Washington Crossing State Park - TEMP CLOSED FOR 2024

      Revolutionary History near Delaware River

Nestled along the picturesque Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of those destinations where American history practically jumps out from behind every tree. This sprawling, beautifully preserved historic park commemorates George Washington's daring Christmas night crossing of the Delaware in 1776, with charming colonial buildings, expansive green spaces, shaded walking paths and lovely riverfront scenery. Divided into Upper and Lower sections, the park offers plenty to explore, from historic homesteads and interpretive exhibits to scenic picnic areas and the impressive Bowman's Hill Tower. Unfortunately, while the park delivers a wonderful outdoor experience, traditional overnight camping isn't part of the equation unless your a Boy Scout or accompanying one of their troops.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spectacular Revolutionary War history at the very site of Washington's legendary Delaware River crossing; (2) Beautifully maintained grounds featuring mature trees, open lawns and scenic riverfront views; (3) Fascinating colonial-era buildings, historic demonstrations and educational exhibits that bring America's founding history to life; (4) Wonderful recreational opportunities, including walking, cycling, fishing, kayaking and picnicking; and (5) Convenient proximity to charming New Hope, the Delaware Canal towpath and Bowman's Hill Tower, offering plenty of opportunities to extend your adventure.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) No conventional public tent or RV camping, with overnight group camping restricted to organized Scout groups by prior arrangement; (2) No dedicated RV campsites, electrical hookups, water connections or dump station; (3) Park grounds generally close at sunset, limiting opportunities to linger into the evening; (4) Some historic buildings and attractions require admission fees or operate on limited schedules; and (5) Periodic restoration projects and special events can restrict access to certain areas, while the historic Washington Crossing Bridge's three-ton weight limit makes it unsuitable for larger RVs.

      Happy Camping!

      Lowe's - W Windsor

Upscale Parking Paradise at This Home Fixer-Upper

Located just off US Route 1 in the upscale Princeton area, this spacious Lowe's serves up a surprisingly pleasant patch of pavement for weary road warriors looking to catch some shut-eye. Set back roughly 80 yards from the highway, this big blue home improvement retailer offers a generously sized parking lot with relatively manageable traffic, good maneuverability and a quieter atmosphere than you might expect from such a busy suburban retail corridor. The western and southern edges of the lot are particularly appealing for an overnight stay, and with Trader Joe's, Starbucks and several other retailers nearby, convenience certainly isn't in short supply. Better yet, the store management was friendly and accommodating when we called ahead to arrange our overnight visit.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spacious, paved parking lot with plenty of room to maneuver larger rigs; (2) Convenient access to US Route 1 and nearby I-95; (3) Western and southern parking areas offer quieter spots away from the busiest customer traffic; (4) Excellent nearby conveniences, including Trader Joe's, Starbucks and several dining options; and (5) Friendly store management that welcomed our overnight stay, plus surprisingly good opportunities for outdoor recreation nearby.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) Some daytime retail traffic and occasional road noise, although nothing terribly disruptive; (2) No RV hookups, dump station or dedicated overnight camping facilities; (3) Parking areas closest to the store can become crowded during business hours; (4) Limited greenery and little of the scenery you'd expect from a traditional campground; and (5) While the overnight experience was excellent, this is still a commercial parking lot rather than a destination for an extended stay.

      Happy Overnighting!

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Round Valley State Park Campground

Peaceful Wilderness Escape for Adventurous Families

There's something wonderfully special about escaping into nature where the only sounds are rustling leaves, birds singing and the gentle movement of water along the shoreline. Nestled among the wooded hills surrounding the beautiful Round Valley Reservoir, this rustic SP campground offers families a chance to disconnect from everyday distractions and enjoy a little wilderness adventure together. Unlike traditional campgrounds, the campsites are accessible only by hiking or boating, so getting anywhere here requires some planning and a willingness to travel light. Once you've arrived, you'll find secluded, wooded campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Amenities are basic, with pit toilets and no showers, but the beautiful reservoir, scenic hiking trails, fishing and kayaking opportunities more than make up for the lack of modern conveniences. Our kids loved exploring the woods, spotting wildlife and gathering around a crackling campfire at night to share stories beneath the stars. For families comfortable with the hike, I'd recommend choosing one of the campsites along the reservoir shoreline for the lovely water views and peaceful surroundings. Just remember that swimming is limited to the park's designated beach area. Round Valley isn't your typical family campground, but for adventurous families who enjoy hiking, camping under the stars and making wonderful memories together, it's a beautiful place to experience nature at its finest!

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

      Beacon Hill Camping

      Great location

We stayed here to go to the Hershey RV show—about 55 min drive. Right in the center of Amish country. Campground is adults only. It was very clean. The bathrooms were very clean with great water pressure. The roads are tight for getting into sites. Site 5 was not level side to side. We met great people there.

