel sites. Highway noise affects tent campers more than RV users, though recent reviews suggest improvements under new ownership.

Turn-n-burn

Overnight stop that was quieter than expected for so close to I40. Not a fan of the access road and condition- narrow and a couple potholes swallowed up my left front; too narrow a road to avoid. Close to Walmart and Tractor Supply- always a plus. We hit up Copper Ridge Tavern and Grill- good service, small menu.

Well-kept

Clean, mowed grass, gravel roads, basic campground without frills. It’s quiet, well off the highway, good camp store, friendly helpful staff. We will come here again when out this way.

Okay for one night

We just stopped here overnight. We arrived after dark and had a pull in site that was really unlevel. They had a nice little fenced in dog area. Our site had some trash on it and the road noise was loud, but for just an overnight it was adequate. There seemed to be a lot of permanent trailers here. A sign says it's under new ownership so hopefully they are fixing it up a little. Unfortunately, they don't give a KOA discount and the price ended up being the same as the East Gatlinburg KOA not far away that was much, much nicer.

Smaller KOA Nestled in The Smokies

Newport KOA is conveniently located near I-40 North East of Knoxville, TN.

This campground hosts standard RV Sites and Cabin Sites. They have bathrooms, a pool, WiFi, a dog park, firewood for sale, propane, and more. They have lots of travelers coming through from races and for motorcycle clubs, and RV rallies.

We found this location because we had difficulty finding camping locations in the area and we were pleasantly surprised to see this pretty park!

We had decent AT&T cellular service but TMobile was not as good. We were able to stream and work efficiently.

There are caverns nearby to go explore and of course it’s in the Smokies!

Loud

Location is convenient but definitely more suited for campers than tents. Highway traffic noise (semis, engine braking) is LOUD...might be ok in a camper but not in a tent. Sites are small, close together and mostly gravel. Facilities are nice and clean.

KOA

Stayed here 2 nights on our way to Nashville. It rained the whole time-of course not the campgrounds fault but we didn’t get to use any facilities. bathrooms were kept clean in spite of rain. good shower with good water pressure. no concrete pads and site was small and all gravel so not level.
