McDowell Nature Preserve campground offers sites approximately 20 minutes from Charlotte with both tent and RV camping options. Located on Lake Wylie, the 1,132-acre preserve provides camping opportunities with varying degrees of privacy and amenities. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-50°F while summer can reach 85-95°F, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons in this region.
What to do
Fishing access at Ebenezer Park: Visitors can fish directly from the shores of Lake Wylie. "Fun beach within easy walk from campsite!" reports camper Frankie E. about Ebenezer Park Campground.
Hiking trails at different skill levels: Crowders Mountain provides options for all abilities. "The trails are strenuous but views are amazing! Its definitely worth it and right outside town, not far out," notes Tricia B. about the paths at Crowders Mountain State Park Campground.
Historical exploration: The Kings Mountain area offers significant Revolutionary War history. "Tons to do, including hikes and history. Make sure to go across the street to the Kings Mountain Military site. Better yet, plan your stay when they are doing an event," suggests Don H.
What campers like
Urban-adjacent camping: Camp without traveling far from city conveniences. "This campground is just minutes from Charlotte, but secluded from the city noise. Nice open spaces with shade. No views to speak of but several short trails and nice areas around Lake Wylie," shares Nora C. about McDowell Nature Preserve.
Quiet weekday camping: Midweek stays offer more solitude. "Once you pull off the road and back into the nature preserve, all of the noise (except for airplanes) falls away," explains Lee J., who appreciated the peaceful atmosphere.
Newly renovated facilities: Recent updates improve camping comfort. "Great, long words wooded site! Reasonably priced. Gated. Great restrooms and showers," notes David E. about his experience.
What you should know
Limited activities at some parks: Some campgrounds focus primarily on camping rather than recreation. "My husband and I stayed here for a few days at the beginning of October. It's very quiet and peaceful. What I didn't like was they had no activities like most other camp sites," mentions Davis about McDowell.
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven ground at certain campgrounds. "Many camping sites are very much in need of leveling. Sites slope from left to right, front to back, and some slope in both ways," warns Richard E. about Kings Mountain State Park.
Seasonal construction: Check for ongoing improvement projects. "Park itself has considerable construction going on with no water access. However the campground was open and sites are nice and spacious," reports Kevin A. about Ebenezer Park.
Tips for camping with families
Halloween events: Some parks offer seasonal activities for children. "We went around Halloween and they had trick-or-treating around the park as well as prizes for the best decorated," mentions Ashley W. about Ebenezer Park.
Family-friendly amenities: Carowinds Camp Wilderness offers dedicated facilities for children. "Nice friendly staff, free shuttle to the amusement park, great community center, and more. Whether you are hanging in the RV park or at the amusement park, you'll be satisfied," shares Joe G. about Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort.
Security features: Gated campgrounds provide peace of mind for families. "The camp was patrolled regularly by the police and I felt very safe. I can't say enough good things here," reports Ryan B. about his McDowell Nature Preserve experience.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for trailers: Choose sites carefully based on vehicle requirements. "The park is lovely, with lots of trails and nature. Beautiful wooded setting. That said, there aren't many sites for RVs and some are not level - hard to get trailer level even with max leveling blocks," advises Kathy L.
Airport proximity considerations: Some RV parks have air traffic noise. "Clean campground with full hook ups except cable TV. It is near the Charlotte airport, so there is noise from planes taking off and landing between 6 AM and 10 PM. Easy in and out," notes Barry S. about Fieldridge Acres.
RV size limitations: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Belmont have restrictions for larger vehicles. "It is hard to believe that you are in the city limits of Charlotte in this campground. It is very rustic, with lots of trees and nature, and the campsites are nicely spaced out so you're not on top of other units. The campground is not terribly big rig friendly," cautions Rick B.