    Guide to Springtown

Camping opportunities near Springtown, Pennsylvania span several county and state park systems within a 25-mile radius. The area sits in the gently rolling hills of Bucks County at approximately 500 feet elevation, where weather conditions vary dramatically between seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and winter often dropping below freezing. Winter camping remains possible at select locations, though many campgrounds like Boulder Woods operate on a mid-April to mid-October schedule.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: 3.5 miles of trails lead to prime fishing spots at Fort Washington State Park Campground, where you'll find excellent access to Wissahickon Creek. "Replete with recreational facilities that would put most SPs to shame, Fort Washington is comprised of 492 acres of unbridled, very well-manicured landscapes that offer up great spots for birding, hiking and exploring."

Disc golf courses: free to play at multiple locations including Boulder Woods, where one camper noted: "That's where we fell in love with disc golf. They rent and sell discs." Green Lane Park also features "a phenomenal disc golf course, hiking, and fishing."

Bird watching excursions: hawk viewing platform available at Fort Washington State Park, making it ideal for serious birders. "Should you call yourself a bird watcher, you'll be particularly interested as from this very spot you can view the beautiful raptors that migrate here on a seasonal basis in both the Spring and Autumn."

Creek exploration: no permit needed for wading at Evansburg State Park Campground, which one visitor called "an amazing gem" where "I've spent countless hours hiking and fishing." Another camper mentioned it's "great for creek hiking" with numerous shallow areas perfect for children to explore.

    What campers like

Level tent sites: paved camping pads at French Creek State Park Campground make setup easier. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other. Bathrooms were very nice and clean with large showers."

Privacy between campsites: natural screening from vegetation at many locations. At French Creek, "as long as you don't stay right across from the bath houses you will find ample shade at your site. There are so many trees and brush in between most sites you can't even really see your neighbors."

Year-round availability: winter camping options exist at select locations. One winter camper at French Creek noted, "Stayed over for one night in early December. Showers and bathrooms were great! The honor system of payment at the office makes it really easy to come in late and leave early."

Accessibility to Philadelphia: 25-minute drive from Village Scene Park, which provides a safe base for city exploration. "Located 30 miles or so northwest from 'The City of Brotherly Love,' VSP is a hodge-podge of different living accommodations... There's a SEPTA Doylestown/Landsdale regional rail line stop that will pretty much give you all of the direct access to the city."

    What you should know

Seasonal operations: restricted schedule at many campgrounds. Deep Creek Campground at Green Lane Park only operates from April through October, while spots like French Creek and Village Scene remain accessible year-round.

Reservation requirements: book ahead during peak season (May-September) when sites fill quickly, especially at popular parks. The Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA "does close for winter and reopens in April but call park for exact closure dates because they do change."

Group camping restrictions: some locations limit individual camping. Group Camp — Ridley Creek State Park is mainly for organized groups rather than individual campers. One visitor clarified, "Love Ridley and their trails. However, there is only group tenting here."

Terrain challenges: muddy conditions common at several locations after rain. At Tohickon Family Campground, "Don't come if you're in a tent and it has been or will rain. It becomes flooded or turns into a mud pit."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: multiple play areas at French Creek State Park make it ideal for children. "There is a huge pool that has a beautiful view overlooking the lake. There are trails for mountain biking or hiking, a frisbee golf course, playground at the campground and at the lake."

Kid-friendly activities: scheduled events occur regularly at Boulder Woods Campground. "We had a great time. Enjoyed a nice long weekend out of the city. Clean amenities," and another camper noted it has "lots of activities for kids."

Safety considerations: quiet campgrounds provide peace of mind. "We absolutely love camping at French Creek for several reasons... As long as you don't stay right across from the bath houses you will find ample shade at your site."

Swimming options: pool facilities vary by location. At Boulder Woods, families appreciate the recreational options: "There is a huge pool that has a beautiful view overlooking the lake."

    Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: check length restrictions before booking. At Tohickon Family Campground, "if you have a big rig it can be a little squish," though they do offer "Full hook ups which was great!"

Parking assistance: staff help available at some locations. At Boulder Woods, "The spots are tight to get into but the staff will offer to park your camper using your vehicle. I let them park mine and I'm really glad I did. It was super tight."

Age restrictions: some facilities limit older RVs. One camper at Boulder Woods noted disappointment: "They only allow seasonal campers to be 10 years old or newer. Ours is 13. Very disappointed."

Hookup variations: confirm availability before arrival. Tohickon offers reasonable rates for full hookups, with one camper noting "Price for full hookup campsites are very reasonable. Bottom line if you are looking for a modern campground with tons of amenities for $100 a night this is not the campground for you."
